Book Synopsis New Perspectives on 2 Enoch by : Andrei Orlov
Download or read book New Perspectives on 2 Enoch written by Andrei Orlov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Perspectives on 2 Enoch: No Longer Slavonic Only presents a collection of papers from the fifth conference of the Enoch Seminar. The conference re-examines 2 Enoch, an early Jewish apocalyptic text previously known to scholars only in its Slavonic translation, in light of recently identified Coptic fragments. This approach helps to advance the understanding of many key issues of this enigmatic and less explored Enochic text. One of the important methodological lessons of the current volume lies in the recognition that the Adamic and Melchizedek traditions, the mediatorial currents which play an important role in the apocalypse, are central for understanding the symbolic universe of the text. The volume also contains the recently identified Coptic fragments of 2 Enoch, introduced to scholars for the first time during the conference.
Download or read book Strange Labour written by Robert Penner and published by Radiant Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange Labour is a powerful meditation on the meaning of humanity in a universe that is indifferent to our extinction, and a provocative re-imagining of many of the tropes and clichés that have shaped the post-apocalyptic novel. Most people have deserted the cities and towns to work themselves to death in the construction of monumental earthworks. The only adults unaffected by this mysterious obsession are a dwindling population that live in the margins of a new society they cannot understand. Isolated, in an increasingly deserted landscape, living off the material remnants of the old order, trapped in antiquated habits and assumptions, they struggle to construct a meaningful life for themselves. Miranda, a young woman who travels across what had once been the West, meets Dave, who has peculiar theories about the apocalypse.

Or have they been taught, coached, rewarded, and reinforced in ways that enable them to be leaders? In The 108 Skills of Natural Born Leaders, you'll learn that no one is born a leader. But everyone has the natural born capacity to lead. We label people "natural born leaders" because they consistently and frequently model qualities that inspire others to commit to their direction. This book identifies the skill set that causes others to see people as natural born leaders, helping you assess your current level of these skills and coaching you to master your weak areas. You will learn: Foundation skills, including self-awareness and the ability to establish rapport. Direction skills, including the ability to set a course and develop others as leaders. Willing follower skills, including the ability to influence others and create a motivating environment.

Book Synopsis Translation in Modern Japan by : Indra Levy
Download or read book Translation in Modern Japan written by Indra Levy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of translation in the formation of modern Japanese identities has become one of the most exciting new fields of inquiry in Japanese studies. This book marks the first attempt to establish the contours of this new field, bringing together seminal works of Japanese scholarship and criticism with cutting-edge English-language scholarship. Collectively, the contributors to this book address two critical questions: 1) how does the conception of modern Japan as a culture of translation affect our understanding of Japanese modernity and its relation to the East/West divide? and 2) how does the example of a distinctly East Asian tradition of translation affect our understanding of translation itself? The chapter engage a wide array of disciplines, perspectives, and topics from politics to culture, the written language to visual culture, scientific discourse to children's literature and the Japanese conception of a national literature.Translation in Modern Japan will be of huge interest to a diverse readership in both Japanese studies and translation studies as well as students and scholars of the theory and practice of Japanese literary translation, traditional and modern Japanese history and culture, and Japanese women‘s studies.

Book Synopsis Imagining Contagion in Early Modern Europe by : Claire L. Carlin
Download or read book Imagining Contagion in Early Modern Europe written by Claire L. Carlin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideological underpinnings of early modern theories of contagion are dissected in this volume by an integrated team of literary scholars, cultural historians, historians of medicine and art historians. Even today, the spread of disease inspires moralizing discourse and the ostracism of groups thought responsible for contagion; the fear of illness and the desire to make sense of it are demonstrated in the current preoccupation with HIV, SARS, 'mad cow' disease, West Nile virus and avian flu, to cite but a few contemporary examples. Imagining Contagion in Early Modern Europe explores the nature of understanding when humanity is faced with threats to its well-being, if not to its very survival.
