It introduces her father, an ordinary guy, who bought a defunct ice hockey team, borrowed a million dollars on his signature in 1934, at 39 years old, to build an ice palace of almost 10,000 seats. He had to pay it all back in the Great Depression of the 1930's. He just happened to mention this at the dinner table to the startled Irish mother of six children. Throughout a 50 year marital adventure, what follows is the magic of show business, the might of small manufacturing and the magnitude of a devoted family and fascinating loyal friends who find themselves 100 years later, still wondering how it all plays out.

Book Synopsis X-Ray Astronomy with the Einstein Satellite by : R. Giacconi
Download or read book X-Ray Astronomy with the Einstein Satellite written by R. Giacconi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meeting of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society, held in Cambridge, Massachusetts on January 28- 30, 1980, marks the coming of age of X-ray astronomy. In the 18 years since the discovery of the first extrasolar X-ray source, Sco X-l, the field has experienced an extremely rapid instrumentation development culminating with the launch on November 13, 1978 of the Einstein Observatory (HEAO-2) which first introduced the use of high resolution imaging telescopes to the study of galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources. The Einstein Observatory instruments can detect sources as faint as 10-7 Sco X-lor about 17 magnitudes fainter. The technological developments in the field have been paralleled by a host of new discoveries: in the early 1960's the detection of 9 "X-ray stars", objects 10 times more luminous in X-rays than the Sun and among the brightest stellar objects at all wavelengths; in the late 1960's and early 1970's the discovery of the nature of such systems which were identified as collapsed stars (neutron stars and black holes) in mass exchange binary systems, and the detection of the first few extragalactic sources.

There is also an entirely new chapter on the Quantum World, which connects the fascinating topics of quantum entanglement and quantum computing. Key Features: Provides a solid, yet accessible, background to basic physics without complex mathematics Uses a human interest approach to show how science is significant for more than its technological consequences Discusses the arts and philosophies of historical periods that are pertinent to the subject
Book Synopsis A Buyer's and User's Guide to Astronomical Telescopes and Binoculars by : James Mullaney
Download or read book A Buyer's and User's Guide to Astronomical Telescopes and Binoculars written by James Mullaney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amateur astronomers of all skill levels are always contemplating their next telescope, and this book points the way to the most suitable instruments. Similarly, those who are buying their first telescopes – and these days not necessarily a low-cost one – will be able to compare and contrast different types and manufacturers. This exciting and revised new guide provides an extensive overview of binoculars and telescopes. It includes detailed up-to-date information on sources, selection and use of virtually every major type, brand, and model on today’s market, a truly invaluable treasure-trove of information and helpful advice for all amateur astronomers. Originally written in 2006, much of the first edition is inevitably now out of date, as equipment advances and manufacturers come and go. This second edition not only updates all the existing sections of “A Buyer’s and User’s Guide to Astronomical Telescopes and Binoculars” but adds two new ones: Astro-imaging and Professional-Amateur collaboration. Thanks to the rapid and amazing developments that have been made in digital cameras – not those specialist cool-chip astronomical cameras, not even DSLRs, but regular general-purpose vacation cameras – it is easily possible to image all sorts of astronomical objects and fields. Technical developments, including the Internet, have also made it possible for amateur astronomers to make a real contribution to science by working with professionals. Selecting the right device for a variety of purposes can be an overwhelming task in a market crowded with observing options, but this comprehensive guide clarifies the process. Anyone planning to purchase binoculars or telescopes for astronomy – whether as a first instrument or as an upgrade to the next level – will find this book a treasure-trove of information and advice. It also supplies the reader with many useful hints and tips on using astronomical telescopes or binoculars to get the best possible results from your purchase.
Download or read book SIRIUS-Ly written by Patrick Rieder and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailey, the sassy AI continued, "Captain Asil, you have been ALIT. ALIT stands for Artificial Learning Implant Technology. You are one of the first humans to be fitted with implants that contain knowledge programs that you will need to command this ship.""Captain of a starship? I barely know my name!" The Earth is in turmoil. A nuclear war has left the atmosphere unstable, and the race is on to find a new home in case this one doesn't make it. 3200 BC; Mali, West Africa; a tribe known as the Dogon record the existence of a second star in the Sirius system. The star Sirius B is not visible to the naked eye. The Dogon tell a tale of extraterrestrial visitation by a race known as the Nommo. The Nommo claim to come from a planet that orbits yet a third star in the Sirius system.Five thousand years later, the existence of Sirius B has been confirmed. In the late twenty-first century, using the moon as a radio telescope, scientists confirm the discovery of the third star--Sirius C and an exoplanet in its "Goldilocks Zone". Asil Silverwood, the quick-thinking and movie-quoting captain of the interstellar ship Alpha, and his crew of scientific geniuses are tasked with an almost impossible mission. Using the most advanced technology of the early twenty-second century, Captain Silverwood will pilot Earth's first interstellar starship to the Sirius system in what may be humankind's last-gasp attempt to save themselves and find a new home for the people of Earth....I opened the hatch and gazed upon this alien world. We had landed on the beach about five hundred meters from the calm water of the bay, and about one kilometer from what we initially thought were tall grasses. The downpour of rain had eased to just falling lightly and persistently....The words of Neil Armstrong and Karique Chang Dubosky entered my mind as they each had been the first to step on the Moon and Mars, respectively. "This is one small step for a human....."...I thought for a moment. I wanted to speak a line that would go down in history, but nothing popped into my head except Hailey's damned old movies, and the fact that this should be Genie's moment, so I said something very Tolkien-ish, "The realm of the human has not ended, for all those who have wandered, are not lost." I stepped firmly onto the sandy beach believing I was the first to ever walk on this planet.
Book Synopsis Origins and Grand Finale by : Gary Haitel
Download or read book Origins and Grand Finale written by Gary Haitel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins and Grand Finale presents an in-depth study of how modern science and astronomy compare to the biblical narrative of the origin of the universe as well as the origin of life. Distinguishing between scientific facts and fairy-tales, as well as biblical facts and poetry, author Gary Haitel attempts to build a perfect harmony between science and theology. In Origins and Grand Finale, Haitel is not proposing new scientific theories. Instead, he merely examines current scientific theories, however bizarre they may seem, and explains how they relate to the biblical narrative. The second part of this guide focuses primarily on biblical end times and the abuse of political authority. In the third part, Haitel reflects upon not only the finale of humanity as described in the Bible, but also the finale of an individuals physical life here on earth and what to expect after the body returns to the dust of the earth. Are we just complex biological accidents, or are we immortal spiritual eternal beings? Written in a straightforward, down-to-earth fashion, Origins and Grand Finale offers a unique opportunity to understand the perfect harmony between science and theology.

Book Synopsis Japanese Mythology and the Primeval World by : Peter Metevelis
Download or read book Japanese Mythology and the Primeval World written by Peter Metevelis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese have faithfully preserved their ancient myths as a connected and well ordered system. And as a system, Japanese myths say much about the human condition in the cosmos and about the human place in the cosmic order. Not until now has a book-length, English-language study been released on Japanese mythology. Drawing on his meticulous research, Asianist Peter Metevelis presents this selection of analytic essays that form a mosaic of themes on the primordial world of Japanese myth, adding a rewarding voice to cultural history and the history of ideas around the world. Metevelis shows that, contrary to popular belief, Japanese myths have much in common with other myths around the globe, and are mythically, logically, and symbolically equivalent. This suggests that Japanese culture has always resonated with the rest of the world and provides a valuable touchstone for comparative mythologists. The mythic themes Metevelis explores include: Linkage of birth with death Loss of immortality Containment of souls Effect of time on mortals Creation of the cosmos And many more This incomparable volume also includes detailed notes, bibliographies, and appendices to help further your knowledge of Japanese myth. Under Metevelis's expert guidance, you can expand your understanding of the Japanese myth system, its structure, and its principal actors, and immerse yourself in the ancient Japanese mysteries of the cosmos.
