Book excerpt: Sirhind, a town located 270 km distance from Delhi in Punjab. A small town nowadays famous for a Gurdwara "Fatehgarh Sahib", once was a strategic center between Delhi and Lahore. It was one of the most flourishing towns of the Mughal empire for more than a century but only till the beginning of the 18th century when two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh were martyred here. This tragic incident put the town on negligence and decay. Once upon a time, the city had around 360 mosques, gardens, tombs, caravan sarais, and wells. Sadly, only about three dozen of these remain today. Sirhind: A Monumental Example of Oblivion is a historical trivia about the town of Sirhind. The book is an account of the brief history of the incidents took place in the town, its historical monuments and architecture with photographs. It is an attempt that can create awareness and activism amongst history and heritage lovers and will help them to visit these lesser-known monuments of Sirhind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much anticipated volume looks at the historical evolution of towns and cities in medieval India from the early thirteenth to the late eighteenth century. The selection is based on the availability of documents. These include the narratives of European travellers in English, French, Italian, Dutch, and German with the exception of Ibn Battuta in mid-fourteenth century and also Middle Bengali literature in case of towns in Bengal. While the coastal towns and cities have been looked at, the interior ones are also described on the basis of the writings of later historians and archaeologists. Care has been taken to explain the rise, growth and the decline of some towns and cities in which the changing courses of rivers had played a crucial role. Attempts have been made to search other factors responsible for such eventualities. The delineation of physical features within the city has been given due emphasis including the different quarters of the city and the manners and customs of the local population with reference to craft production and commercial links. The morphological differences between the cities of eastern and those of the western or northern India have also been described. This is clear from the observations of port towns described here. All these would show that India was one of the most urbanized area in the medieval period before advent of the British.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection attends to the locations of memory along and about the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders and the complex ways in which such memories are both allowed for and erased in the present. The collection is situated at the intersection of narratives connected to memory and commemoration in order to ask how memories have been formed and perpetuated across the imposition of these borders. It explores how national boundaries both silence memories and can be subverted in important ways, through consideration of physical sites and cultural practices on both sides of the India-Pakistan-Bangladesh borders that gesture towards that which has been lost – that is, the cultural whole that was the cultural regions of Punjab and Bengal before Partition, as well as broader cultural "wholes" across South Asia, across religious and linguistic lines – alongside forces that deny such connections. The chapters address issues of heritage and memory through specific case-studies on present-day memorial, museological and commemoration practices, through which sometimes competing memorial landscapes have been constructed, and show how memories of past traumas and histories become inscribed into diverse forms of cultural heritage (the built landscape, literature, film).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth century was an intense period in the history of the Sikhs. Extreme persecution continued unabated for over six decades. The Sikhs were virtually crushed by the mighty Islamic powers–Mughals and Afghans. Their main objective was to extirpate the Sikhs because they were the biggest impediment to their complete domination of Hindustan. A handful of the Sikhs were fighting the battle of their survival. With sheer strength of their arms, resoluteness and indomitable courage, they came out from their hideouts and spread over the entire Punjab. The essence of amazing battle tactics extensively devised and deployed by the Sikh warriors, their sterling courage, unmatched military skill in wielding the weapons, rapid regrouping and military acumen to launch sudden surgical shock attacks is capsuled in this book, which hitherto remained unknown. A rare piece of historical evidence that speaks volumes of the indomitable courage of the Sikhs by their most embittered enemy.
