Book Synopsis A Victorian Marriage by : Anne van Weerden
Download or read book A Victorian Marriage written by Anne van Weerden and published by J. Fransje van Weerden. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805-1865) is generally regarded as having been an unhappily married alcoholic. The aim of this essay is to show that, contrary to this widespread belief, Hamilton had a good marriage, that in fact large parts of his marriage were fairly happy. It is discussed where the idea of his marriage as having been an unhappy one came from, and it is shown that according to current standards he was by no means an alcoholic.

Book Synopsis The Notion of Syllable Across History, Theories and Analysis by : Domenico Russo
Download or read book The Notion of Syllable Across History, Theories and Analysis written by Domenico Russo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any notion linguistically expressed, even one such as the syllable, is always the result of several different viewpoints. In order to take this into account, this book draws inspiration from the scheme of quaternion, as conceived by Sir William Rowan Hamilton and later introduced in theoretical linguistics by Ferdinand de Saussure. The first term of the quaternion (The Dawn of the Syllable) is provided by historical observations. The second term (Beyond the Sound of Syllables) is composed of different descriptive analyses of the syllable carried out in some particular languages and dialects. The third term (The Body of Syllables) presents the analytical-instrumental analysis of the syllable, while the fourth (De Syllaba Ventura) proposes some theoretical considerations.
Book Synopsis Catherine Disney by : Anne van Weerden
Download or read book Catherine Disney written by Anne van Weerden and published by J. Fransje van Weerden. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine Disney (1800-1853) is known as the ‘lost love’ of the Irish mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805-1865), but about herself little is known. Based on what Hamilton wrote about her and scraps of information which were found on various places, extended with conclusions which could be drawn from known events, this is a sketch of how she fell in love with Hamilton in 1824, what the motives may have been for her family to force her to marry the reverend William Barlow (1792-1871), what may have triggered her suicide attempt in 1848 after which she did not live with Barlow any more, and how she spoke with Hamilton shortly before she died. In these two interviews she could finally tell Hamilton that she had also loved him. In the last chapters it is discussed how Catherine’s unhappiness seems to have influenced her eldest son, James Barlow (1826-1913), and through him also her granddaughter Jane Barlow (1856-1917). This sketch is supplementary to the essay A Victorian Marriage : Sir William Rowan Hamilton. But being self-contained, it can also be read on its own.
Download or read book Geometrical Optics written by J. L. Synge and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1937-01-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is by no means easy for the applied mathematician to decide how much importance he should attach to the more abstract and aesthetic side of his work ... To all appearances, Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1850-1865) attached little importance to the practical applications of his method, and it was only with the publication of his Mathematical Papers that it was possible to form a more correct and balanced judgement of Hamilton as an applied mathematician.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have ever wondered what quaternions are — then look no further, John Vince will show you how simple and useful they are. This 2nd edition has been completely revised and includes extra detail on the invention of quaternions, a complete review of the text and equations, all figures are in colour, extra worked examples, an expanded index, and a bibliography arranged for each chapter. Quaternions for Computer Graphics includes chapters on number sets and algebra, imaginary and complex numbers, the complex plane, rotation transforms, and a comprehensive description of quaternions in the context of rotation. The book will appeal to students of computer graphics, computer science and mathematics, as well as programmers, researchers, academics and professional practitioners interested in learning about quaternions. John Vince explains in an easy-to-understand language, with the aid of useful figures, how quaternions emerged, gave birth to modern vector analysis, disappeared, and reemerged to be adopted by the flight simulation industry and computer graphics. This book will give you the confidence to use quaternions within your every-day mathematics, and explore more advanced texts.

Book Synopsis Quaternions and Rotation Sequences by : J. B. Kuipers
Download or read book Quaternions and Rotation Sequences written by J. B. Kuipers and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton introduced quaternions in the nineteenth century--a feat he celebrated by carving the founding equations into a stone bridge--mathematicians and engineers have been fascinated by these mathematical objects. Today, they are used in applications as various as describing the geometry of spacetime, guiding the Space Shuttle, and developing computer applications in virtual reality. In this book, J. B. Kuipers introduces quaternions for scientists and engineers who have not encountered them before and shows how they can be used in a variety of practical situations. The book is primarily an exposition of the quaternion, a 4-tuple, and its primary application in a rotation operator. But Kuipers also presents the more conventional and familiar 3 x 3 (9-element) matrix rotation operator. These parallel presentations allow the reader to judge which approaches are preferable for specific applications. The volume is divided into three main parts. The opening chapters present introductory material and establish the book's terminology and notation. The next part presents the mathematical properties of quaternions, including quaternion algebra and geometry. It includes more advanced special topics in spherical trigonometry, along with an introduction to quaternion calculus and perturbation theory, required in many situations involving dynamics and kinematics. In the final section, Kuipers discusses state-of-the-art applications. He presents a six degree-of-freedom electromagnetic position and orientation transducer and concludes by discussing the computer graphics necessary for the development of applications in virtual reality.

Book Synopsis The Quaternion Dirac Equation by : Dennis Morris
Download or read book The Quaternion Dirac Equation written by Dennis Morris and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the long sought after quaternion form of the Dirac equation. Recent developments in understanding quaternion differentiation by the author of this book have produced a rewrite of the Dirac equation as a quaternion equation. The quaternion Dirac equation predicts parity violation by the weak force and explains how neutrinos can be both massless and oscillate between generations. We also have a significant step towards the unification of general relativity and quantum field theory. This book is a monumental triumph of work by many individuals over almost a century. It will be of interest to students and advanced theorists alike.
