Book excerpt: In the following account of the life and works of Sir WILLIAM HERSCHEL, I have been obliged to depend strictly upon data already in print--the Memoir of his sister, his own scientific writings and the memoirs and diaries of his cotemporaries. The review of his published works will, I trust, be of use. It is based upon a careful study of all his papers in the Philosophical Transactions and elsewhere.
Book Synopsis Discoverers of the Universe by : Michael Hoskin
Download or read book Discoverers of the Universe written by Michael Hoskin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the brother and sister who helped found modern astronomy Discoverers of the Universe tells the gripping story of William Herschel, the brilliant, fiercely ambitious, emotionally complex musician and composer who became court astronomer to Britain's King George III, and of William's sister, Caroline, who assisted him in his observations of the night sky and became an accomplished astronomer in her own right. Together, they transformed our view of the universe from the unchanging, mechanical creation of Newton's clockmaker god to the ever-evolving, incredibly dynamic cosmos that it truly is. William was in his forties when his amateur observations using a homemade telescope led to his discovery of Uranus, and an invitation to King George's court. He coined the term "asteroid," discovered infrared radiation, was the first to realize that our solar system is moving through space, discovered 2,500 nebulae that form the basis of the catalog astronomers use today, and was unrivalled as a telescope builder. Caroline shared William's passion for astronomy, recording his observations during night watches and organizing his papers for publication. She was the first salaried woman astronomer in history, a pioneer who herself discovered nine comets and became a role model for women in the sciences. Written by the world's premier expert on the Herschels, Discoverers of the Universe traces William and Caroline's many extraordinary contributions to astronomy, shedding new light on their productive but complicated relationship, and setting their scientific achievements in the context of their personal struggles, larger-than-life ambitions, bitter disappointments, and astonishing triumphs.

Book Synopsis Sir William Herschel by : Edward S. Holden
Download or read book Sir William Herschel written by Edward S. Holden and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This has never been made public. The only thoroughly authentic sources of information in possession of the world, are a letter written by Herschel himself, in answer to a pressing request for a sketch of his life, and the Memoir and Correspondence of Caroline Herschel (London, 1876), a precious memorial not only of his life, but of one which otherwise would have remained almost unknown, and one, too, which the world could ill afford to lose. The latter, which has been ably edited by Mrs. Mary Cornwallis Herschel,[1] is the only source of knowledge in regard to the early years of the great astronomer, and together with the all too scanty materials to be gained from a diligent search through the biography of the time, affords the data for those personal details of his life, habits, and character, which seem to complete the distinct, though partial conception [Pg 3]of him which the student of his philosophical writings acquires.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir William Herschel: His Life and Works A life of herschel which shall be satis factory in every particular can only-be writ 'ten after a full examination of the materials which are preserved at the family seat in England but as two generations have passed since his death, and as no biography yet exists which approaches to completeness, no apol ogy seems to me to be needed for a conscientious attempt to make the best use of the scanty material which we do possess. This study will, I trust, serve to exhibit so much of his life as belongs to the whole pub lic. His private life belongs to his family, until the time is come to let the world know more of the greatest of practical astronomers and of the inner life of one of its most pro found philosophers, - of a great and ardent mind, whose achievements are and will re main the glory of England. Book Synopsis Starlight and Time by : D. Russell Humphreys
Download or read book Starlight and Time written by D. Russell Humphreys and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 1996-10 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible says the universe is just thousands of years old, and yet we can see stars that are billions of light-years away. Until now, creation scientists have not had a satisfactory answer to this puzzle, but the new cosmology outlined in this book offers a fresh and scientifically sound solution. Though he challenges some traditional creationist theories, Dr. Humphreys takes Scripture very straightforwardly, upholding its inerrancy and the idea of a young universe as he explains days one through four of creation week.

Book Synopsis William Herschel by : Günther Buttmann
Download or read book William Herschel written by Günther Buttmann and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 1961 under the title "Wilhelm Herschel - Leben und Werk". Günther Buttmann has written the first comprehensive German biography of the famous German-born astronomer, who spent most of his life in England. The book also covered the immense astronomical work of William Herschel (1738-1822), assisted by his talented sister Caroline and continued by his son John. In 1781 Herschel famously discovered the planet Uranus, and over decades of observations with large, self-constructed telescopes, he found about 2500 nebulae and star clusters, many double stars and determined the structure of the Milky Way. This important book has now been translated by the German astrophysicist and historian of astronomy Wolfgang Steinicke, with Günther Buttmann's blessings. It is unfortunate though that the original author passed away in Spring 2023 and was unable to see the English edition of his work.
