Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir William Gregory, K. C. M. G: Formerly Member of Parliament and Sometime Governor of Ceylon; An Autobiography The following memoirs were written during the last few years of my husband's life, from 1884 to 1891. They were at first intended only for me and our boy, but he afterwards showed them in part to one or two old and dear friends. He never spoke of their publication, and probably would not have thought them worth bringing before the outer world. I think differently, and my hope in publishing them is that his name, which was known, and kindly known, in many countries beside his own, may be kept alive a little longer, and that for his sake a friendly hand may sometimes in the future be held out to his boy. I have, of course, left out a good deal of what he had written. Some detailed accounts of visits to Tunis and Egypt, when those countries were less in the beaten track than now, are no longer of general interest. In this age of hurry, when there are too many Parliamentary speeches to be read from day to day, it would have been useless to print those of half a century ago. Download or read book Under Empire written by Michael Francis Laffan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2023 New South Wales Premier's History Awards, General History Prize An imam banished from eastern Indonesia to the Cape of Good Hope in 1780 builds a new Muslim community with a mix of fellow exiles, enslaved people, and even the men tasked with supervising his detention. Nineteenth-century colonial chroniclers invent the legend of the “loyal Malay” warrior, whose anger can be tamed through the “mildness” of British rule. A Tunisian-born teacher who arrived in Java from Istanbul in the early twentieth century becomes an enterprising Arabic-language journalist caught between competing nationalisms. Telling these stories and many more, Michael Francis Laffan offers a sweeping exploration of two centuries of interactions among Muslim subjects of empires and future nation-states around the Indian Ocean world. Under Empire traces interlinked lives and journeys, examining engagements with Western, Islamic, and pan-Asian imperial formations to consider the possibilities for Muslims in an imperial age. It ranges from the dying era of the trading companies in the late eighteenth century through the period of Dutch and British colonial rule up to the rise of nationalist and cosmopolitan movements for social reform in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Laffan emphasizes how Indian Ocean Muslims by turns asserted loyalty to colonial states in pursuit of a measure of religious freedom or looked to the Ottoman Empire or Egypt in search of spiritual unity. Bringing the history of Southeast Asian Islam to African and South Asian shores, Under Empire is an expansive and inventive account of Muslim communal belonging on the world stage.

Book Synopsis The Land and the People of Nineteenth-Century Cork by : James S. Donnelly Jr
Download or read book The Land and the People of Nineteenth-Century Cork written by James S. Donnelly Jr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975. Using estate records, local newspapers and parliamentary papers, this book focuses upon two central and interrelated subjects – the rural economy and the land question – from the perspective of Cork, Ireland’s southernmost country. The author examines the chief responses of Cork landlords, tenant farmers and labourers to the enormous difficulties besetting them after 1815. He shows how the great famine of the late 1840s was in many ways an economic and social watershed because it rapidly accelerated certain previous trends and reversed the direction of others. He also rejects the conventional view of the land war of the 1880s, arguing that in Cork it was essentially a ‘revolution of rising expectations’, in which tenant farmers struggled to preserve their substantial material gains since 1850 by using the weapons of ‘agrarian trade unionism’, civil disobedience and unprecedented violence. This title will be of interest to students of rural history and historical geography.
Book Synopsis The Buddha's Tooth by : John S. Strong
Download or read book The Buddha's Tooth written by John S. Strong and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John S. Strong unravels the storm of influences shaping the received narratives of two iconic sacred objects. Bodily relics such as hairs, teeth, fingernails, pieces of bone—supposedly from the Buddha himself—have long served as objects of veneration for many Buddhists. Unsurprisingly, when Western colonial powers subjugated populations in South Asia, they used, manipulated, redefined, and even destroyed these objects to exert control. In The Buddha’s Tooth, John S. Strong examines Western stories, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, surrounding two significant Sri Lankan sacred objects to illuminate and concretize colonial attitudes toward Asian religions. First, he analyzes a tale about the Portuguese capture and public destruction, in the mid-sixteenth century, of a tooth later identified as a relic of the Buddha. Second, he switches gears to look at the nineteenth-century saga of British dealings with another tooth relic of the Buddha—the famous Daḷadā enshrined in a temple in Kandy—from 1815, when it was taken over by English forces, to 1954, when it was visited by Queen Elizabeth II. As Strong reveals, the stories of both the Portuguese tooth and the Kandyan tooth reflect nascent and developing Western understandings of Buddhism, realizations of the cosmopolitan nature of the tooth, and tensions between secular and religious interests.
