Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes an encounter of the author with the Goddess. The author also tells of some of the events that preceded and followed it. In particular, he tells of his changed perception of the world. He could see then, and sometimes can still see, the divinity of women. (They are divine because they are like the Goddess). He knows with a intuitive certainty that the Goddess is about to make her advent once again, and that when that happens, the establishment of a uviversal matriarchy will be the inevitable result. This book is about a goddess of sublime beauty and power, and not about the God of our fathers. It is about the Goddess the human race first knew, the Great Goddess who was worshipped so ardently and for so long by our forebears. Now at long last is returning to walk among her children again. The signs of her coming are manifold, clear as the sun to see for all whose eyes have been opened. Our ancestors knew Her intimately. She was loved and adored by countless millions of people: whole nations worshipped Her; vast empires trembled in fear and joy at the slightest manifestation of Her unspeakable potency and magnificence. Yet few in these darker ages know anything about Her. She is thought to have vanished forever, leaving nothing of Her former cult behind, save a few references scattered in ancient authors, a few statues hidden in museums--mere skeletal remains of her former living glory. Though what I have to report is immemorially ancient, it seems as new to me--as it will to many others in this age--as if it had been newly born. Old does not mean decrepit, and what is truly perennial or immortal cannot wither or fade with time. Ancient and eternal but forever young and fair, the Goddess lives and will never die. "In all, the book possesses great possibilities. It's unique, and possibly the first to recount a personal experience with the Goddess by a man, throughout an entire book. The Goddess experience has been alluded to previously by men but not in a whole book, and not with the slant provided by Alex MacLeod." Book excerpt: Whereas some literary motifs such as the tyrant, the beggar, and the crone have equivalents in the real world, the Loathly Lady is a creature of the imagination. Yet she is not merely a whimsical fantasy. This volume concentrates on the medieval English Loathly Lady tales, which develop the motif as a vehicle for social ideology. One of the primary agendas of this collection is to promote the non-canonical Loathly Ladies as worthwhile subjects for scholarly consideration. The examinations here of the medieval English Loathly Lady tales engage with a myriad of concerns, including anxieties about virginity and sex, power and assimilation, beauty and beastliness. These broad examinations of this enigmatic literary motif are an excellent contribution to the field and will be of great interest to scholars.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. This book charts important changes brought about by teachers in the way literature is read and written about in schools. Rooted in experiences of inner-city schools, it is extremely practical and especially valuable for the multi-ethnic classroom. The writers, all of whom are experienced teachers of English, believe, however, that all schools need to respond to the cultural, racial and linguistic diversity of British society, whether their own populations are homogeneous or mixed. By concentrating on real classrooms, real lessons and real children, the book shows how particular ideas can be put into practice. It approaches theories of reading and of literature through specific examples of lively and successful practice and argues the ease for the centrality of literature and literacy to the curriculum. The book includes lists of resources: books to read with children and books for teachers to read for themselves to deepen their understanding of the ideas and their confidence in adapting them for their own classrooms. Throughout the book continuities are emphasized: between life and literature, between reading and writing, and between learning to read, becoming better at it, and studying literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First in the medieval fantasy series set in Camelot. “This Arthurian adventure is all heart—and humor.”—Publishers Weekly Growing up an orphan in an isolated cottage in the woods, young Terence never expected much adventure. But upon the arrival of Gawain, his life takes a surprising turn. Gawain is destined to become one of the most famous knights of the Round Table. Terence becomes Gawain’s squire and leaves his secluded life for one of adventure in King Arthur’s court. In no time Terence is plunged into the exciting world of kings, wizards, knights, wars, magic spells, dwarfs, damsels in distress, and enchanters. As he adjusts to his new life, he proves to be not only an able squire but also a keen observer of the absurdities around him. His duties take him on a quest with Gawain and on a journey of his own, to solve the mystery of his parentage. Filled with rapier-sharp wit, jousting jocularity, and chuckleheaded knights, this is King Arthur’s court as never before experienced. “The author leaves some tantalizing questions, and the tale is filled with knightly derring-do.”—The Horn Book “Well-drawn characters, excellent, snappy dialogue, detailed descriptions of medieval life, and a dry wit put a new spin on this engaging tale.”—Booklist “If your readers are looking for some notable swashing and buckling with a little chivalrous slapstick thrown in, this retelling of Arthurian legend is the book for you.”—The Bulletin “There are plenty of sword fights and flashes of sorcery to delight readers, while the plot moves at a swift clip.”—Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to traditional stories when they are retold in another time and cultural context and for a different audience? This first-of-its-kind study discusses Bible stories, classical myths, heroic legends, Arthurian romances, Robin Hood lore, folk tales, 'oriental' tales, and other stories derived from European cultures. One chapter is devoted to various retellings of classics, from Shakespeare to "Wind in the Willows." The authors offer a general theory of what motivates the retelling of stories, and how stories express the aspirations of a society. An important function of stories is to introduce children to a cultural heritage, and to transmit a body of shared allusions and experiences that expresses a society's central values and assumptions. However, the cultural heritage may be modified through a pervasive tendency of retellings to produce socially conservative outcomes because of ethnocentric, androcentric and class-based assumptions in the source stories that persist into retellings. Therefore, some stories, such as classical myths, are particularly resistant to feminist reinterpretations, for example, while other types, such as folktales, are more malleable. In examining such possibilities, the book evaluates the processes of interpretation apparent in retellings. Index included.
