Book Synopsis Beyond the Bottom Line by : Jack Quarter
Download or read book Beyond the Bottom Line written by Jack Quarter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarter examines business owners who use their firms as laboratories for social innovation. After providing an introduction to this phenomenon in an historical perspective and discussing the 19th-century British industrialist Robert Owen, he provides ll case studies of contemporary innovators from six countries-the UK, US, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, and New Zealand. The case studies fall into two broad groups. The first involves business people who promote innovative ownership and decision-making strategies such as donating their shares to a trust and thereby creating a company without shareholders so that employees can assume greater control; creating a worker co-operative; and transferring ownership to employees through an employee stock ownership plan. The second group of case studies involves innovative efforts at changing the relationship to the surrounding community through creating socially and environmentally responsible businesses. Quarter concludes by looking at the potential and limitations of this phenomenon for building a social movement. A provocative look at the social organization of work that will be of interest to scholars and researchers of industrial organization and to business leaders examining innovative ownership arrangements.

Book Synopsis St Andrews by : Raymond Lamont-Brown
Download or read book St Andrews written by Raymond Lamont-Brown and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Andrews is without doubt one of Scotland's most historic and beautiful cities. Once the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland, it played a prominent role in the nation's political life until the seventeenth century. In addition, it is also home of the nation's oldest university; and whilst claims that it is the birthplace of golf may remain controversial, there is no doubt it is regarded as world capital of the game today. This fascinating and comprehensive account of St Andrews traces its history from Pictish times to the present day. It is based not only on a huge amount of original research, but also on an intimate knowledge of the town which Raymond Lamont-Brown accumulated in over twenty years' residence there. In addition to facts and figures, the book also introduces many of the people who have featured prominently in the story of St Andrews – from doughty residents such as Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair and Cardinal Archbishop David Beaton to illustrious visitors like Mary, Queen of Scots, John Knox and Samuel Johnson.
Book Synopsis Through the Looking Glass: Byzantium through British Eyes by : Robin Cormack
Download or read book Through the Looking Glass: Byzantium through British Eyes written by Robin Cormack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume derive from the 29th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies. This was held for the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies in the University of London in March 1995, in order to complement the British Museum exhibition 'Byzantium. Treasures of Byzantine Art and Culture'. The objective of the symposium was to explore the ways in which British scholars, travellers, novelists, architects, churchmen and critics came into contact with Byzantium, and how they perceived what they saw. The present volume sets out some of the results of this enquiry. Byzantium is treated both as a source of influence on British culture as well as an 'idea' which British culture constructed in different ways in different periods of history. To give some comparative context, attention is also paid to attitudes towards Byzantium in continental Europe. Papers deal, amongst other topics, with the collecting of objects representative of Byzantine culture and with the changing appreciation of Byzantine manuscripts. They also include a series of case studies of individual historians and Byzantinists, and two deal in particular with Ruskin, who emerges as a perceptive 19th-century critic of Byzantine culture. Through the Looking Glass is volume 7 in the series published by Ashgate/Variorum on behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies.
Book Synopsis Nevile Davidson by : Andrew G. Ralston
Download or read book Nevile Davidson written by Andrew G. Ralston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rev. Dr. A. Nevile Davidson (1899–1976), minister of Glasgow Cathedral for over thirty years, was one of the most distinguished Scottish churchmen of the twentieth century. A living embodiment of the idea of “a broad churchman,” he was both a representative of the high church “Scoto-Catholic” tradition and a key supporter of Billy Graham’s 1955 evangelistic campaign. Throughout most of his life he kept a detailed diary and for the first time, in this book, this rich source of material is drawn upon, in addition to the reminiscences of those who knew him, giving a unique insight into the man behind the dignified public persona. Nevile Davidson: A Life to be Lived not only paints a portrait of a historically significant figure but reveals him to be a man of vision who was constantly thinking of innovative ways to communicate the church’s message to ordinary people and who worked tirelessly for ecumenical cooperation. As such, Nevile Davidson has much to say that is relevant to our own time.
Book Synopsis My Life as a Replica by : Sally Foster
Download or read book My Life as a Replica written by Sally Foster and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970 a concrete replica of the St John’s Cross arrived in Iona sitting incongruously on the deck of a puffer delivering the island’s annual supply of coal. What is the story behind this intriguing replica? How does it relate to the world’s first ringed ‘Celtic cross’, an artistic and technical masterpiece, which has been at the heart of the Iona experience since the eighth century? What does it tell us about the authenticity and value of replicas? In this fascinating book, Foster and Jones draw on extensive interdisciplinary research to reveal the composite biography of the St John’s Cross, its concrete replica, and its many other scale copies. They show that replicas can acquire rich forms of authenticity and value, informed by social relations, craft practices, creativity, place and materiality. Thus, the book challenges traditional precepts that seek authenticity in qualities intrinsic to original historic objects. Replicas are shown to be important objects in their own right, with their own creative, human histories — biographies that people can connect with. The story of the St John’s Cross celebrates how replicas can ‘work’ for us if we let them, particularly if clues are available about their makers’ passion, creativity and craft.
