Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Physical Science by : Sir Arthur Eddington
Download or read book The Philosophy of Physical Science written by Sir Arthur Eddington and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that there is no "philosophy of science", but only the philosophies of certain scientists. But in so far as we recognize an authoritative body of opinion which decides what is and what is not accepted as present-day physics, there is an ascertainable present-day philosophy of physical science. It is the philosophy to which those who follow the accepted practice of science stand committed by their practice. This book contains the substance of the course of lectures which the author Eddington delivered as Tarner Lecturer of Trinity College Cambridge in the Easter Term 1938. The lectures have afforded him an opportunity of developing more fully than in his earlier books the principles of philosophic thought associated with the modern advances of physical science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an account of various experiments, that demonstrate a simplified reality where space and time are relegated to their proper source – the observer. The principles of these experiments and theories originate from the ideas of Einstein, and this text aims to present this 'new' outlook without the need for extensive knowledge of mathematics, physics, or philosophy. This text will be of considerable use to those with a keen interest in physics, and would make for a great addition to any bookshelf. The chapters of this book include: 'The Fitzgerald Contraction', 'Relativity', 'The World of Four Dimensions', 'Fields of Force', 'Kinds of Space', 'The New Law of Gravitation and the Old Law', 'Weighing Light', 'Other Tests of The Theory', 'Momentum and Energy', etcetera. Book Synopsis Physics of the Universe by : Mendel Sachs
Download or read book Physics of the Universe written by Mendel Sachs and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new approach to the subject of cosmology. It fully exploits Einstein?s theory of general relativity. It is found that the most general formal expression of the theory replaces the (10-component) tensor formalism with a (16-component) quaternion formalism. This leads to a unified field theory, where one field incorporates gravitation and electromagnetism. The theory predicts an oscillating universe cosmology with a spiral configuration. Dark matter is explained in terms of a sea of particle?antiparticle pairs, each in a particular (derived) ground state. This leads to an explanation for the separation between matter and antimatter in the universe. There is a brief discussion of black holes and pulsars. The final chapter delves into philosophical considerations such as the different types of ?truth?, positivism versus realism and a discussion of the role of the Mach principle in physics and cosmology.
Book Synopsis Proving Einstein Right by : S. James Gates Jr.
Download or read book Proving Einstein Right written by S. James Gates Jr. and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling adventure story chronicling the perilous journey of the scientists who set out to prove the theory of relativity--the results of which catapulted Albert Einstein to fame and forever changed our understanding of the universe. In 1911, a relatively unknown physicist named Albert Einstein published his preliminary theory of gravity. But it hadn't been tested. To do that, he needed a photograph of starlight as it passed the sun during a total solar eclipse. So began a nearly decade-long quest by seven determined astronomers from observatories in four countries, who traveled the world during five eclipses to capture the elusive sight. Over the years, they faced thunderstorms, the ravages of a world war, lost equipment, and local superstitions. Finally, in May of 1919, British expeditions to northern Brazil and the island of Príncipe managed to photograph the stars, confirming Einstein's theory. At its heart, this is a story of frustration, faith, and ultimate victory--and of the scientists whose efforts helped build the framework for the big bang theory, catapulted Einstein to international fame, and shook the foundation of physics.
Book Synopsis Practical Mystic by : Matthew Stanley
Download or read book Practical Mystic written by Matthew Stanley and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and religion have long been thought incompatible. But nowhere has this apparent contradiction been more fully resolved than in the figure of A. S. Eddington (1882-1944), a pioneer in astrophysics, relativity, and the popularization of science, and a devout Quaker. Practical Mystic uses the figure of Eddington to shows how religious and scientific values can interact and overlap without compromising the integrity of either. Eddington was a world-class scientist who not only maintained his religious belief throughout his scientific career but also defended the interrelation of science and religion while drawing inspiration from both for his practices. For instance, at a time when a strict adherence to deductive principles of physics had proved fruitless for understanding the nature of stars, insights from Quaker mysticism led Eddington to argue that an outlook less concerned with certainty and more concerned with further exploration was necessary to overcome the obstacles of incomplete and uncertain knowledge. By examining this intersection between liberal religion and astrophysics, Practical Mystic questions many common assumptions about the relationship between science and spirituality. Matthew Stanley's analysis of Eddington's personal convictions also reveals much about the practice, production, and dissemination of scientific knowledge at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Download or read book Science and the Unseen World written by Arthur Stanley Eddington and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicist and astronomer Arthur Eddington tested Einstein's Theory of Relativity at an eclipse in 1919. A lifelong Quaker, his 1929 Swarthmore Lecture explores how science and religion define and look at reality. ‘You will understand the true spirit neither of science nor of religion unless seeking is placed in the forefront.’ ‘He puts a strong line against simplistic reductionism in relation to our minds . He emphasizes that when we ask the question, “What are we to think of it all? What is it all about?,” the answer must embrace but not be limited to the scientific answer. His lecture explores this in a delightful way, that remains fully relevant today.’ — Prof. George Ellis 'The attitude of the scientist, here so admirably explained, is the attitude, also, of the mystic. Experience, to both, is what matters most.”’- The Sufi Quarterly, 1929.
