Book excerpt: Marcus Heavy is the founder of the Heavy Sinners Motorcycle Club. They specialize in the drug game, prostitution, blackmail, and murder. You cross any member of the club, and that’s the end of your life. Marcus’ son, Darius, was supposed to take up the mantle as leader of the club, but Darius doesn’t want that life. He’s seen the devastation it brings to his family and everyone around them. So, Darius gets a college degree and a good job and claws his way out of the hood. The life he’s chosen couldn’t be more different than that of his homicidal father’s—until unknown enemies show up at his door, shoot Darius in the head, and kidnap his child. He wakes up in the hospital to find his father hovering over him, wanting to know what Darius plans to do for revenge. No one attacks the Heavy name and lives to tell the story. Darius resists, but as weeks go by and officials focus more on smearing Darius than they do on searching for his child, he feels desperate. With his back to the wall and no official help in sight, Darius turns to the group he once rejected. Marcus always knew his son would come back to the Heavy Sinners MC. He hands over the VP patch to Darius, who suddenly has a seat at the table in the organization he never wanted to be a part of. Desperate to find his child, he tears through the city, going after anyone who might have had a hand in the attack on his family. He never imagined himself as a violent person, yet soon Darius discovers that not only is he capable of it, but he’s good at it. When Dharia enters his orbit, she puts a spark to the desire in him that had burned out months ago, igniting a fire of passion. Will he be able to return to his true self, or is the legacy of the Heavy Sinners MC too strong to resist?

Book excerpt: As a national network of roads and hostels spread across Canada, so did the practice of hitchhiking. Thumbing a Ride examines its rise and fall in the 1970s, drawing on records from the time. Many equated adventure travel with freedom and independence, but a counter-narrative emerged of girls gone missing and other dangers. Town councillors, community groups, and motorists demanded a clampdown on a transient youth movement they believed was spreading anti-establishment nomadism. Linda Mahood asks new questions about hitchhiking as a rite of passage, and about adult intervention that turned a subculture into a pressing moral and social issue.

I’m a Sinner—loyal to the brotherhood. Past relationships taught me that women are tornados of destruction. Love is a cyclone of obligations—a graveyard for useless, unwanted emotions. That is until a tiny timid blue-eyed blonde with a mysterious past blew into my life—Cookie. One kiss landed me in the eye of the storm. I recognize the signs of someone being hunted. I’m usually the hunter—the one who makes their prey quake and keep within the shadows. She is hiding from someone. Who? She is using the Sinners as a shield. Why? I’m determined to unravel her secrets, protect her, and make her mine. Cookie I’m not the kind of girl who dreams of handsome husbands, houses with white picket fences, and babies. I live with the atrocities done to me. I guard my deepest darkest secrets…I survive on my own. That is until High. He’s a dangerous, cut, lean, beautiful, bossy biker who pierced my heart with his sharp jagged edges. Now I am faced with giving him all my ugly and taking a chance on us. He needs to know evil lurks in the shadows, ready to swallow me whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the few full-length regional studies of popular religion in late imperial China, this book presents the history of the cult of Marshal Wen, a plague-fighting deity whose cult flourished through Chekiang and its neighboring provinces. The author provides a lively account of the rise of Wen's cult during the tumultuous years of the Southern Sung dynasty, as well as its spread during subsequent dynasties. In exploring the roles played by scholar-officials, merchants, and Taoist priests in the growth of Wen's cult, the author pays special attention to the various representations of this deity held by different social groups, and shows that these were constantly interacting in a process he calls "reverberation." His analysis of plague expulsion festivals featuring Marshal Wen reveals that they functioned as rites of affliction designed to both achieve communal purification and resolve social crises. This book draws on a wide variety of sources, including Taoist scriptures and liturgical texts, stele inscriptions, literati writings (including poetry), manuscripts from local archives, as well as popular novels and folktales. The author also supplements his historical research with data gathered during fieldwork in Chekiang and Taiwan

Book excerpt: Tom Billodeaux, adopted son of a legendary Sinners quarterback, is making his mark as an outstanding kicker. When an opening occurs for a new punter, he is asked his opinion on the skills of Hall-of-Famer Andy Mortenson's grandchild, Alix Lindstrom. Not only is Alix a superb punter, she is also undeniably a tall, strong woman. For Tom, it's love the first time she removes her helmet, shakes out her blonde hair and gazes at him with her fjord-blue eyes. Alix regards herself as an overly big, clunky female jock who must prove her ability to every man on the team. For years, she has adored Tom from afar. Unfortunately, she isn’t very good at flirting or making her desires known. As Tom helps her integrate with the Sinners, her feelings grow. When Alix proves to be his equal in talent and gets roughed in a few plays, his mentoring and over-protectiveness prove his thoughts are in line with hers. But she doesn't want to be coddled. Can she establish her own identity between the goal posts while scoring touchdowns with him in private?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine women’s contributions to film—in front of the camera and behind it! An Encyclopedic Dictionary of Women in Early American Films: 1895-1930 is an A-to-Z reference guide (illustrated with over 150 hard-to-find photographs!) that dispels the myth that men dominated the film industry during its formative years. Denise Lowe, author of Women and American Television: An Encyclopedia, presents a rich collection that profiles many of the women who were crucial to the development of cinema as an industry—and as an art form. Whether working behind the scenes as producers or publicists, behind the cameras as writers, directors, or editors, or in front of the lens as flappers, vamps, or serial queens, hundreds of women made profound and lasting contributions to the evolution of the motion picture production. An Encyclopedic Dictionary of Women in Early American Films: 1895-1930 gives you immediate access to the histories of many of the women who pioneered the early days of cinema—on screen and off. The book chronicles the well-known figures of the era, such as Alice Guy, Mary Pickford, and Francis Marion but gives equal billing to those who worked in anonymity as the industry moved from the silent era into the age of sound. Their individual stories of professional success and failure, artistic struggle and strife, and personal triumph and tragedy fill in the plot points missing from the complete saga of Hollywood’s beginnings. Pioneers of the motion picture business found in An Encyclopedic Dictionary of Women in Early American Films include: Dorothy Arnzer, the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America and the only female director to make a successful transition from silent films to sound Jane Murfin, playwright and screenwriter who became supervisor of motion pictures at RKO Studios Gene Gauntier, the actress and scenarist whose adaptation of Ben Hur for the Kalem Film Company led to a landmark copyright infringement case Theda Bara, whose on-screen popularity virtually built Fox Studios before typecasting and overexposure destroyed her career Madame Sul-Te-Wan, née Nellie Conley, the first African-American actor or actress to sign a film contract and be a featured performer Dorothy Davenport, who parlayed the publicity surrounding her actor-husband’s drug-related death into a career as a producer of social reform melodramas Lois Weber, a street-corner evangelist who became one of the best-known and highest-paid directors in Hollywood Lina Basquette, the “Screen Tragedy Girl” who married and divorced studio mogul Sam Warner, led The Hollywood Aristocrats Orchestra, claimed to have been a spy for the American Office of Strategic Services during World War II, and became a renowned dog expert in her later years and many more! An Encyclopedic Dictionary of Women in Early American Films: 1895-1930 also includes comprehensive appendices of the WAMPAS Baby Stars, the silent stars remembered in the Graumann Chinese Theater Forecourt of the Stars and those immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Stars. The book is invaluable as a resource for researchers, librarians, academics working in film, popular culture, and women’s history, and to anyone interested either professionally or casually in the early days of Hollywood and the motion picture industry.

Book excerpt: In a spirit of sanctified humor, this satire skewers the error of the easy-believe gospel and defends the biblical truth that Christians will be changed by the Holy Spirit that indwells and empowers them. Take a rough-n-tumble journey with Peregrinus (Latin for pilgrim) as he, with the help of his mentor Plowman, battles with the errors thrown at him by the likes of such characters as Willy "Rush" Forward, Strawberry Nostrum, Reverend Quacksalver, and Jumping Jack Hallelujah.
