Book excerpt: Daniels’ Orchestral Music is the gold standard for all orchestral professionals—from conductors, librarians, programmers, students, administrators, and publishers, to even instructors—seeking to research and plan an orchestral program, whether for a single concert or a full season. This sixth edition, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the original edition, has the largest increase in entries for a new edition of Orchestral Music: 65% more works (roughly 14,050 total) and 85% more composers (2,202 total) compared to the fifth edition. Composition details are gleaned from personal inspection of scores by orchestral conductors, making it a reliable one-stop resource for repertoire. Users will find all the familiar and useful features of the fifth edition as well as significant updates and corrections. Works are organized alphabetically by composer and title, containing information on duration, instrumentation, date of composition, publication, movements, and special accommodations if any. Individual appendices make it easy to browse works with chorus, solo voices, or solo instruments. Other appendices list orchestral works by instrumentation and duration, as well as works intended for youth concerts. Also included are significant anniversaries of composers, composer groups for thematic programming, a title index, an introduction to Nieweg charts, essential bibliography, internet sources, institutions and organizations, and a directory of publishers necessary for the orchestra professional. This trusted work used around the globe is a must-have for orchestral professionals, whether conductors or orchestra librarians, administrators involved in artistic planning, music students considering orchestral conducting, authors of program notes, publishers and music dealers, and instructors of conducting.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symphonic and Chamber Music Bank of the Ph.D. Program in Music at the Graduate School of the City University of New York is an archive of 18th and 19th century reproductions assembled with a special purpose. Pertinent parts and scores have been culled from libraries and collections world-wide, bringing a lesser-known notated music to a central location for further intensive study. The archive, which has been expanding steadily since 1974, was conceived by Professor Barry Brook, the first Executive Officer of the CUNY Music Department. It is our intent to present the compositional sources - the compositions heard in the classical salons, courts, and concert halls - which did not necessarily make their way into the current repertoire. Excluded are the bulk of the works of the masters - Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven - which have already been catalogued extensively, and are constantly being updated. Included are any compositions from the early 1700s through the1830s which have survived. These building blocks of yesteryear are the foundation for a penetrating rediscovery and assessment of music in the Classic Era.

Book Synopsis Musical Meaning and Expression by : Stephen Davies
Download or read book Musical Meaning and Expression written by Stephen Davies and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We talk not only of enjoying music, but of understanding it. Music is often taken to have expressive import--and in that sense to have meaning. But what does music mean, and how does it mean? Stephen Davies addresses these questions in this sophisticated and knowledgeable overview of current theories in the philosophy of music. Reviewing and criticizing the aesthetic positions of recent years, he offers a spirited explanation of his own position. Davies considers and rejects in turn the positions that music describes (like language), or depicts (like pictures), or symbolizes (in a distinctive fashion) emotions. Similarly, he resists the idea that music's expressiveness is to be explained solely as the composer's self-expression, or in terms of its power to evoke a response from the audience. Music's ability to describe emotions, he believes, is located within the music itself; it presents the aural appearance of what he calls emotion characteristics. The expressive power of music awakens emotions in the listener, and music is valued for this power although the responses are sometimes ones of sadness. Davies shows that appreciation and understanding may require more than recognition of and reaction to music's expressive character, but need not depend on formal musicological training.

Book Synopsis Themes in the Philosophy of Music by : Stephen Davies
Download or read book Themes in the Philosophy of Music written by Stephen Davies and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2003-01-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing Stephen Davies's best shorter writings, these essays outline developments within the philosophy of music over the last two decades, and summarize the state of play at the beginning of a new century. Including two new and previously unpublished pieces, they address both perennial questions and contemporary controversies, such as that over the 'authentic performance' movement, and the impact of modern technology on the presentation and reception of musical works. Rather than attempting to reduce musical works to a single type, Davies recognizes a great variety of kinds, and a complementary range of possibilities for their rendition. Among the questions that Davies considers are these: How can expressiveness be in a musical work when music experiences nothing? Is music a language of the emotions? How do recorded pop songs and purely electronic pieces differ from works created for live performance? Is John Cage's silent piece, 4'33", music? To what extent is the performer free to create her own interpretation and to what extent is she constrained by the composer's score? Is training in musical technicalities a prerequisite for a full appreciation of musical works and performances? Is an awareness of the socio-historical setting in which a work is created relevant to its appreciation? How does the value of individual musical works go beyond the worth of an interest in music in general? Stimulating and insightful both as individual discussions and as a coherent argument, these essays will be greatly enjoyed by philosophers, aestheticians, art theorists, and musicologists.
