Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period covered by this book was one of radical change for the U.S. Navy. When the modern navy first considered buying a submarine in 1887, it was a coast defense force confined to the Western Hemisphere. The United States became a world power just as its new submarines offered a way of defending its most distant possession, the Philippines, without tying down an expensive fleet. World War I found U.S. submarines in an unexpected role, countering German U-boats in British waters. Then the situation changed again with unexpected speed.

With her was her daughter, Mrs. Anna Roosevelt Boettiger, her husband, Colonel John Boettiger, and Stephan Early. Truman knew at a glance that his premonition had been true. Mrs. Roosevelt came forward directly and put her arm on his shoulder. 'Harry, the President is dead.'" Robert J. Donovan's Conflict and Crisis presents a detailed account of Harry S. Truman's presidency from 1945-1948.

Book excerpt: Family history and genealogy of Roy Lothrop Shurtleff (1887-1985), son of Samuel Matthew Shurtleff born in Hatley, Quebec, Canada, and his wife, Charlotte Louise Aseneth Avery born in Brecksville, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. He was born in Nevada City, California. He married 1913 in Berkeley, California, Hazle Clifton Lawton (1890-1948), daughter of Frank Houghteling Lawton born in Clyde, Wayne Co., N.Y. and his wife, Francis Marion "Fannie" Rogers born in San Francisco, Calif. She was born in Berkeley, California. The earliest Shurtleff to arrive in America was William Shirtlef (1624-1666). He was born probably in England, perhaps in the parish of Ecclesfield. He was one of the first settlers of Plymouth, Mass. There he married in 1655 Elizabeth Lettice (b. 1636) born in England, a daughter of Thomas and Ann Lettice. William and Elizabeth had three sons, all born in Massachusetts. The Lawton immigrant ancestor of this family was, Thomas Lawton (1614-ca. 1681) of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of George Lawton and Isabell Smith [Elva Lawton]. He came to America with his brother, George, ca. 1637. He married (1) 1635 at Cranfield Elizabeth Salsburie; (2) Mrs. Grace (Parsons) Bailey. He died at Portsmouth, R.I.

Book excerpt: War is often characterised as one percent terror, 99 per cent boredom. Whilst much ink has been spilt on the one per cent, relatively little work has been directed toward the other 99 per cent of a soldier's time. As such, this book will be welcomed by those seeking a fuller understanding of what makes soldiers endure war, and how they cope with prolonged periods of inaction. It explores the issue of military boredom and investigates how soldiers spent their time when not engaged in battle, work or training through a study of their creative, imaginative and intellectual lives. It examines the efforts of military authorities to provide solutions to military boredom (and the problem of discipline and morale) through the provisioning of entertainment and education, but more importantly explores the ways in which soldiers responded to such efforts, arguing that soldiers used entertainment and education in ways that suited them. The focus in the book is on Australians and their experiences, primarily during the First World War, but with subsequent chapters taking the story through the Second World War to the Vietnam War. This focus on a single national group allows questions to be raised about what might (or might not) be exceptional about the experiences of a particular national group, and the ways national identity can shape an individual's relationship and engagement with education and entertainment. It can also suggest the continuities and changes in these experiences through the course of three wars. The story of Australians at war illuminates a much broader story of the experience of war and people's responses to war in the twentieth century.
