Download or read book Intermediate Medical Spanish written by Diana Galarreta-Aima and published by BrownWalker Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an intermediate/advanced level textbook directed toward students who are interested in learning the necessary medical terminology and cultural sensitivity to successfully care for the U.S. Spanish-speaking community in medical contexts. This textbook is divided into 13 chapters that include medical vocabulary, dialogues between medical professionals and patients, case studies, readings on health issues that affect the Latino community, readings to deepen students’ cultural competence while working with Latino patients, and interactive and realistic activities to provide students the tools they need to effectively care for this population. This textbook is unique in the market in its cultural perspective focused on the diversity and complexity of the Latino community living in the United States. The book addresses particular health concerns that affect the Hispanic population such as specific illnesses (diabetes type 2, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, HIV/AIDS, obesity, and liver disease) as well as barriers to accessing healthcare and, at the same time, the book highlights the complexity and diversity among this population. Most medical Spanish textbooks on the market only offer lists of words and common phrases to provide basic tools of communication to healthcare workers. Intermediate Medical Spanish: A Healthcare Workers' Guide for Communicating With the Latino Patient, by contrast, is directed to learners with intermediate and advanced levels of Spanish who wish to broaden their use of the target language in medical contexts. Some of the topics covered in the textbook are: children’s health, maternal and reproductive health, diet and nutrition, mental health, and physical therapy. The book includes hundreds of vocabulary exercises and critical thinking activities pertaining to cultural awareness. The book also includes a key for some of the vocabulary exercises, a Spanish-English glossary, and a list of common medical procedures
Book Synopsis Transformative Translanguaging Espacios by : Maite T. Sánchez
Download or read book Transformative Translanguaging Espacios written by Maite T. Sánchez and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the understanding of the transformative power of incorporating translanguaging, the dynamic language practices of bi/multilingual communities, in the schooling of US Latinx children and youth. It showcases instructional spaces in US education where Latinx children’s and youths’ translanguaging is at the center of their teaching and learning. By centering racialized Latinx bilingual students, including their knowledge systems and cultural and linguistic practices, it transforms the monolingual-white supremacy ideology of many educational spaces. In so doing, racialized bilingual Latinx subjectivities are potentially transformed, as students learn to understand processes of colonization and domination that have robbed them of opportunities to use their entire semiotic repertoire in learning. The book makes a strong theoretical contribution to the field, putting decolonial, post-structuralist understandings of language and bilingualism alongside critical race theory and critical pedagogy.

This book was released on 2024-05-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where gender-based violence remains an alarming global issue, with statistics revealing high rates of physical and sexual violence against women, the need for effective intervention is paramount. Grounded in the multifaceted approach advocated by international expert groups, Comprehensive Sexuality Education for Gender-Based Violence Prevention strives to illuminate the vital relationship between comprehensive sexuality education and the prevention of gender-based violence among young people. This book delves into the critical aspects outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing the urgent call for expansive, multi-sectoral interventions. Drawing from a wealth of scientific literature, it emphasizes the importance of moving beyond the biological aspects of sexuality education to encompass emotional, social, and cultural elements. Through a multidisciplinary lens, this book explores how comprehensive sexuality education can serve as a powerful tool to combat gender-based violence, offering young people an understanding of sexuality, gender dynamics, and healthy relationships. The chapters examine the integration of inclusive curricula in schools, the pivotal role of families in sexuality education, and collaborative efforts between activists, schools, and education stakeholders. This comprehensive resource caters to a diverse audience, making it an indispensable tool for researchers seeking knowledge and inspiration for further inquiry, teachers enriching their educational programs, and health professionals to understand the intersection of education, sexuality, and violence.

Over the past several years, Dr. Becky Kennedy—known to her followers as “Dr. Becky”—has been sparking a parenting revolution. Millions of parents, tired of following advice that either doesn’t work or simply doesn’t feel good, have embraced Dr. Becky’s empowering and effective approach, a model that prioritizes connecting with our kids over correcting them. Parents have long been sold a model of childrearing that simply doesn’t work. From reward charts to time outs, many popular parenting approaches are based on shaping behavior, not raising humans. These techniques don’t build the skills kids need for life, or account for their complex emotional needs. Add to that parents’ complicated relationships with their own upbringings, and it’s easy to see why so many caretakers feel lost, burned out, and worried they’re failing their kids. In Good Inside, Dr. Becky shares her parenting philosophy, complete with actionable strategies, that will help parents move from uncertainty and self-blame to confidence and sturdy leadership. Offering perspective-shifting parenting principles and troubleshooting for specific scenarios—including sibling rivalry, separation anxiety, tantrums, and more—Good Inside is a comprehensive resource for a generation of parents looking for a new way to raise their kids while still setting them up for a lifetime of self-regulation, confidence, and resilience.

Book Synopsis Argentina: Legend and History by : Vicente Blasco Ibáñez
Download or read book Argentina: Legend and History written by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÊIf we wish to understand Argentina, we must begin first of all by familiarizing ourselves with one pivotal sentiment that has permeated and controlled every aspect of Argentine life and development since colonial days. This sentiment is an exalted and haughty patriotism, so intense, indeed, that the tone with which an Argentine says ÒSoy argentinoÓ, is no whit less assertive and proud than that in which citizens of ancient Rome were wont to say ÒCivis Romanus sumÓ. Whatever the origin of this sentiment, the evidences of it are irrefutable. Argentina has to-day about nine million inhabitants: of these, fully two thirds are of recent foreign origin, mainly Italian and Spanish, and to a much smaller extent, English, French, and German. Argentina, in other words, has relatively a much larger population of recent foreign extraction than the United States. Nevertheless, the hyphen does not exist in Argentina; and the terms Italo-Argentine, Hispano-Argentine, Franco-Argentine, etc., are entirely unknown. The jealous and uncompromising patriotism of the Argentine makes hyphenated national designations impossible. If we turn from the evidence of purely popular sentiment to the more sober and more controlled evidence of literature, we find the same thing. Take away from the literature of Argentina the theme of patriotism, and you have taken away its most distinctive and its greatest life-giving element. It has been said, and justly, that the Italian literature of the nineteenth century centered entirely about the theme of Italian unification, voicing during the first half of the century the aspirations of her great men for a united Italy, and during the second half intoning the p¾an of joy at the accomplishment of those aspirations. The same may be said of Argentine literature. The names of the great leaders of her immortal Revolution, both against the mother country and later against the internal caudillo tyrantsÑthe most important of whom was RosasÑand the deeds that they performed, recur again and again through the pages of her men of letters, whatever be the form of literature they engage in, narrative, dramatic, or poetic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2006 Thomas J. Lyon Book Award in Western American Literary Studies, presented by the Western Literature Association In The Emergence of Mexican America, John-Michael Rivera examines the cultural, political, and legal representations of Mexican Americans and the development of US capitalism and nationhood. Beginning with the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 and continuing through the period of mass repatriation of US Mexican laborers in 1939, Rivera examines both Mexican-American and Anglo-American cultural production in order to tease out the complexities of the so-called “Mexican question.” Using historical and archival materials, Rivera's wide-ranging objects of inquiry include fiction, non-fiction, essays, treaties, legal materials, political speeches, magazines, articles, cartoons, and advertisements created by both Mexicans and Anglo Americans. Engaging and methodologically venturesome, Rivera's study is a crucial contribution to Chicano/Latino Studies and fields of cultural studies, history, government, anthropology, and literary studies.
