Book excerpt: Abstract: "Strategies are presented for performing maximum heat integration of process streams simultaneously with flowsheet optimization in sequential process simulators. The strategies have been implemented on FLOWTRAN, using infeasible path optimization methods. Two formulations for performing the heat integration are compared in terms of reliability and computational efficiency. Results on complex process flowsheets show that this approach can produce substantial savings in raw material consumption through more efficient energy integration. Moreover, based on a simplified model, it is proved that these savings can always be achieved in recycle processes."

The chemical industry is currently entering a new phase of rapid evolution. The availability of low-cost feedstocks from natural gas is causing renewed investment in basic chemicals in the OECD, while societal pressures for sustainability and energy security continue to be key drivers in technology development and product selection. This dynamic environment creates opportunities to launch new products and processes and to demonstrate new methodologies for innovation, synthesis and design. FOCAPD-2014 fosters constructive interaction among thought leaders from academia, industry, and government and provides a showcase for the latest research in product and process design. Focuses exclusively on the fundamentals and applications of computer-aided design for the process industries. Provides a fully archival and indexed record of the FOCAPD14 conference Aligns the FOCAPD series with the ESCAPE and PSE series

This book was released on 1987 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The application of recently developed process optimization strategies is motivated and reviewed from a Newton perspective. Over the past fifteen years Newton-type methods have been used to solve difficult simulation problems. Similar principles and advantages also extend to process optimization. Using the Newton framework we discuss recent improvements to nonlinear programming algorithms and the application to large-scale systems. The improvements in the optimization strategy also lead us to consider new and more difficult process problems. Recent results relating to three of these: simultaneous optimization and heat integration, optimization of processes with differential equation models, sensitivity of optimal flowsheets will be reviewed. Finally future directions will be discussed that address the solution of larger and more difficult optimization problems."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theoretical analysis of the modern methods used for modeling various chemical engineering processes. Currently, the two primary problems in the chemical industry are the optimal design of new devices and the optimal control of active processes. Both of these problems are often solved by developing new methods of modeling. These methods for modeling specific processes may be different, but in all cases, they bring the mathematical description closer to the real processes by using appropriate experimental data. In this book, the authors detail a new approach for the modeling of chemical processes in column apparatuses. Further, they describe the types of neural networks that have been shown to be effective in solving important chemical engineering problems. Readers are also presented with mathematical models of integrated bioethanol supply chains (IBSC) that achieve improved economic and environmental sustainability. The integration of energy and mass processes is one of the most powerful tools for creating sustainable and energy efficient production systems. This book defines the main approaches for the thermal integration of periodic processes, direct and indirect, and the recent integration of small-scale solar thermal dryers with phase change materials as energy accumulators. An exciting overview of new approaches for the modeling of chemical engineering processes, this book serves as a guide for the important innovations being made in theoretical chemical engineering.
