Book excerpt: Simultaneous Management blends classic project management theory with the experiences of successful practitioners in our real world. This revolutionary but highly practical book provides today's project managers with the tools and the confidence to deal with the conflicting demands and uncertainties that so often arise to undermine the most well thought-out plan. Written in plain English, Simultaneous Management is perfect managers who need to operate in the real world, as well as faculty and students in a classroom. You'll learn the 9 commonsense principles of project management (systematic and integrative planning, timely decisions adjusted to uncertainty, isolation and absorption, inward and outward leadership, teamwork, overlapping of phases, simple procedures, intensive communication, and systematic monitoring). Many project management texts are great when it comes to theory, but few succeed in converting industry experience into academic philosophy and principles the way Simultaneous Management does. The author shares dozens of case studies that illustrate key guiding principles, and how to apply them under the harsh glare of everyday project experience. He also provides a range of easy-to-use tools (such as the Decision Matrix and the Critical Assumptions Matrix) and clear instructions on implementing them when turbulence strikes your next project.

Book excerpt: Competitive edge in today's world markets can only be achieved by an integrated approach to manufacturing. Concurrent or Simultaneous Engineering offers the promise of a reduced product development cycle, using complex technologies to satisfy customer demand for high quality, competitively-priced products brought to market in minimum time. The CONSENS implementation of Concurrent/Simultaneous Engineering (CSE) is an integrated package developed over recent years by some of the leading manufacturers and research institutes in Europe. It is the product of the flagship EU research project into the use of IT in Manufacturing led by the Fraunhofer Institute in Stuttgart. In particular, this study describes the management of change, network organisation, CONSENS architecture and module integration, SiFrame Management Information System, design for CSE and industrial implementations of CONSENS.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been increased interest in examining the treatment of language problems across different levels of society, ranging from individual interactional issues to language policy and planning at the national or supra-national level. Among the various approaches to tackle this issue, Language Management Theory (LMT) provides a framework to address behaviour towards language problems on differet levels explicitly and comprehensively. Using LMT as a unifying theoretical concept, the chapters in this volume examine the links between micro and macro dimensions in their analyses of a variety of language problems in Asian and European contexts. This body of work illustrates that the LMT framework is able to show the characteristics of different dimensions clearly, especially when combined with a conceptualization of the micro and macro as a continuum of intertwining elements. This volume will appeal both to those interested in language policy and planning as well as those interested in interaction between speakers from different language backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, project management expert Dr. Alexander Laufer leads an all-star team of practitioners and thought leaders in presenting a powerful project leadership framework. Laufer’s framework addresses the toughest challenges of new product development: large, complex projects composed of many diverse, geographically distributed, and highly interdependent components; organizational change; and repeated and risky tasks. Laufer reveals core leadership principles that are crucial to successful project leadership in dynamic and complex environments, regardless of industry, project goals, or stakeholders. Then, together with his contributors, he presents eight chapter-length case studies covering exceptionally challenging projects in a wide spectrum of industries and products – from developing missiles to reorganizing companies, building spacecraft and dairy plants to flying solar-powered airplanes. Readers will discover new ways to unleash the power of autonomy and learning; adapt to change on a timely basis; “give up” control without “losing” control; use face-to-face interaction to maximize alignment; manage “no fun” missions in hostile environments; deliver on bold ideas through sheer preparation; learn from practice – and unlearn lessons that need to be unlearned. Mastering the Leadership Role in Project Management will be invaluable to executives, project leaders, and aspiring project leaders in all organizations – regardless of their project goals, backgrounds, or experience.

Although the book does not include all developments, which would have entailed a much longer treatise, this work is written through the lens of decades of experiences and allows readers to understand the development of independent simultaneous sourcing. The relationships between data acquisition and data processing are discussed because never before have they been so intertwined as in this area. In addition to describing the underlying technologies, this book also is a user-guide which discusses survey design and acquisition and decribes the sensitivities of the processing algorithms which can allow simultaneous source technology to succeed. The audience for this book includes acquisition and processing geophysicists who will work with these data as well as those who require only an overview of the state of the art; and, even though they may not need the full technical details, they may want to know the limitations and advantages of using simultaneous sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive text of intensive care would readily fill the equivalent of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. This is because the diseases treated are both numerous and varied; thus the patient can be medical, surgical, trauma or obstetric. It follows that the sum total of knowledge which needs to be available is truly encyclopaedic. This compact volume represents only a fragment of such information. The contributors were chosen because of their experience and because their methods were well-tried. The text therefore summarizes the best of current therapy and includes the controversial. The contributors come from four countries, adding an international flavour. One topic - The Recovery Room - outside the confines of intensive care has been included for two reasons. The recovery room is an important but neglected aspect of care, and it also seems important to define its relationships with the intensive care unit. It is hoped that the book will help the nurses and doctors involved in intensive care and, therefore, the patient. ERIC SHERWOOD JONES Vll Contributors P. M. ASHWORTH K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Issue on Advances in Modeling and Management of Urban Water Networks (UWNs) explores four important topics of research in the context of UWNs: asset management, modeling of demand and hydraulics, energy recovery, and pipe burst identification and leakage reduction. In the first topic, the multi-objective optimization of interventions on the network is presented to find trade-off solutions between costs and efficiency. In the second topic, methodologies are presented to simulate and predict demand and to simulate network behavior in emergency scenarios. In the third topic, a methodology is presented for the multi-objective optimization of pump-as-turbine (PAT) installation sites in transmission mains. In the fourth topic, methodologies for pipe burst identification and leakage reduction are presented. As for the urban drainage systems (UDSs), the two explored topics are asset management, with a system upgrade to reduce flooding, and modeling of flow and water quality, with analyses on the transition from surface to pressurized flow, impact of water use reduction on the operation of UDSs, and sediment transport in pressurized pipes. The Special Issue also includes one paper dealing with the hydraulic modeling of an urban river with a complex cross-section.
