Book excerpt: Self-Interacting Dark Matter is a cosmologically consistent alternative theory to Cold Dark Matter that solves problems of the Cold Dark Matter model on small scales. Our N-body simulations demonstrate that Self-Interacting Dark Matter creates constant density cores that are consistent with observations of Local Group dwarf galaxies. However, the apparent problems of Cold Dark Matter have natural astrophysical contributions from baryonic supernovae feedback. The evidence for Self-Interacting Dark Matter taken together with the evidence for the need for better feedback models presents a challenging environment in which to place constraints on either. We use high resolution cosmological simulations to compare the detailed properties of galaxies at a range of masses with a focus on dwarf galaxies which are the most dark matter dominated galaxies in the universe. We conclude that it is possible that velocity dependent Self-Interacting Dark Matter could explain the common mass scale of dark matter on small scales, the too big to fail problem, and the core versus cusp problem even in the absence of strong stellar feedback; however, baryonic processes offer solutions to these same problems. We find that once baryon physics and outflows are introduced, cores are created in both Self-Interacting Dark Matter and Cold Dark Matter cosmologies.

Book excerpt: Observations to date have shown that the Universe is probably flat and composed mainly of baryons (",4%), dark matter (",26%) and dark energy ("'70%). Even though these observations provide us with a wealth of information, they fail to explain the nature of more than 90% of our Universe or to include known particles such as neutrinos in the standard model of Cosmology. We attempt here to show how future experiments can, with 'all hemisphere' surveys of the sky, probe further properties of dark energy that might give us an answer as to what its nature is and also show a concrete signal of neutrinos in cosmology. A deep redshift survey would be able to produce an accurate measurement of the power spectrum at different redshifts, thus helping us to probe the evolution of the components of the universe, including dark energy (Abdalla & Rawlings, 2005). A high resolution imaging survey of the sky would allow us to measure the shear power spectrum accurately and provide results orthogonal to existing or future constraints (Rawlings et al., 2004). Both surveys will be available, in the radio part of the spectrum, with the next generation of radio telescopes/interferometers. Even though this next generation of instruments will only be available by the next decade, theoretical predictions on these models are currently required given that these projects are being designed now (Blake et al., 2004). We estimate the possible answers these surveys will provide during the next decade in the case of dark energy (Abdalla et al., 2006) and neutrinos (Abdalla & Rawlings, 2006).

Book excerpt: Current and upcoming cosmological surveys are turning their eyes towards the late time universe in an attempt to answer fundamental questions about its composition and the physical laws that govern it. Given the non-linear nature of the observables studied by these surveys, perturbative modeling approaches have limited faculty. Thus, non-perturbative simulation approaches are necessary in order to connect theory with observation and harness the statistical power contained in the deluge of data that will be collected in the coming years. In this thesis, I discuss a number of efforts, all centered around using simulations to interpret data and aid analyses with wide field galaxy surveys. The first part of this thesis will focuses on a model for galaxy formation based on the evolution of dark matter halos and subhalos in high resolution N-body simulations, and its extension to large volume, low resolution lightcone simulations. I then show the application of this model to the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the most precise weak lensing survey to date. In particular, I present the suite of simulations that I created with this model and show that it agrees well with the first year of DES (DES Y1) data. I will then demonstrate how this suite was used to test the analysis choices made in the DES Y1 analysis of weak lensing and galaxy clustering. Finally, I discuss an effort to use cosmological simulations as models for highly non-linear observables in galaxy surveys. First I will present a well validated suite of simulations suitable for this type of modeling, which efficiently spans a large cosmological parameter space. I will then overview the models that we built from these simulations, and the outlook for applying them to upcoming data in order to use it to its fullest capacity.

These subhalos are assumed have a mass distribution that extends down to the smallest mass in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) hierarchy, which lies below the current resolution limit of simulations. Substructure has important ramifications for indirect dark matter detection experiments as the signal depends sensitively on the small-scale density distribution of dark matter in the Galactic halo. A clumpy halo produces a stronger signal than halos where the density is a smooth function of radius. However, the small-scale Universe presents a daunting challenge for models of structure formation. In the CDM paradigm, structures form in a hierarchical fashion, with small-scale perturbations collapsing first to form halos that then grow via mergers. However, near the bottom of the hierarchy, dark matter structures form nearly simultaneously across a wide range of scales. To explore these small scales, I use a series of simulations of scale-free cosmological models, where the initial density power spectrum is a power-law. I can effectively examine various scales in the Universe by using the index in these artificial cosmologies as a proxy for scale. This approach is not new, but my simulations are larger than previous such simulations by a factor of 3 or more. My results call into question the often made assumption that the subhalo population is scale-free. The subhalo population does depend on the mass of the host. By combining my study with others, I construct a phenomenological model for the subhalo mass function. This model shows that the full subhalo hierarchy does not greatly boost the dark matter annihilation flux of a host halo. Thus, the enhancement of the Galactic halo signature due to substructure can not alone account the observed flux of cosmic rays produced by annihilating dark matter. Finally, I examine the nonlinear power spectrum, which is used to determine cosmological parame.

This background was estimated through a novel method involving kinematically analogous events but including a well-measured muon. For cosmological constraints on the nature of dark energy, morphological statistics called Minkowski functionals (MFs) to extract the non-Gaussian information of gravitational lensing are studied. Measuring lensing MFs from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing survey (CFHTLenS), the author clearly shows that MFs can be powerful statistics beyond the conventional approach with the two-point correlation function. Combined with the two-point correlation function, MFs can constrain the equation of state of dark energy with a precision level of approximately 3–4 % in upcoming surveys with sky coverage of 20,000 square degrees. On the topic of dark matter, the author studied the cross-correlation of gravitational lensing and the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Dark matter annihilation is among the potential contributors to the EGB. The cross-correlation is a powerful probe of signatures of dark matter annihilation, because both cosmic shear and gamma-ray emission originate directly from the same dark matter distribution in the universe. The first measurement of the cross-correlation using a real data set obtained from CFHTLenS and the Fermi Large Area Telescope was performed. Comparing the result with theoretical predictions, an independent constraint was placed on dark matter annihilation. Future lensing surveys will be useful to constrain on the canonical value of annihilation cross section for a wide range of mass of dark matter annihilation.
