This book was released on 1980 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased flood damages in the Red River of the North prompted investigations into the probable causes of increased flood severity. Increased flooding may be related to the recently common practice of installing agricultural drain tiles and ditches. This study evaluates thirteen hydrologic models to determine which are best suited to the analysis of the causes of increased flooding. Three models, the Hydrocomp Simulation Program Fortran version (HSPF), the Runoff and Routing model (RROUT) and the Minnesota Model for Depressional Storage (MMDW) hold the greatest promise. Book excerpt: Agricultural regions in the Midwest have contributed large nitrogen (N) loads to the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River Basin (MARB) causing poor water quality downstream in the Gulf of Mexico. The Iowa Watershed Approach (IWA) has provided funding to nine agricultural watersheds in Iowa to build conservation practices that provide flood protection and support water quality improvements. The English River Watershed is an IWA watershed and it has been closely studied to site potential locations for conservation practices. Nutrient reduction wetlands constitute a conservation practice that has been used to provide nitrate (NO3) removal from agricultural runoff. Thirty-nine potential Agricultural Conservation Practice Framework (ACPF) wetland locations have been sited in the Headwaters North English, a sub-watershed of the English River. This study models the NO3 reduction of the wetlands using Hydrological Simulation Program - FORTRAN (HSPF). This model was calibrated based on three years of data collected from high-frequency (fifteen-minute) water quality sensors located at the inlet and outlet of a constructed wetland in northern Iowa. The results from the model show an average 11.7% NO3 reduction downstream of the wetlands. The simulated NO3 reductions in the thirty-nine wetlands range from 36.3 to 94.0%, which match quite closely to the NO3-N removal efficiencies reported in other Iowa wetland studies.
