Book excerpt: Buoyancy-driven diffusion flames have been widely studied as a canonical fire configuration due to practical and scientific interests. Numerical investigations are conducted in this dissertation to improve understandings of interactions and couplings among turbulence, chemistry, soot, and multiphase radiation in buoyancy-driven diffusion flames. A high-fidelity modeling framework based on OpenFOAM-5.x, including detailed models for chemistry, radiation, and soot, is developed to improve the numerical accuracy and the computational efficiency with scale-resolved simulations. A Monte Carlo ray tracing (MCRT) based radiation solver coupled with line-by-line databases is developed to describe gas and soot radiation. Detailed and efficient radiation models for water mists are developed and coupled with the MCRT solver. An adaptive hybrid integration chemistry solver is implemented to speed up finite-rate chemistry integration. A semi-empirical two-equation soot model is incorporated to describe soot dynamics. The developed multi-physical platform is systematically verified through a series of combustion-radiation systems including a laminar ethylene diffusion flame and four laminar methane diffusion flames with good agreement. The developed platform is subsequently employed to investigate a laboratory-scale turbulent pool fire. Good agreement with experiments on radiative heat fluxes, and with theories on flame temperature, velocity and puffing frequency, is achieved. Detailed investigations on interactions among chemistry, soot, radiation, and turbulence are performed to gain physical insights on modeling chemistry, soot and radiation. Drawn on the database from high-fidelity pool fire simulations, three physics-based reduced-order models including a flamelet model considering re-absorption, an optimized two-step mechanism for chemistry, and a simple soot model based on the laminar smoke point concept, are developed. Encouraging results are obtained using the reduced-order models with considerable savings in computational cost. Finally, to investigate radiative attenuation of water mists in fire suppression, a radiation model considering anisotropic scattering for water mists is developed and validated against theoretical values, and is adopted to obtain benchmark results for development of reduced-order radiation models.

Due to environmental and health concerns, soot emissions from combustion systems are tightly regulated, and this regulation will only become stricter in the future. To enable the design of the next generation of low-emission combustion systems, predictive numerical simulations will be required. However, soot is a particularly difficult modeling problem due to the needs for high-fidelity models for soot itself in addition to chemistry and turbulence. This dissertation seeks to develop an integrated modeling framework based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for soot evolution in turbulent reacting flows. The final objective is the demonstration and evaluation of the model in an actual aircraft combustor. In order to enable these high-fidelity simulations, three component models have been developed. First, a detailed soot model is developed within the framework of the Method of Moments. New models for soot aggregation and fragmentation are proposed, and closure of the moment source terms is achieved with the Hybrid Method of Moments (HMOM), an accurate yet computationally efficient method. Second, a new turbulent combustion model is developed based on the Radiation Flamelet/Progress Variable (RFPV) model that can account for the removal of precursors from the gas-phase to form soot particles. Third, a subfilter PDF model is developed to account for the unresolved small-scale interactions between soot, turbulence, and chemistry. The subfilter PDF approach is validated a priori against a recent DNS database of soot evolution in a turbulent nonpremixed flame. The integrated modeling approach is then validated against experimental measurements in two laboratory-scale turbulent nonpremixed flames: a natural gas piloted jet flame and an ethylene bluff body flame. Differences in soot evolution due to the differences in the large-scale mixing in the two flames are discussed. The validated model is then applied to the simulation of a Pratt & Whitney aircraft combustor. Two operating points are simulated to assess the ability of the integrated model to reproduce quantitative trends in soot emissions.

Emphasis is on interactions among turbulence, chemistry and radiation (turbulence-chemistry-radiation interactions – TCRI) in Reynolds-averaged and large-eddy simulations. Subsequent chapters cover: chemically reacting turbulent flows; radiation properties, Reynolds transport equation (RTE) solution methods, and TCRI; radiation effects in laminar flames; TCRI in turbulent flames; and high-pressure combustion systems. This Brief presents integrated approach that includes radiation at the outset, rather than as an afterthought. It stands as the most recent developments in physical modeling, numerical algorithms, and applications collected in one monograph.

Book excerpt: Although many books have been written on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and many written on combustion, most contain very limited coverage of the combination of CFD and industrial combustion. Furthermore, most of these books are written at an advanced academic level, emphasize theory over practice, and provide little help to engineers who need to use CFD for combustion modeling. Computational Fluid Dynamics in Industrial Combustion fills this gap in the literature. Focusing on topics of interest to the practicing engineer, it codifies the many relevant books, papers, and reports written on this combined subject into a single, coherent reference. It looks at each topic from a somewhat narrow perspective to see how that topic affects modeling in industrial combustion. The editor and his team of expert authors address these topics within three main sections: Modeling Techniques-The basics of CFD modeling in combustion Industrial Applications-Specific applications of CFD in the steel, aluminum, glass, gas turbine, and petrochemical industries Advanced Techniques-Subjects rarely addressed in other texts, including design optimization, simulation, and visualization Rapid increases in computing power and significant advances in commercial CFD codes have led to a tremendous increase in the application of CFD to industrial combustion. Thorough and clearly representing the techniques and issues confronted in industry, Computational Fluid Dynamics in Industrial Combustion will help bring you quickly up to date on current methods and gain the ability to set up and solve the various types of problems you will encounter.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simulation of fire scenarios requires the numerical modeling of various complex process, particularly the gaseous combustion of hydrocarbons including soot production and radiative transfers in a turbulent. The turbulent nature of the flow induces interactions between these processes that need to be taken accurately into account. The purpose of this thesis is to implement a transported Probability Density function method to model these interactions precisely. In conjunction with the flamelet model, the Lindstedt model, and a wide-band correlated-k model, the composition joint-PDF transport equation is solved using the Stochastic Eulerian Fields method. The model is validated by simulating 12 turbulent jet flames covering a large range of Reynolds numbers and fuel sooting propensity. Model prediction are found to be in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Second, the effects of turbulence-radiation interactions (TRI) on soot emission are studied in details, showing that TRI tends to increase soot radiative emission due to temperature fluctuations, but that this increase is smaller for higher Reynolds numbers and higher soot loads. This is due to the negative correlation between soot absorption coefficient and the Planck function. Finally, the effects of taking into account the correlation between mixture fraction and enthalpy defect on flame structure and radiative characteristics are also studied on an ethylene flame, showing that it has weak effect on the mean flame structure but tends to inhibit both temperature fluctuations and radiative loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent combustion sits at the interface of two important nonlinear, multiscale phenomena: chemistry and turbulence. Its study is extremely timely in view of the need to develop new combustion technologies in order to address challenges associated with climate change, energy source uncertainty, and air pollution. Despite the fact that modeling of turbulent combustion is a subject that has been researched for a number of years, its complexity implies that key issues are still eluding, and a theoretical description that is accurate enough to make turbulent combustion models rigorous and quantitative for industrial use is still lacking. In this book, prominent experts review most of the available approaches in modeling turbulent combustion, with particular focus on the exploding increase in computational resources that has allowed the simulation of increasingly detailed phenomena. The relevant algorithms are presented, the theoretical methods are explained, and various application examples are given. The book is intended for a relatively broad audience, including seasoned researchers and graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics and computational science, engine designers and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) practitioners, scientists at funding agencies, and anyone wishing to understand the state-of-the-art and the future directions of this scientifically challenging and practically important field.
