Book excerpt: On Tuesday 25 July 2000 Air France Flight AFR 4590, a Concorde registered F-BTSC, took off from Paris Charles de Gaulle, to undertake a charter flight to New York with nine crew members and one hundred passengers on board. During takeoff from runway 26 right at Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport, a tyre was damaged. A major fire broke out. The aircraft was unable to gain height or speed and crashed onto a hotel, killing all 109 people on board and 4 on the ground. The crash would become the end of the Concorde era.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and Related Topics by : Claude-Michel Brauner
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and Related Topics written by Claude-Michel Brauner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains invited lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and related topics, held in. Lyon (France), April 27 - 30, 1987. This conference was planned to fit in with the two-month visit of Professor G.S.S. Ludford to the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. He kindly agreed to chair the Scientific and Organizing Committee and actively helped to initiate the meeting. His death in December 1986 is an enormous loss to the scientific community in general, and in particular, to the people involved in the present enterprise. The subject of mathematical modeling in combustion is too large for a single conference, and the selection of topics re flects both areas of recent research activity and areas of in terest to Professor G.S.S. Ludford, to whose memory the Advanced Workshop and this present volume are dedicated. The meeting was divided into seven specialized sessions detonation theory, mathematical analysis, numerical treatment of combustion problems, flame theory, experimental and industrial aspects, complex chemistry, and turbulent combustion. It brought together researchers and engineers from University and Industry (see below the closing remarks of the workshop by Prof. N. Peters). The articles in this volume have been judged and accepted on their scientific quality, and language corrections may have been sacrificed in order to allow quick dissemination of knowledge to prevail.

Book Synopsis Fluid-structure Interaction by : Jean-François Sigrist
Download or read book Fluid-structure Interaction written by Jean-François Sigrist and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the numerical simulation of fluid–structure interaction (FSI) for application in marine engineering. Fluid–Structure Interaction details a wide range of modeling methods (numerical, semi-analytical, empirical), calculation methods (finite element, boundary element, finite volume, lattice Boltzmann method) and numerical approaches (reduced order models and coupling strategy, among others). Written by a group of experts and researchers from the naval sector, this book is intended for those involved in research or design who are looking to gain an overall picture of hydrodynamics, seakeeping and performance under extreme loads, noise and vibration. Using a concise, didactic approach, the book describes the ways in which numerical simulation contributes to modeling and understanding fluid–structure interaction for designing and optimizing the ships of the future.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Computational Structural Mechanics by : Pierre Ladeveze
Download or read book Nonlinear Computational Structural Mechanics written by Pierre Ladeveze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats computational modeling of structures in which strong nonlinearities are present. It is therefore a work in mechanics and engineering, although the discussion centers on methods that are considered parts of applied mathematics. The task is to simulate numerically the behavior of a structure under various imposed excitations, forces, and displacements, and then to determine the resulting damage to the structure, and ultimately to optimize it so as to minimize the damage, subject to various constraints. The method used is iterative: at each stage an approximation to the displacements, strains, and stresses throughout the structure is computated and over all times in the interval of interest. This method leads to a general approach for understanding structural models and the necessary approximations.
Book Synopsis Modeling and Simulation of Turbulent Flows by : Roland Schiestel
Download or read book Modeling and Simulation of Turbulent Flows written by Roland Schiestel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title provides the fundamental bases for developing turbulence models on rational grounds. The main different methods of approach are considered, ranging from statistical modelling at various degrees of complexity to numerical simulations of turbulence. Each of these various methods has its own specific performances and limitations, which appear to be complementary rather than competitive. After a discussion of the basic concepts, mathematical tools and methods for closure, the book considers second order closure models. Emphasis is placed upon this approach because it embodies potentials for clarifying numerous problems in turbulent shear flows. Simpler, generally older models are then presented as simplified versions of the more general second order models. The influence of extra physical parameters is also considered. Finally, the book concludes by examining large Eddy numerical simulations methods. Given the book’s comprehensive coverage, those involved in the theoretical or practical study of turbulence problems in fluids will find this a useful and informative read.
