The DCQD method can be utilized to completely determine the quantum dynamical superoperator acting on an open quantum system. In contrast to all other known quantum process tomography (QPT) schemes, this scheme relies on error-detection techniques and does not require any quantum state tomography. By analysis of the number of required experimental configurations and quantum operations in a given Hilbert space, it is demonstrated that this approach is more efficient than all other known QPT schemes. DCQD can be applied, by construction, to the task of partial characterization of quantum dynamics. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the DCQD algorithm can be efficiently used for Hamiltonian identification, and also for simultaneous determination of both the relaxation time T1 and dephasing time T2. Furthermore, it is argued that the DCQD scheme is experimentally implementable in a variety of prominent quantum information processing systems, and it is explicitly shown how it can be physically realized in photonic systems with present day technology. The ability of a quantum system to perform arbitrary or "universal" quantum operations is restricted to its naturally available/controllable interactions. It is shown that quantum systems with an effective exchange interaction can be made operationally universal by utilizing a subspace or a subsystem of the combined principal system and an auxiliary system. Moreover, it is demonstrated that universal fault-tolerant quantum computation can be performed on these systems without utilizing any form of single-qubit control. Characterization and control of open quantum systems are among the central and fundamental problems in quantum physics. A crucial primitive is the characterization of the dynamics of a quantum system that has an unknown interaction with its embedding environment. Another essential task is to control the decoherence of an open quantum system by using naturally available interactions. This thesis addresses the above fundamental problems in two separate parts. In the first part, a general theory for direct and complete characterization of quantum dynamics is introduced. In the second part, a scheme for performing arbitrary quantum operations on spin-based quantum systems is presented. This scheme can be implemented in the presence of environmental noise and faulty quantum operations without need to control the state of spins individually.

Book excerpt: One of the biggest challenges in the physical realization of quantum information processing (QIP) is the precise control of the system. In order to achieve this, we characterize the gates, errors, and noise occurring in experimental setups. In this thesis we develop and further study characterization methods, putting particular emphasis on the scalability problem: O(D4) parameters describe the dynamics of an open quantum system of dimension D, thus O(D4) resources are in principle required to characterize it -- which is a problem in QIP where the desired systems are large (D = 2n for n qubits). We first study the fidelity decay (also called Loschmidt echo) of the system, for many steps under the progressive randomization due to a one-qubit twirl. We show how this quantity encodes useful information about the process begin twirled. We then present a method to measure the magnitude of the multi-body correlations that scales as O(nw), when only up to w-body interactions are expected among the n qubits. We implemented this method in a four-qubit liquid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) QIP device, demonstrating its potential and feasibility. The experimental work also pointed out the need for robust procedures and the role of implementation errors, while deepening our knowledge of NMR QIP dynamics. We also report on several practical aspects of the experiment, including details on twirls using random rotations and Clifford operators. We furthermore relate this work to recent developments in the community, arriving to a more comprehensive protocol and establishing an intrinsic hierarchy of characterization algorithms. Finally, we study the many-step fidelity decay when using a flawed twirl, thus acknowledging the most realistic scenario where we have a faulty device attempting to characterize itself. Our preliminary work points towards the use of a many-step scheme that promises robust scalable tools to characterize the twirl operators themselves.

Book excerpt: This thesis work analyses aspects of dissipative quantum dynamics, with a view to look for further possibilities of controlling the dynamics with shaped laser pulses. The first part concerns the problem of efficient population transfer in mesoscopic zero-dimensional solid state systems - InAs quantum dots embedded in GaAs matrix. In these systems the consequences of laser driving induced dissipation of exciton dynamics are analyzed, in relation to adiabatic population transfer. Specifically, the problem of robust creation of exciton and biexciton states are addressed through numerical simulations and analytical approaches using a non-Markovian density matrix based analysis, suitable for dealing with dissipative quantum dynamics under strong laser fields. A physical picture describing phonon induced dissipation among dressed state has emerged as a consistent interpretation of the underlying dynamics. Furthermore, suitable parameter regimes where efficient population transfer can be achieved are proposed. The second part deals with the population transfer to high lying vibrational states of the CO stretching mode of carboxy-hemoglobin molecule in the native protein environment. On the basis of a fluctuating potential for the CO stretching mode, ultrafast pump-probe spectra are simulated using quantum wave packet propagation. To this end, Local Control Theory was employed to find design a set of laser pulses which accomplish the 'vibrational ladder climbing' and selective state preparation despite the detrimental fluctuations induced by the protein environment. These results will be providing benchmarks for the future experimental efforts.
