Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various aspects of the behaviour of fixed bed reactors supporting highly exothermic reactions, relevant to stable -optimal design and control, have been studied using detailed mathematical models. In order to establish the form of the simplest basic structure, two methods of describing radial heat transfer in two dimensional packed beds have been examined. It is shown that a lumped parameter single phase heat transfer model which implicitly incorporates the heterogeneous structure can account not only for the radial heat flux associated with both the fluid and solid phases but is also the more appropriate formulation since it allows the important reaction rate limitations due to intraparticle mass transfer to be properly estimated. Using this two dimensional, heterogeneous dynamic model of the reactor it has been possible to evaluate a simpler one dimensional formulation. It is shown that the latter gives an adequate-description of the dynamic behaviour of the system, provided that the overall heat transfer coefficient between the fluid and the coolant is suitably defined, and may, therefore, be used for general studies of reactor performance. Consideration has been-given to the response of the reactor to sinusoidal perturbations of the inlet conditions. It has been found that at certain frequencies of oscillation temperature runaway may develop before a safe quasi-stationary state is reached. A detailed examination of this behaviour has shown that in addition to the non-linear effects the difference in the speeds of propagation of the concentration and temperature waves along the reactor as a result of the heterogeneity of the system is also very significant. The effect of both cocurrent and countercurrent cooling of a single reactor tube has been examined. The behaviour for perturbations in coolant temperature is similar to that for inlet temperature and indicates potential difficulties in the design of control systems. A mathematical model of a multitubular reactor with crossflow cooling has been developed and used to identify some of the problems which may arise in these systems. In particular, considerable interaction between the individual reactor tubes occurs when significant conversion of the reactant takes place. This causes tubes in different parts of the bundle to exhibit different behaviour and with countercurrent cooling this may give rise to multiple steady states due to the feedback of heat within the system. A technique has been developed for predicting regions of parametric sensitivity and temperature runaway in heterogeneous fixed bed reactors. The relationship between this form of instability and that due to multiple states of the catalyst pellet has been demonstrated. Application of this method to both the design and control of a reactor is discussed and it is shown that it provides an insight as to the behaviour of the system since it makes possible the establishment of a relationship between local and global reactor stability and the operating variables.
Book Synopsis Diameter-Transformed Fluidized Bed by : Youhao Xu
Download or read book Diameter-Transformed Fluidized Bed written by Youhao Xu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts forward the concept of the Diameter-Transformed Fluidized Bed (DTFB): a fluidized bed characterized by the coexistence of multiple flow regimes and reaction zones, achieved by transforming the bed into several sections of different diameters. It reviews fundamental aspects, including computational fluid dynamics simulations and industrial practices in connection with DTFB. In particular, it highlights an example concerning the development of maximizing iso-paraffins (MIP) reactors for regulating complex, fluid catalytic cracking reactions in petroleum refineries. The book is a must-have for understanding how academic and industrial researchers are now collaborating in order to develop novel catalytic processes.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helps researchers develop new catalysts for sustainable fueland chemical production Reviewing the latest developments in the field, this bookexplores the in-situ characterization of heterogeneous catalysts, enabling readers to take full advantage of the sophisticatedtechniques used to study heterogeneous catalysts and reactionmechanisms. In using these techniques, readers can learn to improvethe selectivity and the performance of catalysts and how to preparecatalysts as efficiently as possible, with minimum waste. In-situ Characterization of Heterogeneous Catalysts featurescontributions from leading experts in the field of catalysis. Itbegins with an introduction to the fundamentals and thencovers: Characterization of electronic and structural properties ofcatalysts using X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy Techniques for structural characterization based on X-raydiffraction, neutron scattering, and pair distribution functionanalysis Microscopy and morphological studies Techniques for studying the interaction of adsorbates withcatalyst surfaces, including infrared spectroscopy, Ramanspectroscopy, EPR, and moderate pressure XPS Integration of techniques that provide information on thestructural properties of catalysts with techniques that facilitatethe study of surface reactions Throughout the book, detailed examples illustrate how techniquesfor studying catalysts and reaction mechanisms can be applied tosolve a broad range of problems in heterogeneous catalysis.Detailed figures help readers better understand how and why thetechniques discussed in the book work. At the end of each chapter,an extensive set of references leads to the primary literature inthe field. By explaining step by step modern techniques for the in-situcharacterization of heterogeneous catalysts, this book enableschemical scientists and engineers to better understand catalystbehavior and design new catalysts for green, sustainable fuel andchemical production.

This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major topic of the book is the investigation of steady and unsteady processes in reactors with a fixed catalyst bed and the formulation of practical recommendations for realizing catalytic processes of high efficiency. The material is based mainly on research carried out at the Novosibirsk Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Most of the information is technologically orientated and in presenting the subject matter mathematical calculations have often been omitted while the physical sense of the results obtained from the study of mathematical models is always discussed. The book has a comprehensive and detailed bibliography and keyword index. It will be especially useful for specialists in the field of chemical engineering at industrial companies who are working on the development of catalytic processes, in the operation of chemical reactors and for students and post-graduate students of the same disciplines.

Download or read book Modeling Chemistry and Flow in Catalytic Fixed-bed Reactors with Detailed Geometry written by Ying Dong and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, three-dimensional CFD models were developed and applied to simulate catalytic fixed bed reactors with different types of packing configuration and reactions. A spatially resolved profile measurement technique was applied in this work to critically validate the simulation results, and to calibrate parameters required in the model. This work demonstrates that detailed reactor modeling and profile measurements are useful tools for achieving an in-depth understanding of the interactions between flow, heat and mass transfer and catalytic reactions in fixed bed reactors. Furthermore, with the comprehensive knowledge gained from both methods, a knowledge-based reactor optimization approach can be put forward.
