Book Synopsis Commissioning of the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeters by : Erfan Rezaie
Download or read book Commissioning of the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeters written by Erfan Rezaie and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATLAS, a multi-purpose detector built at the LHC at CERN, requires an extensive commissioning campaign to be ready for proton-proton collisions. In this work, we focus on the commissioning of the liquid Argon (LAr) calorimeters, with emphasis on commissioning with cosmic rays. First we outline one phase of the commissioning work, which involves testing of the front-end electronics of the two endcap calorimeters. We then describe two cosmic ray generators as input to a Monte-Carlo simulation of cosmic rays in ATLAS, and compare their results. Finally, we explain a technique developed for this work which uses information from the Tile calorimeters to predict the timing of cosmic rays within the LAr calorimeters, because cosmic rays occur randomly in time whereas the electronics are clocked at 1/40.08 MHz. The results from this analysis tool are compared to default tools, using both simulated and real cosmic ray data in the calorimeters.

Book Synopsis Masking Problematic Channels in the Liquid Argon Calorimeter for the High-level Trigger of ATLAS. by :
Download or read book Masking Problematic Channels in the Liquid Argon Calorimeter for the High-level Trigger of ATLAS. written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read-out channels in the liquid argon (LAr) calorimeter of the ATLAS detector are susceptible to various kinds of faults, which can impair the selection of events made by the trigger system. General-purpose software tools have been developed for dealing with problematic calorimeter channels. In order to give High-Level Trigger (HLT) algorithms robustness against detector problems, these tools have been applied in the HLT calorimeter data preparation code to mask problematic channels in the LAr calorimeter. Timing measurements and optimizations have been conducted to assess and minimize the impact of these operations on the execution speed of HLT algorithms. The efficacy of the bad-channel masking has been demonstrated using cosmic-ray data.

Book Synopsis Studies with a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber by : Michael Schenk
Download or read book Studies with a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber written by Michael Schenk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Schenk evaluates new technologies and methods, such as cryogenic read-out electronics and a UV laser system, developed to optimise the performance of large liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPC). Amongst others, the author studies the uniformity of the electric field produced by a Greinacher high-voltage generator operating at cryogenic temperatures, measures the linear energy transfer (LET) of muons and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient of electrons in liquid argon. The results are obtained by analysing events induced by cosmic-ray muons and UV laser beams. The studies are carried out with ARGONTUBE, a prototype LArTPC in operation at the University of Bern, Switzerland, designed to investigate the feasibility of drift distances of up to five metres for electrons in liquid argon.
Book Synopsis Particle Detectors by : Hermann Kolanoski
Download or read book Particle Detectors written by Hermann Kolanoski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.

Book Synopsis A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector by : Lesya Horyn
Download or read book A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector written by Lesya Horyn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).
Book Synopsis Semiconductor Detector Systems by : Helmuth Spieler
Download or read book Semiconductor Detector Systems written by Helmuth Spieler and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor sensors patterned at the micron scale combined with custom-designed integrated circuits have revolutionized semiconductor radiation detector systems. Designs covering many square meters with millions of signal channels are now commonplace in high-energy physics and the technology is finding its way into many other fields, ranging from astrophysics to experiments at synchrotron light sources and medical imaging. This book is the first to present a comprehensive discussion of the many facets of highly integrated semiconductor detector systems, covering sensors, signal processing, transistors and circuits, low-noise electronics, and radiation effects. The diversity of design approaches is illustrated in a chapter describing systems in high-energy physics, astronomy, and astrophysics. Finally a chapter "Why things don't work" discusses common pitfalls. Profusely illustrated, this book provides a unique reference in a key area of modern science.
