Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation have proven invaluable to the design of various systems and planning of many experiments since the free-electron laser was invented in the 1970s. This thesis illustrates methods used for these tasks and for the validation and development of further theory. FEL systems and their components are described, briefly discussing how they fit into design considerations. Basic theory of FEL operation is reviewed, including the resonance condition, FEL wave and pendulum equations, and the concepts of undulator taper, extraction and beam quality. Two computer programs used for FEL simulation (FEL3D/FEL4D, developed at the Naval Postgraduate School, and Ginger, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) are discussed and compared, then applied to specific FEL cases. The cases studied serve to evaluate key performance characteristics of FELs. The final case study directly compares output from the two programs. In addition to this type of physics simulation, computer tools are also vital for component design. Relevant methods are illustrated using the example of an electrostatic cathode test cell and drawings made using the Los Alamos National Laboratories design tool, Poisson Superfish. After reviewing the principles involved and system constraints, a new test cell is designed for use with future NPS experiments. The effects of anodecathode spacing and anode aperture size are examined for two different anode configurations and recommendations are made for future design iterations.

Book excerpt: A detailed exploration of free electron laser (FEL) theory has been done in two areas. An exact solution to the phase-space trajectories in a linearly-polarized undulator has been obtained using a numerical simulation. The complicated phase-space motion caused by transverse undulator deflections makes a rigorous derivation for trajectories difficult, if not impossible. The numerical solution extends the understanding of electron trajectories by quantitatively describing the fast and slow components of motion. The Bessel function coupling coefficient, describing the slow evolution is found to be valid over a broad range of parameters even though its derivation is approximate. A second program has been developed that provides a simple, quick diagnostic for accelerator designers to evaluate how well a simulated beam design will perform as an FEL. The effect of beam quality conditions like energy, angular, and positional spread are shown to depend only on the initial conditions of the beam at the entrance to the undulator. This program takes the six phase-space coordinates of the beam directly from an accelerator simulation code, like PARMELA, and predicts its performance in an FEL system. This method substitutes for more lengthy, complex integrated simulations, like INEX, that require a CRAY computer.

Book excerpt: Free Electron Lasers consists of 10 chapters, which refer to fundamentals and design of various free electron laser systems, from the infrared to the xuv wavelength regimes. In addition to making a comparison with conventional lasers, a couple of special topics concerning near-field and cavity electrodynamics, compact and table-top arrangements and strong radiation induced exotic states of matter are analyzed as well. The control and diagnostics of such devices and radiation safety issues are also discussed. Free Electron Lasers provides a selection of research results on these special sources of radiation, concerning basic principles, applications and some interesting new ideas of current interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free electron laser (FEL) technology continues to advance, providing alternative solutions to existing and potential problems. The capabilities of an FEL with respect to tunability, power and efficiency make it an attractive choice when moving into new laser utilization fields. The initial design parameters, for any new system, offer a good base to begin system simulation tests in an effort to determine the best possible design. This is a study of the Novosibirsk design which is a prototype for the proposed SELENE FEL. The design uses a three-section, low-power optical klystron followed by a single-pass, high-power radiator. This system is inherently sensitive to electron beam quality, but affords flexibility in achieving the final design. The performance of the system is studied using the initial parameters. An FEL, configured as a simple, two section optical klystron is studied to determine the basic operating characteristics of a high current FEL klystron.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Free Electron Laser (FEL) provides a versatile method for producing laser light. Traditionally, FELs are complicated in design and occupy large research facilities. The primary goal of this thesis is to investigate a particular FEL design that is small in size and operates in the terahertz (THz) frequency regime. The optics materials requirements are explored for power levels ranging from mW to kW. Additionally, as part of a simpler design and in spite of the large amount of diffraction present at THz wavelengths, a waveguide will not be utilized as others have done previously. Laser beam clipping, which is defined as the absorption of the laser beam at the outer edges of the diffracted mode, and a shortened undulator are investigated as methods to support the elimination of the waveguide.

Book excerpt: The free electron laser (FEL) is among the latest technologies of interest to the U.S. military, in particular, the Navy. In naval applications, FEL laser would serve as a self-defense weapon system, protecting the ship from an array of threats including anti-surface cruise missiles and small boats. This system's potential range and deep magazine makes it ideal as point defense against incoming missiles. Its inexpensive cost of only a few dollars per engagement and multi-mission capability makes this future weapon system superior to the short-range missile-defense systems employed today. The most powerful FEL is currently located in Jefferson Lab, operating at 10 kW, two orders of magnitude short of the 1 MW power level required for weapons application. This thesis will describe the components and theory of operation of the FEL, as well as analyze two competing designs for the next step in the evolution of the future weapon system, the 100 kW FEL, proposed by Brookhaven and Los Alamos National Labs. Due to advances in NPS simulation techniques for the amplifier configuration, a more in depth analysis including the effects of electron beam tilt and shift is performed for the first time on these proposed designs.

Book excerpt: As interest in high power free electron lasers (FELs) has increased, the FEL and accelerator communities have been faced with the need to develop high bunch charge, high repetition rate, low emittance electron sources for use as the driving accelerators for FELs. A novel superconducting, radio-frequency (SRF) gun/booster has been designed by and built for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) FEL Beam Physics Lab in collaboration with Niowave, Inc., for studying this electron source regime. The NPS SRF gun/booster operates at 500 MHz and is based upon a quarter-wave structure. It incorporates many features that make it desirable for studying the cathodes and transport regimes necessary to explore high bunch charge beams, including adjustable field focusing, short transport out of the gun, and the ability to change cathode types and materials. After attaining "first beam" in June 2010, the NPS gun has been established as the first SRF electron gun in the United States. Initial results show excellent agreement with simulation with bunch charges of 110 pC and transverse emittance estimates of 4 mm-mrad. Additionally, a modal analysis tool for the NPS FEL simulation software is developed based upon the Hermite-Gaussian basis set. Using a minimization of mode coefficients approach, we decompose output optical fields for amplifier FEL designs and experiments for FEL optimization and comparison of laser output fields.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the free-electron laser (FEL) has demonstrated its value as a tunable source of bright, coherent radiation with photon energies up to the X-ray region. For such short radiation wavelengths, three-dimensional (3D) effects (due to diffraction, emittance and focusing) become significant and must be taken into consideration. In this work, we present a systematic, fully 3D theoretical formalism applicable to a range of concepts for compact, high-gain FELs. These include novel schemes involving the use of transverse gradient (TGU) or laser undulators. Our approach utilizes either a standard eigenmode analysis for constant-parameter systems or a non-eigenmode expansion technique in terms of orthogonal transverse modes for cases where the parameters of the electron beam and/or the undulator vary along the longitudinal direction. The results we obtain fully characterize the system (electron beam and radiation) in the linear regime of the interaction and are shown to be in excellent agreement with simulation. Moreover, the formalism developed here can be used in comprehensive, theory-based optimization studies, with significant applications in FEL design.
