This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of flight tests to determine the feasibility of using the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the differential mode (DGPS) to provide high accuracy, precision navigation and guidance for helicopter approaches to landing are presented. The airborne DGPS receiver and associated equipment is installed in a NASA UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The ground-based DGPS reference receiver is located at a surveyed test site and is equipped with a real-time VHF data link to transmit correction information to the airborne DGPS receiver. The corrected airborne DGPS information, together with the preset approach geometry, is used to calculate guidance commands which are sent to the aircraft's approach guidance instruments. The use of DGPS derived guidance for helicopter approaches to landing is evaluated by comparing the DGPS data with the laser tracker truth data. Both standard (3 degrees) and steep (6 degrees and 9 degrees) glidescope straight-in approaches were flown. DGPS positioning accuracy based on a time history analysis of the entire approach was 0.2 m (mean) +/- 1.8 m (2 sigma) laterally and -2.0 m (mean) +/- 3.5 m (2 sigma) vertically for 3 degree glidescope approaches, -0.1 m (mean) +/- 1.5 m (2 sigma) laterally and -1.1 m (mean) +/- 3.5 m (2 sigma) vertically for 6 degree glidescope approaches, and 0.2 m (mean) +/- 1.3 m (2 sigma) laterally and -1.0 m (mean) +/- 2.8 (2 sigma) vertically for 9 degree glidescope approaches. DGPS positioning accuracy at the 200 ft decision height on a standard 3 degree glidescope approach was 0.3 m (mean) +/- 1.5 m (2 sigma) laterally and -2.3 m (mean) +/- 1.6 m (2 sigma) vertically. These errors indicate that the helicopter position based on DGPS guidance satisfies the International Civil Aviation Organization Category 1 lateral and vertical accuracy requirements. Book Synopsis Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) for Flight Testing (Global Positioning System Differentiel (DGPS) Pour Les Essais en Vol). by :
Download or read book Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) for Flight Testing (Global Positioning System Differentiel (DGPS) Pour Les Essais en Vol). written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the potential of Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) as a positioning datum for flight test applications is thoroughly discussed. Current technology status and future trends are investigated to identify optimal system architectures for both the on-board and ground station components, and to define optimal strategies for DGPS data gathering during various flight testing tasks. Limitations of DGPS techniques are analyzed, and various possible integration schemes with other sensors are considered. Finally, the optimal architecture of an integrated position reference system suitable for a variety of flight test applications is identified. This volume provides comprehensive guidance on assessing the need for an determining the characteristics of DGPS based position reference systems for flight test activities. The specific goals are to make available to the NATO flight test community the best practices and advice for DGPS based systems architecture definition and equipment selection. A variety of flight test applications are examined and both real-time and post-mission DGPS data requirements are outlined. Particularly, DGPS accuracy, continuity and integrity issues are considered, and possible improvements achievable by means of signal augmentation strategies are identified. Possible architectures for integrating DGPS with other airborne sensors (e.g., Inertial Navigation, Radar Altimeter) are presented, with particular emphasis on current and likely future data fusion algorithms. Particular attention is devoted to simulation analysis in support of flight test activities. Finally, an outline of current research perspectives in the field of DGPS technology is given.

Book Synopsis SH-3 Helicopter/Global Positioning System Integration Analysis by :
Download or read book SH-3 Helicopter/Global Positioning System Integration Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Positioning System (GPS), the transmitted navigational signal, and the overall acquisition approach are explained. Navigational receiver components are functionally described and the hierarchy of platform integration and capability is discussed. Specifically explored is the integration of GPS into the Sikorsky SH-3 Helicopter. Performance comparisons of the medium versus high dynamic receiver, based solely on preliminary simulation data, indicate that at this time the medium dynamic receiver is the optimum configuration. Elimination of the doppler radar in lieu of the five channel receiver would only be possible after through over-water testing of the high dynamic set. The actual velocity accuracy of GPS receivers in a hovering helicopter is the main question yet to be answered. The overall mission effectiveness of the GPS equipped SH-3 Helicopter should be significantly improved because of an accurate, stand-alone navigation system. (Author).
Book Synopsis Technical Requirements for Benchmark Simulator-based Terminal Instrument Procedures (TERPS) Evaluation by : Anil V. Phatak
Download or read book Technical Requirements for Benchmark Simulator-based Terminal Instrument Procedures (TERPS) Evaluation written by Anil V. Phatak and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to take full advantage of the helicopter's unique flight characteristics, enhanced terminal instrument procedures (TERPS) need to be developed for a variety of non-standard operational situations. These include non-standard landing navigation aids, precision and non-precision approach profiles, landing sites, and avionics systems. Currently, TERPS criteria are largely established by extensive flight testing. This study examined the requirements for using helicopter cockpit simulators in place of flight testing to generate data necessary for enhanced TERPS development.
Book Synopsis Support of the System Test and Analysis Program for the Nationwide Differential Global Positioning System Modernization Program by : United States. Federal Highway Administration. Office of Operations
Download or read book Support of the System Test and Analysis Program for the Nationwide Differential Global Positioning System Modernization Program written by United States. Federal Highway Administration. Office of Operations and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nationwide Differential Global Positioning System (NDGPS) Modernization Program is a multiagency effort to examine the viability of long baseline carrier phase differential correction techniques. Phase I of this program analyzes broadcasting Global Positioning System observables from a single NDGPS site, Hagerstown, MD, to aid in determining the appropriate signal structure and compression techniques to support long range carrier phase operations. Phase II will install a second facility near Hawk Run, PA, enabling multiple baseline carrier and code phase navigation solutions. This first report verifies that the accuracy that can be achieved over a long baseline from a single facility is within the estimated 10-centimeter (95 percent) horizontal navigation accuracy hypothesized.
