Book Synopsis Translocal Geographies by : Ayona Datta
Download or read book Translocal Geographies written by Ayona Datta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together a wide range of original empirical research from locations and interconnected geographical contexts from Europe, Australasia, Asia, Africa, Central and Latin America, this book sets out a different agenda for mobility - one which emphasizes the enduring connectedness between, and embeddedness within, places during and after the experience of mobility. These issues are examined through the themes of home and family, neighbourhoods and city spaces and allow the reader to engage with migrants' diverse practices which are specifically local, yet spatially global. This book breaks new ground by arguing for a spatial understanding of translocality that situates the migrant experience within/across particular 'locales' without confining it to the territorial boundedness of the nation state. It will be of interest to academics and students of social and cultural geography, anthropology and transnational studies.
Book Synopsis The Film Industry in Brazil by : Randal Johnson
Download or read book The Film Industry in Brazil written by Randal Johnson and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking back through the prism of the severe economic crisis for filmmaking in the 1980s, The Film Industry in Brazil explores the unusual relationship between the state-supported industry, which often produced politically radical films, and the authoritarian regime that had held sway for twenty years. To ground his analysis, Johnson covers the early years of the film industry, 1898-1930; attempts at industrialization during the 1930s and 1940s; film industry congresses and government film boards, 1950-1966; the National Film Institute, 1966-1975; and the expansion of the state's role from 1969 through 1980.Well-conceived, carefully researched and documented, Johnson's study fills a major gap in film studies by tracing the development of this industry in Brazil, focusing specifically on its relationship to the state.
Book Synopsis The Family in Bahia, Brazil, 1870-1945 by : Dain Edward Borges
Download or read book The Family in Bahia, Brazil, 1870-1945 written by Dain Edward Borges and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1992-07 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the Brazilian family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries studies the relationship between the informal institution of the family and such formal social institutions as medicine, the law, organized politics, and the church. The author focuses primarily on middle- and upper-class families (for whom adequate documentation is available) and shows the change from a patriarchal model of the family to one that was more conjugal and nuclear, a change necessitated by an insecure and urbanizing economy. Nevertheless, Bahian families maintained many traditional values and traditional kin networks. The author examines the daily life and dynamics of households, including what is known about lower-class families, where consensual arrangements were the norm. He looks at the history of the medical profession, the legal profession, and the Catholic church, and he describes the attempts of each group to mobilize the family for its own political, social and cultural ends. The author argues that family ideology - and families themselves - resisted and transformed the efforts of these institutions to impose their will. The book also deals with the changes and continuities in Bahian attitudes and beliefs about courtship, honor, and the place of women, as well as the ways in which Bahians projected a familial ethic onto social relations outside the home. Within families, conduct was governed by a belief in the traditional rituals of 'life in the family circle': weekly family dinners at the table of an older relative, residence in family compounds around an old mansion (or in several apartments of a single building), nepotism in public bureaucracies, and the management of both small and large businesses by families and their relatives. Although these patterns of family life were transformed over time, this study demonstrates that such traditions did survive, even thrive, well into the twentieth century

The book will be of interest to students and scholars of theology and film, media, and communications.
Book Synopsis Brazilian National Cinema by : Lisa Shaw
Download or read book Brazilian National Cinema written by Lisa Shaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazilian cinema is one of the most influential national cinemas in Latin America and this wide-ranging study traces the evolution of Brazilian film from the silent era to the present day, including detailed studies of more recent international box-office hits, such as Central Station (1998) and City of God (2002). Brazilian National Cinema gives due importance to traditionally overlooked aspects of Brazilian cinema, such as popular genres, ranging from musical comedies (the chanchada) to soft-core porn films (the pornochanchada) and horror films, and also provides a fresh approach to the internationally acclaimed avant-garde Cinema Novo of the 1960s. Lisa Shaw and Stephanie Dennison apply recent theories on stardom, particularly relating to issues of ethnicity, race and gender, to both well-known Brazilian performers, such as Carmen Miranda and Sonia Braga, and lesser known domestic icons, such as the Afro-Brazilian comic actor, Grande Otelo (Big Othello), and the uberblonde children’s TV and film star, and media mogul, Xuxa. This timely addition to the National Cinemas series provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between Brazilian cinema and issues of national and cultural identity.

Download or read book Fashion written by Lars Svendsen and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashion is at once a familiar yet mysteriously elite world that we all experience, whether we’re buying a new pair of jeans, reading Vogue, or watching the latest episode of Project Runway. Lars Svendsen dives into that world in Fashion, exploring the myths, ideas, and history that make up haute couture, the must-have trends over the centuries, and the very concept of fashion itself. Fashion opens with an exploration of all the possible meanings encompassed by the word “fashion,” as Svendsen probes its elusive place in art, politics, and history. Ultimately, however, he focuses on the most common use of the term: clothing. With his trademark dry wit, he deftly dismantles many of the axioms of the industry and its supporters. For example, he points out that some of the latest fashions shown on runways aren’t actually “fashionable” in any sense of the word, arguing that they’re more akin to modern art works, and he argues against the increasingly prevalent idea that plastic surgery and body modification are part of a new wave of consumerism. Svendsen draws upon the writings of thinkers from Adam Smith to Roland Barthes to analyze fashion as both a historical phenomenon and a philosophy of aesthetics. He also traces the connections between the concepts of fashion and modernity and ultimately considers the importance of evolving fashions to such fields as art, politics, and philosophy. Whether critiquing a relentless media culture that promotes perfect bodies or parsing the never-ending debate over the merits of conformity versus individual style, Lars Svendsen offers an engaging and intriguing analysis of fashion and the motivations behind its constant pursuit of the new.
