Book excerpt: This report presents the performance of a steady-state, dual-spool, separate-exhaust turbofan engine, with an interstage turbine burner (ITB) serving as a secondary combustor. The ITB, which is located in the transition duct between the high- and the low-pressure turbines, is a relatively new concept for increasing specific thrust and lowering pollutant emissions in modern jet-engine propulsion. A detailed off-design performance analysis of ITB engines is written in Microsoft(Registered Trademark) Excel (Redmond, Washington) macrocode with Visual Basic Application to calculate engine performances over the entire operating envelope. Several design-point engine cases are pre-selected using a parametric cycle-analysis code developed previously in Microsoft(Registered Trademark) Excel, for off-design analysis. The off-design code calculates engine performances (i.e. thrust and thrust-specific-fuel-consumption) at various flight conditions and throttle settings.Liew, K. H. and Urip, E. and Yang, S. Book excerpt: A computer program titled GENENG is described. The program uses component performance maps to enable the user to do analytical steady-state engine cycle calculations. Through a scaling procedure, each of the component maps can be used to represent a family of maps (different design values of pressure ratios, efficiency, weight flow, etc. ). Either convergent or convergent divergent nozzles may be used. Included is a complete FORTRAN IV listing of the program. Sample results and input explanations are shown for one-spool and two-spool turbojets and two-spool separate and mixed-flow turbofans operating at design and off-design conditions. The computer program is available from the authors.

Book excerpt: Next generation aircraft (especially combat aircraft) will include more technology and capability than ever before. This increase in technology comes at the price of higher electrical power requirements and increased waste heat that must be removed from components to avoid overheating induced shutdowns. To help combat the resulting power and thermal management problem, a vehicle level power and thermal management design and optimization toolset was developed in MATLAB®/Simulink®.A dynamic model of a three-stream variable cycle engine was desired to add to the capabilities of the power and thermal management toolset. As an intermediate step to this goal, the dynamic mixed-flow turbofan engine model previously developed for the toolset was modified with an afterburner, a variable geometry nozzle, and a new controller to automatically control the new components. The new afterburning turbofan engine model was tested for a notional mission profile both with and without power take-off. This testing showed that the afterburning turbofan engine model and controller were successful enough to justify moving on to the development of the three-stream variable cycle engine model. The variable cycle engine model was developed using the components of the afterburning turbofan model. The compressor and turbine components were modified to use maps that incorporate the effects of variable inlet guide vane angles. The new engine model and components were sized by attempting to match data from a Numerical Propulsion System Simulation model with similar architecture. A previously developed heat exchanger model was added to the third stream duct of the new engine model. Finally, a new simplified controller was developed for the variable cycle engine model based on the controller developed for the afterburning turbofan model. The new variable cycle engine model was tested for a notional mission profile for five cases. The first case operated the engine model without power take-off and with the third stream heat exchanger removed. The second case added shaft power take-off. The third and fourth cases did away with the power take-off and added the heat exchanger to the engine model with two different hot-side mass flow rate conditions. The fifth case tested the engine with both power take-off and the third stream heat exchanger. The results were promising, showing that the variable cycle engine model had variable cycle tendencies even with a minimum of controlled variable geometry features. The controller was found to be effective, though in need of upgrades to take advantage of the benefits offered by a variable cycle engine. Additionally, it was found that both power take-off and heat rejection to the third stream impact the entire engine cycle.

Book excerpt: The book is written for engineers and students who wish to address the preliminary design of gas turbine engines, as well as the associated performance calculations, in a practical manner. A basic knowledge of thermodynamics and turbomachinery is a prerequisite for understanding the concepts and ideas described. The book is also intended for teachers as a source of information for lecture materials and exercises for their students. It is extensively illustrated with examples and data from real engine cycles, all of which can be reproduced with GasTurb (TM). It discusses the practical application of thermodynamic, aerodynamic and mechanical principles. The authors describe the theoretical background of the simulation elements and the relevant correlations through which they are applied, however they refrain from detailed scientific derivations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermarriage of the turbofan engine concept with a regenerative thermodynamic cycle is suggested as a means of improving the thrust specific fuel consumption. The primary objective of this study is to determine generalized performance characteristics of the regenerative cycle turbofan engine by (a) the derivation of the applicable thermodynamic cycle analysis, and (b) the generation of parametric design point performance. Secondary objectives include the optimization of cycle relationships to maximize performance and the quantitative evaluation of the regenerative turbofan from an aircraft mission standpoint. A thermodynamic cycle analysis has been derived for a front-fan, non-mixed exhaust turbofan engine which allows the determination of general engine performance as a function of component performance, flight conditions, and cycle design variables with and without primary stream regeneration. Parametric design point calculations have yielded both the performance characteristics of the simple and regenerative cycle turbofan engines and the comparison between them. The use of regeneration is found to offer significant improvement in turbofan TSFC at the expense of engine weight and size. Analytical means are provided for direct evaluation of the optimum cycle temperature which yields minimum TSFC. Substantial improvement in the range of a subsonic transport aircraft can be realized even up to the point where the regenerative turbofan weighs twice as much as its simple cycle counterpart. Primary stream regeneration can allow a given level of specific fuel consumption improvement to be obtained subsonically at bypass ratios lower than those that would be required by a simple cycle turbofan. Low bypass ratio would be desirable for high subsonic and supersonic operation. Hence, it is concluded that a more flexible performance improvement of the present simple cycle turbofan could well lie in a combination of increased bypass ratio and the selective use of primary stream regeneration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes a digital computer program titled SMOTE (simulation of Turbofan Engine). SMOTE is a computer program for balancing-cycle turbofan engines capable of running both design and off-design points. Component performance maps are reduced to Block Data (tabular form) to provide a base for calculating component performance. The design point is run first and map correction factors are calculated to scale the components to the desired performance. These correction factors are then applied to the component performance maps at off-design points. Initially, when the program is running at an off-design point, the cycle is not balanced, and errors (for example, work required by the compressor minus work supplied by the turbine) are generated. Small changes in engine independent variables (for example, compressor speed) then produce small changes in the errors, and these differential changes are loaded into a matrix. The matrix is then solved for the set of independent variables which results in zero errors, thus balancing the cycle. Actually, this process may be repeated several times before it reaches a balanced point because there is a non linear relationship between the independent variables and the errors. Sample results are included in the report.
