Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Sue Popkin tells the story of how an ambitious—and risky—social experiment affected the lives of the people it was ultimately intended to benefit: the residents who had suffered through the worst days of crime, decay, and rampant mismanagement of the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), and now had to face losing the only home many of them had known. The stories Popkin tells in this book offer important lessons not only for Chicago, but for the many other American cities still grappling with the legacy of racial segregation and failed federal housing policies, making this book a vital resource for city planners and managers, urban development professionals, and anti-poverty activists.
Book Synopsis Simple Solutions by : Patrick Kenji Takahashi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple Solutions: For Planet Earth is a scientific book written in a popular style for the average reader. You have read about Peak Oil and Global Climate Warming, and complained about $4/gallon gasoline, but how really serious are these headlines and annoyances? The author has worked his entire career on: the science, technology, education, administration and politics of these subjects, and crystallizes this complex field into understandable elements, providing simple solutions for humanity. Does it make sense for the renewable energy budget of the Federal Government to be about $1 billion/year when: o Annual tax incentives and government programs for the oil industry are supposedly in the range between $38 billion and $115 billion, although Lester Brown says $210 billion in 2005. o Farm subsidies alone in 2004 cost taxpayers $16.2 billion. o Our country spends $12 billion a month, or $144 billion/year, on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, ostensibly to protect oil, only to raise prices. The author’s long experience with the Greenhouse Effect has led him to believe that methane, not carbon dioxide, could well be the critical gas of concern, for there is potential for global warming to cascade into, what he terms, the Venus Syndrome. The closing chapter speculates on a hypothesis regarding mega-tsunamis (100 meter waves) from landslides. While simple solutions are suggested, the problem is the inability of our civilization to agree on a workable strategy, which is further weakened by the lack of will on part of the general populace. Thus, the reader is urged to help make that crucial difference. Instructions and examples are provided on how to attain Rainbow Vision to carry out this mission for a better Planet Earth. The simplest solution is for everyone to join in on the effort.

Download or read book Building an Entrepreneurial Organisation written by Simon Mosey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship is often focused on understanding new ventures, but the entrepreneurial flame is required in growing organisations too. This textbook examines how organisations can become more entrepreneurial to achieve sustainable growth. The authors show how entrepreneurship can be used to address crisis points of growth within small firms and to overcome the limitations of stagnation within large firms. By integrating entrepreneurship and innovation management, the book presents a framework to diagnose entrepreneurial behaviour within existing firms. Drawing upon research and reflecting practice across a range of industries, from football, through Silicon Valley, to the retail sector, it includes insights from leading practitioners. The authors build an understanding of entrepreneurship in context to provide diagnostic tools to help organisations make entrepreneurship central to their culture. This unique text is therefore useful reading for business students from advanced undergraduate to executive education.
Download or read book Through the Glass written by Helen Beede and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Glass: The Reality of Working at a For-Profit New York Nursing Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic By: Helen Beede The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on our society and exposed the disparities of our vulnerable populations. No group has been impacted as heavily as the residents of for-profit nursing homes. This first-hand account by a healthcare worker details the devastation caused by the virus once introduced into a home for the most vulnerable. What began with a few residents testing positive in the hospital quickly progressed to others in the facility developing symptoms with dozens dying and many others left with long-term health effects. There were many opportunities for management to intervene and minimize the spread. Instead, the virus was allowed to spread unchecked among residents and staff. Almost as disturbing as the illness itself is the skill with which management was able to convince the majority of the staff and public that their response was exemplary given the circumstances. The decisions made behind closed doors rarely put the wellbeing of the residents first. Lack of accountability has been a longstanding problem in for-profit nursing homes. While the residents suffer and families are left in the dark, the nursing home industry is lobbying for less liability and less regulation. The employees of this industry are overworked, understaffed and forced to choose between providing patient care, protecting themselves and defending the actions of their corporations. Without more oversight, these companies will continue to get rich by taking advantage of those who are uninformed or left with no other options.
Book Synopsis Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities by : Sten Gromark
Download or read book Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities written by Sten Gromark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities confronts urgent architectural design challenges within residential innovation, ageing communities and healthcare environments. The increasing and diversified demands on the housing market today call for alterability and adaptability in long term solutions for new integrated ways of residing. Meanwhile, an accentuated ageing society requires new residential ways of living, combining dignity, independence and appropriate care. Concurrently, profound changes in technical conditions for home healthcare require rethinking healing environments. This edited collection explores the dynamics between these integrated architectural and caring developments and intends to envision reconfigured environmental design patterns that can significantly enhance new forms of welfare and ultimately, an improved quality of life. This book identifies, presents, and articulates new qualities in designs, in caring processes, and healing atmospheres, thereby providing operational knowledge developed in close collaboration with academics, actors and stakeholders in architecture, design, and healthcare. This is an ideal read for those interested in health promotive situations of dwelling, ageing and caring.
