Book Synopsis The Structure of Turbulent Shear Flow by : A. A. R. Townsend
Download or read book The Structure of Turbulent Shear Flow written by A. A. R. Townsend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-12-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent flow is a most important branch of fluid dynamics yet its complexity has tended to make it one of the least understood. Empirical data have been appearing rapidly for more than twenty years but a consistent theory of turbulent flow based on the results has been lacking. The original edition of Dr Townsend's book was the first to attempt a systematic and comprehensive discussion of all kinds of turbulent motion and to provide a reliable analysis of the processes which occur. The theory and associated concepts are applied to the description of a variety of flows: free turbulent flows such as wakes and jets, wall flows in pipes and boundary layers, flows affected by buoyancy forces such as heat plumes and the atmospheric boundary layer and flows with curved streamlines. This monograph will appeal to practitioners and researchers in engineering, meteorology, oceanography, physics and applied mathematics. This paperback edition was first issued in hard covers in 1976 as a complete revision, taking into account developments since 1955, of the first edition. It will be useful as an advanced text in applied mathematics, and the other disciplines mentioned above.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having worked on problems of three-dimensional boundary-layer flow for more than a decade, the authors decided to publish some of their results and ideas as a book. They believe this is worthwhile to do in spite of the availability of other books on boundary-layer theory. These books have their emphasis mainly on two-dimensional flow, on the modeling of turbulent flow, or on prediction techniques. The present book, on the other hand, is dedicated to the descrip tion of three-dimensional shear flow past realistic configurations and to the provision of formulations for prediction methods. To this end several sets of governing equations for the treatment of high-Reynolds number viscous flows are being discussed, together with approximations of the geometry of general configurations. Thus the book, which gives a uniform representation of the for mulation of the many problems, and not so much a review of the work done so far at different places, is aimed at the perspective in vestigator of three-dimensional viscous-flow problems. The reader should not allow himself to ~e scared off'by the use of tensorial concepts and of the index notation, both not too familiar in classic fluid mechanics. The authors made the experience that the use of these concepts alleviates much the work on realistic flow problems. In the book they have emphasized the use of these concepts and not their mathematical proofs.

This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from fundamentals of classical stability theory, an overview is given of the transition phenomena in subsonic, wall-bounded shear flows. At first, the consideration focuses on elementary small-amplitude velocity perturbations of laminar shear layers, i.e. instability waves, in the simplest canonical configurations of a plane channel flow and a flat-plate boundary layer. Then the linear stability problem is expanded to include the effects of pressure gradients, flow curvature, boundary-layer separation, wall compliance, etc. related to applications. Beyond the amplification of instability waves is the non-modal growth of local stationary and non-stationary shear flow perturbations which are discussed as well. The volume continues with the key aspect of the transition process, that is, receptivity of convectively unstable shear layers to external perturbations, summarizing main paths of the excitation of laminar flow disturbances. The remainder of the book addresses the instability phenomena found at late stages of transition. These include secondary instabilities and nonlinear features of boundary-layer perturbations that lead to the final breakdown to turbulence. Thus, the reader is provided with a step-by-step approach that covers the milestones and recent advances in the laminar-turbulent transition. Special aspects of instability and transition are discussed through the book and are intended for research scientists, while the main target of the book is the student in the fundamentals of fluid mechanics. Computational guides, recommended exercises, and PowerPoint multimedia notes based on results of real scientific experiments supplement the monograph. These are especially helpful for the neophyte to obtain a solid foundation in hydrodynamic stability.
