Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Gospel Themes These sermons were preached by Pres. Finney at Oberlin during the years 1845 - 1861, and reported from his lips by myself. In taking these reports I aimed to give the heads of the sermons and all the important statements verbatim, to retain always the substance Of thought, and especially to seize upon the illustrations and present their essential points. Taken down in a species Of short-hand, they were subsequently written out, and in every case read to Pres. Finney in his study for any corrections he might desire, and for his endorse ment. Consequently these reports present truthfully the great doctrines preached, and in good measure it is believed the method and manner Of his preaching. Book excerpt: There are 8 key attitude and action shifts that every great leader makes. From entitlement to honor. From passive to passionate. From unreliable to consistent. Are you willing to make these shifts (and more) and be ready when the “next up” call comes? The Millennial generation is poised to do something. We can either learn, grow, ask for help, and lead honorably into the future, or we can passively wait, feeling entitled for the keys to eventually be given to us. We can do better than that! Let’s take the initiative and rise to the challenge. The future will be filled with leadership transitions at not only the highest levels in businesses, churches, and organizations all over the world, but also at regular, everyday places. Who will be ready to lead existing movements, groups, and causes? Or who will be ready to start the new ones? Using practical, biblical, and contemporary examples and lessons, this book will help existing and burgeoning leaders pinpoint the areas of their lives where they still need to make the shift and learn to lead more effectively.

Book excerpt: I was surprised and honored to receive an invitation to publish a collection of sermons. In assembling this collection of sermons, I realized a lot of my sermons have the same basic theme. Don't be afraid - bloom where you're planted - you've got this. I want to encourage listeners, not simply so they will feel better, but so they will find their way to active participation in God's good works. Many of my preaching mentors encouraged me to "keep it simple." Bill Neely and Wanda Neely encouraged me to preach without notes, a method which makes the preacher keep to just a few key points. Kermit Dancy told me all sermon topics could be counted on one hand: God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, sin/forgiveness, and the church. David Bartlett challenged everyone in his preaching class to make sure there is Good News in each sermon. Steve Hayner asked me to look for what Christ is doing in the world, and to follow with words and actions. So many women mentors have encouraged me and bolstered my resolve during almost twenty years of ordained ministry. I am thankful beyond words for Cherrie Henry, Carter Shelley, Susan Fricks, Carol Gregg, Susan Dunlap, and Wanda Neely, among many others. In these times in which many of us feel stretched thin and stressed out, I hope the message of these sermons will provide encouragement to keep on going. Don't be afraid - bloom where you're planted - you've got this. God has called us to good work. May we respond to that call in faith, love, and hope.

Book excerpt: Sometimes in our zeal to proclaim God's message of truth and redemption, we overcomplicate it. As pastors, we sometimes believe that the greatest message is delivered in carefully planned sermons, with every nuance explained and every chapter and verse deconstructed. But what if we let the stories of Jesus speak for themselves? Author and storyteller John B. Jamison asked himself this question, and it didn't take long for him to discover that when he simply stepped back and got out of the way, his preaching began to change. In "Simple Faith?," Jamison takes us through Jesus' journey to the cross, but rather than following the traditional sermon structure, he invites us to pull up a chair and listen, to imagine with him those days when Jesus walked the earth and ushered in the kingdom of heaven. As Jamison seeks to revive the imaginations of congregations, he encourages pastors to use this resource as a tool for inspiration. The seventeen Lent/Easter, Cycle B, sermons included in this book, Jamison believes, hold powerful plots and themes that will transform in today's world as boldly as they did in ancient days. Jamison's humble approach to storytelling makes this an accessible resource to not only pastors, but also to those seeking group studies, private devotionals, and a renewed understanding of the gospel text. A few of the chapter titles included in this book are: Some Greeks (John 12:20-33) Where It Ends (John 13:1-17, 31b-35) Tangled Up in the Vines (John 15:1-8) John B. Jamisonspent twenty plus years as a full-time pastor of United Methodist congregations in Illinois. Jamison still maintains his connection to the church by serving as an interim pastor for Presbyterian congregations. The author of"Time's Up!"(CSS) and a section of "Sermons on the Second Readings, Series II, Cycle C," Jamison has also participated in the United Methodist Academy for Preaching, and he has created a variety of print, television, and radio material.Jamison is currently CEO of ImagiLearning, Inc. He is married and has one grown child and his hobbies include painting, bonsai, writing, gardening, playing guitar, and traveling.
