Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Poems of Everyday Life The brute's mad struggles toward the divine, His savage passions melted in Love's fire. Chained to the earth with links thou canst not break, Yet with a ceaseless longing for the sky, Within thy heart an ever haunting ache, The knowledge that to live means but to die. Yet when my heart would fail, seeing life's woe, And my soul sickens at its grief and pain, Some wondrous act of thine, with love aglow, Lights up the world and life is good again. Then I could weep with bliss, with rapture wild, Content to know but this - I am thy child! Hat care we, friend of mine, our creeds are not the same, What if we differ in a creed? 'tis only in a name. We go the self same road, have the same goal in sight, Let's call it by a broader name, 'dhe Highway of the Right. You take a beaten path that has been trod before, I seek a newer pathway out; they reach the selfsame door. And when some lightning ash shows us how near we stand, We cling together in the storm and clasp each other's hand. Still we must journey on, though often sore beset, Our feet with cruel thorns are torn, our eyes with tears are wet. It is the light of Love that shows us how to come, And whether it be fast or slow, it surely leads us home. Who enters first the gate, beholds the waiting door, Will weep until the other come, to press the thorns no more. Had come to the parting of the ways, And I said, Which road shall I take? At the entrance of one stood Happiness, From the other Duty spake. The two stood waiting for me to decide, Happiness laughing and bold, But Duty's voice was sad and low, And his look was stern and cold. I knew that my fate hung on my choice, I said, Let my soul command; When Happiness quickly turned away, But Duty grasped my hand. I walked with him for many a mile, Over the thorns and stones, But Duty gave me never a smile, And spoke in commanding tones. At last we came to a mountain side, I was weary and begged to stop, But Duty firmly held my hand And led me straight to the top. Book excerpt: My poetry is first and foremost about everyday life. About trying to heal each other with love and communication. When I say communication I mean saying hi to each other, looking past race, religion and how a person looks. Let us go back to the basics of life. God is very important to me in my daily life, so I pray for each and every person in the world whether they are good or bad. In parting I always say one day at a time. Enjoy my simple poems and smile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of encounters. Part memoir, part essay, and partly a guide to maximizing your capacity for fulfillment and expression, The Poetry of Everyday Life taps into the artistic side of what we often take for granted: the stories we tell, the people we love, the metaphors used by scientists, even our sex lives. A folklorist, writer, and cultural activist, Steve Zeitlin explores how poems serve us in daily life and how they are used in times of personal and national crisis. In the first book to bring together the perspectives of folklore and creative writing, Zeitlin explores meaning and experience, covering topics ranging from poetry in the life cycle to the contemporary uses of ancient myths."This convergence of poetry and folklore," he suggests, "gives birth to something new: a new way of seeing ourselves, and a new way of being in the world." Written with humor and insight, the book introduces readers to the many eccentric and visionary characters Zeitlin has met in his career as a folklorist. Covering topics from Ping-Pong to cave paintings, from family poetry nights to delectable dishes at his favorite ethnic restaurants, The Poetry of Everyday Life will inspire readers to expand their consciousness of the beauty that resides in everyday things and to use creative expression to engage and animate that beauty toward living a more fulfilling awakened life, full of laughter. To live a creative life is the best way to engage with the beauty of the everyday.Visit the author's website for The Poetry of Everyday Life at http://citylore.org/the-poetry-of-everyday-life/.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's easy to make one, lying on your back in the newest snow. You move your arms like wings. Later you forget about your creation, go inside for a mug of hot chocolate. That's when she rises from the snow takes a feathery breath, tries out her wings. So begins a poem about making a snow angel, but it might also refer to the mysterious way that a poem comes into being and takes on a life of its own. In this new collection, Ralph Fletcher shows us how you can write a poem about almost anything: a baby sister, a Venus's-flytrap, a failing grandmother, a squished squirrel, grammar homework, and more. These poems take us inside the creative process as they reveal both the playfulness and the power of poetry. More than anything, they invite us to pick up pen and paper and write some poems of your own.

The premise of this book is that part of the pleasure of life-contentment that we can cultivate no matter how much or how little we have-comes from the conscious appreciation of the beauty and the significance of everyday things. Through photographs and poems, the author takes you on a voyage of discovery through the world around you. You are shown, sometimes playfully and sometimes profoundly, that even the simplest of things-a shirt and tie, a kitchen colander, a closed door, or a blue butterfly-can have a shining beauty, secret story, and surprising meaning. Along the way, you are gently reminded that such objects deserve to be "warmed with much handling" and gazed upon with pleasure and gratitude as the tiny treasures they are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry has long been thought of as a genre devoted to grand subjects, timeless themes, and sublime beauty. Why, then, have contemporary poets turned with such intensity to documenting and capturing the everyday and mundane? Drawing on insights about the nature of everyday life from philosophy, history, and critical theory, Andrew Epstein traces the modern history of this preoccupation and considers why it is so much with us today. Attention Equals Life argues that a potent hunger for everyday life explodes in the post-1945 period as a reaction to the rapid, unsettling transformations of this epoch, which have resulted in a culture of perilous distraction. Epstein demonstrates that poetry is an important, and perhaps unlikely, cultural form that has mounted a response, and even a mode of resistance, to a culture suffering from an acute crisis of attention. In this timely and engaging study, Epstein examines why a compulsion to represent the everyday becomes predominant in the decades after modernism and why it has so often sparked genre-bending formal experimentation. With chapters devoted to illuminating readings of a diverse group of writers--including poets associated with influential movements like the New York School, language poetry, and conceptual writing--the book considers the variety of forms contemporary poetry of everyday life has taken, and analyzes how gender, race, and political forces all profoundly inflect the experience and the representation of the quotidian. By exploring the rise of experimental realism as a poetic mode and the turn to rule-governed "everyday-life projects," Attention Equals Life offers a new way of understanding a vital strain at the heart of twentieth- and twenty-first century literature. It not only charts the evolution of a significant concept in cultural theory and poetry, but also reminds readers that the quest to pay attention to the everyday within today's frenetic world of and social media is an urgent and unending task.
