Experiment l. - Dissolve a pinch of common salt in a test-tube one-third full of water. The solution tastes salty and will continue to taste so even if very much diluted. In another test-tube make a solution of silver nitrate by dissolving a crystal of silver nitrate in a test -tube one third full of water. To a little of the salt solution add a drop or two of the silver nitrate solution. A white precipitate of silver chloride will be produced. Take some more of the salt solution and dilute it very much. Add silver nitrate. This silver nitrate may evidently be used as a test for salt in solution. Dilute the salt solution so much that you have only a drop or two of it to a test-tube full of water. Add silver nitrate. The white silver chloride still appears. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Experiments for Science Teaching: Including Two Hundred Experiments Fully Illustrating the Elementary Physics and Chemistry Division in the Evening School Continuation Code This is essentially a book of experiments. Most of them are very simple, and can easily be performed by those who have never tried an experiment in their lives. NO expensive apparatus is employed in this course of experiments. All the contrivances can be made from the homeliest things, such as tumblers, saucers, basins, and pans employed for ordinary household purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Annotated List of Experiments in Physics: Suitable for a College Course The original edition of this book was printed in 1906 on the press of the University of Cincinnati. It is not intended to be a course in Experimental Physics, but, as its title implies, an annotated list of some three hundred experiments, any one of which might be profitably performed by a sophomore student in college. As a rule no attempt has been made to describe the experiment, but a reference has been given to a full description of it in a standard manual or text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Physics This book is the result of an experience of nearly ten years in teaching Experimental Physics to classes consist ing of students who were preparing for college and of students who were not preparing for college. Most of the experiments are quantitative, some are qualitative. Qualitative experiments serve to stimulate the interest of the student, and to prepare his mind for a better understanding of quantitative experiments. A beginner in Physics should know something about that which he'is expected to measure before he attempts to measure it. This knowledge is readily acquired from qualitative experiments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physics, Largely Experimental: On the Basis of the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Physical Experiments" IN the year 1886 Harvard College made a very impor tant change touching the physics in its requirements for admission. For many years candidates for the Fresh man class had been examined in physics, but in text-book physics only. It was now decided to establish a require ment of laboratory work to be recommended by the College in place of the text-book work, although the latter, con siderably increased, remained as an alternative for those who could not command laboratory facilities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physics by Experiment: An Elementary Text-Book for the Use of Schools Scope. - This book is elementary in its character. The author concludes from his own experience, and from that of a great number of teachers with whom he has consulted, that, as a rule, text-books upon Physics are too difficult for beginners. Not until the average student has gained by experiments a knowledge of the elementary facts and laws of Physics, and acquired thereby a firm basis on which to build, is he able to take up the more abstract treatment of the subject. The author believes, as the result of his experience in the class-room, that the amount given in this book, and the method of acquiring it, will be found the shortest, the easiest, and the surest preparation to the study of advanced Physics. Book excerpt: This is one of enumerable self-help or how to books with an emphasis on Engineering Physics Practical. The basic premise of the book is that there are certain simple experiments, involving no more than rudimentary Physics laws and the very basic laws of Engineering Physics for undergraduate college engineering students. But these practical are often not done or taken lightly, for several reasons. First, people don’t realize how easy they are to do. Second, and more fundamental, they are not done because it does not occur to people to do them. Finally, and tragically, no one in their elementary, middle, or high school educational experience has stressed the importance of doing them, and of course neither did they teach to do them. This book is to reveal to you what the experiments are, make them readily understandable, and by means of a very easy-to-use illustrations. The main thing you should expect from this book is the theories and practical related small information more precisely about experiments. You will get a rudimentary understanding of the basic concepts behind the Engineering Physics experiment that governs the fundamental daily life questions that challenge us in life. The book is divided into seven major categories and Fifteen chapters. In this book the students will find solutions to experimental obstacles normally faced by undergraduate college engineering students. students. In summary, you don’t need any special background or ability to profit from this book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Annotated List of Experiments in Physics Used at the University of Cincinnati in the Courses in Experimental Physics Designed for Sophomore Students of the Academic and Engineering Colleges This is not intended to be a course in Experimental Physics, but, as its title implies, merely an annotated list of some 270 experiments, any one of which might be profitably performed by a sophomore student in college. As a rule no attempt has been made to describe the experiment, but a reference has been given to a full description of it in a standard manual or text book. In the references, for the sake of brevity, the name of the author has been given without the title of the work. Below, therefore, is a list of the books referred to with their publishers: Ames and Bliss, Experiments in Physics, Harper Brothers, 1898. Barker, Physics, second edition, Henry Holt Co. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy Experiments in Physical Science: For Oral Instruction in Common Schools It is coming to be very generally believed by educators that one of the most important aims of primary instruction should be to discipline the child to habits of quick and accurate observation, and to the power of making simple but correct inferences from the facts which his senses reveal. Surely this result can be reached more easily by means of those facts which nature communicates through the senses than by subjects which have no natural dependence upon material forms; and hence the superior adaptation of the simple facts of physical science to the wants of common-school instruction. But the only way to strengthen mind is to make it work. If the senses arc to be developed and disciplined, the child must he allowed, and, if need be, compelled, to use its senses for himself. The teacher is to guide him, but not to carry him. His mind is to he directed toward material things, and taught to see their forms and characters as they themselves present them. The instructor is to be his guide, but Nature is herself to be his teacher. The intelligent teachers of common-schools are eagerly asking how can this theory he wrought into practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Experiments: A Manual and Note Book Containing the Laboratory Exercises Required for Admission to Harvard University, and Many Other Exercises, and Adapted to Accompany Any Text Book on Physics There are obvious advantages in having the entire history of an experiment, including details of the manipulations, the data and results obtained, question and answer, suggestion and deduction, in immediate conjunction and included between the same covers. Especially is this the case in schools where (as in Boston) the laboratory manuals are retained by the pupil at the end of his course, while the text-books in science remain the property of the city.
