Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the procedures described in the PEAK-E curriculum in teaching addition skills to children with developmental disabilities. In the present study, three participants were taught to match sample addition problems (A) to a number of pictures (B) corresponding to the sum of A (A-B), and to match sample pictures (B) to textual numbers (C) (B-C). They were then tested to see if they could match sample addition problems (A) to with the textual numbers (C) that were the solution of the addition problems A (A-C). Following mastery of the A-B and B-C relations, none of the participants were able to demonstrate the derived transitive A-C relation. An additional training phase was conducted across all participants whereby two of the five stimulus classes were provided “equivalence” C-A training (matching the textual number C to the equation A), after which all of the participants were able to demonstrate the derived transitive A-C relations across all stimulus classes without direct training of any of the stimulus classes. The results expand on previous research evaluating behavioral approaches to teaching math skills by showing how the development of equivalence class can result in the untrained emergence of novel math skills.

Book excerpt: The current series of experiments investigated the formation of equivalence classes with young children in classroom settings. Nine visual stimuli were divided into three groups (A, B, and C) each containing three stimuli (A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3). All participants were pretested on all possible stimulus-stimulus relations. Then conditional discrimination training was used to teach a few stimulus-stimulus relations (i.e., the AB and AC relations). Following training, participants were posttested on all stimulus-stimulus relations to determine if untrained relations emerged indicating the formation of equivalence classes. Experiment 1 demonstrated the emergence of stimulus-stimulus relations consistent with stimulus equivalence among stimuli from the third-grade science curriculum of a boy with autism. Experiment 2 was a systematic replication of Experiment 1 with six third-graders. Finally, Experiment 3 replicated the findings of Experiment 2 with kindergarten students. Results indicated the emergence of match-to-sample performances, suggesting that these methods could be applied both as an efficient primary teaching technique and as a remediation technique for young children in the classroom setting.

Book excerpt: Stimulus equivalence is a teaching paradigm with empirical evidence for the establishment of a variety of skills (i.e., letter and number recognition, sight word reading, face-name recognition, etc.) in typically developing and non-typically developing children and adults with different levels of functioning. Simple and complex conditional discrimination training have both been demonstrated to be effective. However, the effectiveness of the two procedures has not been directly compared. The present study investigated the relative effectiveness of these two procedures to establish sight word reading and rudimentary reading comprehension to one typically developing children and two children with autism. An adapted alternating treatments design was implemented, whereby stimulus sets were assigned to either a simple-sample or complex-sample condition. The percentage of correct responses was scored for each training condition, and the number of trial blocks required to reach criterion was compared to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the two conditions. Generalization probes were conducted for all three participants, and maintenance probes were conducted two weeks following the end of training for two of the three participants. Results indicate that complex sample training was more efficient than simple sample training with all three participants. Also, all participants scored higher on their post-training probes compared to their pre-training probes in both conditions which demonstrates utility of stimulus equivalence.
