Book excerpt: Combinatorial mathematicians and statisticians have made a wide range of contributions to the development of block designs, and this book brings together much of that work. The designs developed for a specific problem are used in a variety of different settings. Applications include controlled sampling, randomized response, validation and valuation studies, intercropping experiments, brand cross-effect designs, lotto and tournaments. The intra- and inter- block, nonparametric and covariance analysis are discussed for general block designs, and the concepts of connectedness, orthogonality, and all types of balances in designs are carefully summarized. Readers are also introduced to the designs currently playing a prominent role in the field: alpha designs, trend-free designs, balanced treatment-control designs, nearest neighbor designs, and nested designs. This book provides the important background results required by researchers in block designs and related areas and prepares them for more complex research on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and introduction of new experimental designs in the last fifty years has been quite staggering, brought about largely by an ever-widening field of applications. Design and Analysis of Experiments, Volume 2: Advanced Experimental Design is the second of a two-volume body of work that builds upon the philosophical foundations of experimental design set forth by Oscar Kempthorne half a century ago and updates it with the latest developments in the field. Designed for advanced-level graduate students and industry professionals, this text includes coverage of incomplete block and row-column designs; symmetrical, asymmetrical, and fractional factorial designs; main effect plans and their construction; supersaturated designs; robust design, or Taguchi experiments; lattice designs; and cross-over designs.

Book excerpt: Intercropping is an area of research for which there is a desperate need, both in developing countries where people are rapidly depleting scarce resources and still starving, and in developed countries, where more ecologically and economically sound ways of feeding ourselves must be developed. The only published guidelines for conducting such research and analyzing the data have been scattered about in various journal articles, many of which are hard to find. This book condenses these methods and will be immensely valuable to agricultural researchers and to the statisticians who help them design their experiments and interpret their results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical reference on the latest sensory and consumer evaluation techniques available to professionals and academics working in food and consumer goods product development and marketing This unique manual describes how to implement specific sensory and consumer methods based on context and objective. Presented in a direct and straightforward language that will speak to the industry professionals and academics who are on the ground attempting to solve technical questions, it reviews, step by step, the various stages of a product evaluation. Included are practical examples from many industries that practitioners can relate to. The book also shows how to build a sustainable short-, medium-, and long-term product evaluation strategy, and guides readers on how to create customized methods, or even completely new approaches. Consumer and Sensory Evaluation Techniques speaks to management and decision-makers within organizations and addresses the main questions (eg: "How much will it cost?" and "How quickly can it be achieved?") that are faced when developing and testing new products before a launch. Chapters cover: the pillars of good consumer and sensory studies; sensory profile of a product: mapping internal sensory properties; the foundations of consumer evaluation; study plans and strategy—sustainable short, mid and long-term vision; real-life anticipation with market factors: concept, price, brand, market channel; and internal studies versus sub-contracting. Uses examples from multiple sectors to show how to build a sustainable product evaluation strategy Analyses the critical milestones to follow and the pitfalls to avoid Supports the decision-making process while developing fast yet robust test strategies that will increase the likelihood of a product's success Consumer and Sensory Evaluation Techniques is the perfect resource for students, faculty and professionals working in product development, including formulators and marketers.

All major aspects of incomplete block designs are considered by consolidating vast amounts of material from the literature including the classical incomplete block designs, like the balanced incomplete block (BIB) and partially balanced incomplete block (PBIB) designs. Other developments like efficiency-balanced designs, nested designs, robust designs, C-designs and alpha designs are also discussed, along with more recent developments in incomplete block designs for special types of experiments, like biological assays, test-control experiments and diallel crosses, which are generally not covered in existing books. Results on the optimality aspects of various incomplete block designs are reviewed in a separate chapter, that also includes recent optimality results for test-control comparisons, parallel-line assays and diallel cross experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factorial designs were introduced and popularized by Fisher (1935). Among the early authors, Yates (1937) considered both symmetric and asymmetric factorial designs. Bose and Kishen (1940) and Bose (1947) developed a mathematical theory for symmetric priIi't&-powered factorials while Nair and Roo (1941, 1942, 1948) introduced and explored balanced confounded designs for the asymmetric case. Since then, over the last four decades, there has been a rapid growth of research in factorial designs and a considerable interest is still continuing. Kurkjian and Zelen (1962, 1963) introduced a tensor calculus for factorial arrangements which, as pointed out by Federer (1980), represents a powerful statistical analytic tool in the context of factorial designs. Kurkjian and Zelen (1963) gave the analysis of block designs using the calculus and Zelen and Federer (1964) applied it to the analysis of designs with two-way elimination of heterogeneity. Zelen and Federer (1965) used the calculus for the analysis of designs having several classifications with unequal replications, no empty cells and with all the interactions present. Federer and Zelen (1966) considered applications of the calculus for factorial experiments when the treatments are not all equally replicated, and Paik and Federer (1974) provided extensions to when some of the treatment combinations are not included in the experiment. The calculus, which involves the use of Kronecker products of matrices, is extremely helpful in deriving characterizations, in a compact form, for various important features like balance and orthogonality in a general multifactor setting.
