Book excerpt: Stewartson's transformation is applied to the laminar compressible boundary-layer equations and the requirement of similarity is introduced, resulting in a set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations previously quoted by Stewartson, but unsolved. The requirements of the system are Prandtl number of 1.0, linear viscosity-temperature relation across the boundary layer, an isothermal surface, and the particular distributions of free-stream velocity consistent with similar solutions. This system admits axial pressure gradients of arbitrary magnitude, heat flux normal to the surface, and arbitrary Mach numbers. The system of differential equations is transformed to integral system, with the velocity ratio as the independent variable. For this system, solutions are found by digital computation for pressure gradients varying from that causing separation to the infinitely favorable gradient and for wall temperatures from absolute zero to twice the free-stream stagnation temperature. Some solutions for separated flows are also presented.

Similar velocity and temperature profiles and global quantities such as displacement thickness, momentum thickness, form factor, etc., are presented for 116 pressure gradient-heat transfer combinations. Surface temperatures for these cases range from absolute zero (S(0) = - 1) to twice the free stream stagnation temperature (S(0) = + 1), while the streamwise pressure gradient varies from values corresponding to maximum reversed flow (beta=-0.36) to those of extremely accelerated flows (beta = 20). Results are presented at regular intervals of the parameters S(0) and beta, allowing for straight-forward comparisons between cases. Five decimal place accuracy is maintained for all results. The effects of transpiration cooling, Prandtl number, pressure gradient, wall temperature, and viscosity relation were investigated. It is shown that as the Mach number is increased for a given large yaw angle the effects of pressure gradient become larger and the quantity of coolant required to maintain a given wall temperature is also increased. The use of a linear viscosity-temperature relation gives approximately the same results as the Sutherland viscosity-temperature relation except for very high aerodynamic heating rates.

Book excerpt: The major thrust of this book is to present a technique of analysis that aids the formulation, understanding, and solution of problems of viscous flow. The intent is to avoid providing a "canned" program to solve a problem, offering instead a way to recognize the underlying physical, mathematical, and modeling concepts inherent in the solutions. The reader must first choose a mathematical model and derive governing equations based on realistic assumptions, or become aware of the limitations and assumptions associated with existing models. An appropriate solution technique is then selected. The solution technique may be either analytical or numerical. Computer-aided analysis algorithms supplement the classical analyses. The book begins by deriving the Navier-Stokes equation for a viscous compressible variable property fluid. The second chapter considers exact solutions of the incompressible hydrodynamic boundary layer equations solved with and without mass transfer at the wall. Forced convection, free convection, and the compressible laminar boundary layer are discussed in the remaining chapters. The text unifies the various topics by tracing a logical progression from simple to complex governing differential equations and boundary conditions. Numerical, parametric, and directed analysis problems are included at the end of each chapter.

The method allows arbitrary conditions for all of the following: pressure gradient, surface temperature and its gradient, heat transfer, mass transfer, and fluid properties. It can handle flows in which equilibrium dissociation occurs. Also, the second-order effect of transverse curvature is retained. The only restrictions are geometric. The method of solution consists of replacing the partial derivatives with respect to the flow direction by finite differences, while retaining the derivatives in a direction normal to the boundary. Arbitrary fluid properties may be used in the method of solution, if they are inputs in the computer program in the form of formulas or tables. The method has been programmed on an IBM 7094 computer, and solutions for a variety of flows are presented. Comparisons are made with other exact and approximate methods and with experiment. Calculations and comparisons establish that the method is rapid, highly accurate, and powerful. (Author).
