This book was released on 2005 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group selection and irregular group shelterwood silvicultural systems are being tested as options to conserve woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) habitat. If successful, the systems will be applied within the very dry, cold Sub-Boreal Pine-Spruce (SBPSxc) and very dry, very cold Montane Spruce (MSxv) biogeoclimatic subzones, located on the high-elevation Chilcotin Plateau of west-central British Columbia. In these harsh growing environments, partial cutting strongly influences the microclimate in terms of air and soil temperature, frost events, and snow-free dates. To examine the magnitude of this influence, three pairs of climate stations were set up in partial cuts and clearcuts, across a range of elevations, to compare microclimate conditions. The study also compared north edge, centre, and south edge microsites within one 30-m opening on each of three partial cuts.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to: 1. compare the key environmental variables between blocks (elevational effect) and treatments (clearcut and irregular group shelterwood with whole-tree harvesting partial cut), and between microsites within partial cut openings (north and south edges and centre); and 2. examine temporal changes occurring to environmental variables in the context of the changing biological environment. This document includes an introduction, methods, results and discussion, and a summary.--Includes text from document.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mount Tom adaptive management trial was initiated in 1999 on 4067 hectares in mountain caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) winter habitat in east-central British Columbia. It builds on and expands knowledge gained from the Quesnel Highland Alternative Silvicultural Systems trial, set up further to the south in 1990, to explore options to maintain caribou habitat while allowing for some forest harvesting. The principal objective of the Mount Tom adaptive management trial is to examine the effects of applying partial cutting, in a range of ecological and geographical contexts, at the operational level. The purpose of this establishment report is to document the study area, layout, and methods associated with the many studies embedded in this long-term, complex trial. Specifically, this report describes studies designed to measure the response of arboreal lichens to partial cutting; describe the pre-harvest stand structure and monitor the post-harvest stand development; measure the treefall rates on opening edges and within the residual forest; measure the response of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir regeneration in a range of opening sizes, ecotypes, site preparation and microsite planting options; monitor the vegetation development in openings; determine the effects of the group selection treatment on snow accumulation and snow ablation rates; and monitor the microclimate. This report also describes the harvesting operations and extension opportunities in the trial.--Document.
Book Synopsis Natural Regeneration in Partial Cuts and Mature Forests After Mountain Pine Beetle Infestation in the West Chilcotin by : Nola Marie Daintith

This book was released on 2015 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Itcha-Ilgachuz Research Project was initiated in the west Chilcotin region of central British Columbia to test variants of group selection and irregular group shelterwood silvicultural systems for managing lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forests for timber and northern caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou Gmelin, northern ecotype) winter habitat. The results presented in this report are from three assessments that have been completed since the start of the mountain pine beetle outbreak, and are provided in context with the results from the earlier natural regeneration study. The results provide insight into how successfully the study sites and surrounding forests, which have sustained variable levels of mortality, regenerate naturally.--Includes text from document.
Book Synopsis Mountain Pine Beetle by : Fred L. Bunnell
Download or read book Mountain Pine Beetle written by Fred L. Bunnell and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides a synthesis of recently completed studies to assess the ecological consequences of forest management after attack by mountain pine beetle or other large-scale disturbances. Studies are assessed for their contributions to gaps in knowledge previously identified in the Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative Working Paper "Evaluating effects of large scale salvage logging for mountain pine beetle on terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates," which was published in 2004. This report focuses on studies developed through the federal Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative, the federal Mountain Pine Beetle Program, and the complementary BC Forest Science Program. Relevant information from other jurisdictions is sometimes included to augment those studies. Topics examined are: the impacts of beetle kill and salvage operations on habitat attributes; the impacts of beetle kill and salvage operations on attendant processes, such as snag fall rates, light interception, and snow accumulation; and the wildlife response to large-scale beetle outbreaks and management strategies. For each of these three topics, we provide a summary of: research to date; pertinent findings to date; and gaps in research.

Book Synopsis Stand-tending and Rehabilitation Treatment Options for 36-year-old, Height-repressed Lodgepole Pine by : Teresa A. Newsome
Download or read book Stand-tending and Rehabilitation Treatment Options for 36-year-old, Height-repressed Lodgepole Pine written by Teresa A. Newsome and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest fires facilitate natural regeneration in lodgepole pine, but the pine stands that regenerate after wildfires are often very dense, which usually limits height growth. Such stands are said to be height repressed. One option for treating such stands to reduce or reverse height repression is to use silviculture treatments. This report presents preliminary (third-year) findings of a trial that is testing stand-tending & rehabilitation treatments in a 36-year-old, height-repressed lodgepole pine stand in southern interior British Columbia. The objective of the trial is to determine what regime might provide the most cost-effective means of increasing timber productivity. Treatments tested include fertilization, thinning, thinning followed by fertilization, and replacement of the existing stand.
