Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, as much of the world adopted some variant of the gold standard, China remained the most populous country still using silver. Yet China had no unified national currency; there was not one monetary standard but many. Silver coins circulated alongside chunks of silver and every transaction became an "encounter of wits." China and the End of Global Silver, 1873–1937 focuses on how officials, policy makers, bankers, merchants, academics, and journalists in China and around the world answered a simple question: how should China change its monetary system? Far from a narrow, technical issue, Chinese monetary reform is a dramatic story full of political revolutions, economic depressions, chance, and contingency. As different governments in China attempted to create a unified monetary standard in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the United States, England, and Japan tried to shape the direction of Chinese monetary reform for their own benefit. Austin Dean argues convincingly that the Silver Era in world history ended owing to the interaction of imperial competition in East Asia and the state-building projects of different governments in China. When the Nationalist government of China went off the silver standard in 1935, it marked a key moment not just in Chinese history but in world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the story of silver's transformation from soft money during the nineteenth century to hard asset today, and how manipulations of the white metal by American president Franklin D. Roosevelt during the 1930s and by the richest man in the world, Texas oil baron Nelson Bunker Hunt, during the 1970s altered the course of American and world history. FDR pumped up the price of silver to help jump start the U.S. economy during the Great Depression, but this move weakened China, which was then on the silver standard, and facilitated Japan's rise to power before World War II. Bunker Hunt went on a silver-buying spree during the 1970s to protect himself against inflation and triggered a financial crisis that left him bankrupt. Silver has been the preferred shelter against government defaults, political instability, and inflation for most people in the world because it is cheaper than gold. The white metal has been the place to hide when conventional investments sour, but it has also seduced sophisticated investors throughout the ages like a siren. This book explains how powerful figures, up to and including Warren Buffett, have come under silver's thrall, and how its history guides economic and political decisions in the twenty-first century"--Publisher's description

Book excerpt: Softcover book - The latest incarnation of Brother Can You Spare A Dime? - Modern Dime Size Silver Coins of the World with Footnotes to History has been published in a Third Edition. This work, a many year project to study these coins as miniature engravings of Art and History, was first published in 1997. Several years later a CD-rom was produced as the Second Edition. The author won a Numismatic Literary Guild Award for this Edition. The Third Edition, a 600 page book with over a thousand enlarged scans of the coins from the mid 1800's to 1970 show coins from around the world - Afghanistan to Yemen. These coins were the money of the people at the time; one would represent a days work, purchase a meal or a night's entertainment. Kings, Queens and Statesmen are portrayed on dozens, with little biographies of many. More than a numismatic book, this anthology is a fine way to develop a better understanding of money in use during the previous two centuries. A great addition to your numismatic library.

Yes, it's the Kennedys, here called the McCormacks, and, yes, it's the sixties, here called the seventies. An alternate universe like ours, but not. This president, aglow with Hollywood glamour, gets to live out two terms. His kid brother, the hard-edged one, gets a term of his own. The funhouse distortions continue. The Vietnam War, once popular and eagerly boosted by the brothers, is so out of favor it's threatening their survival. Now a once-loyal Pentagon analyst can prove the McCormacks have been lying about the war from the beginning, and the analyst is about to go public. (Remember Daniel Ellsberg?) The younger McCormack commissions a hit. He wants the analyst dead. The heft of the novel is the changing dynamic as killer and victim draw closer, and it's gripping, even in a time when people under 50 seem to think of Vietnam mainly as a tourist destination. When the expected violence happens, it's unusually moving because we've come to know both men well...

Book excerpt: A thousand-year history of how China’s obsession with silver influenced the country’s financial well-being, global standing, and political stability This revelatory account of the ways silver shaped Chinese history shows how an obsession with “white metal” held China back from financial modernization. First used as currency during the Song dynasty in around 900 CE, silver gradually became central to China’s economic framework and was officially monetized in the middle of the Ming dynasty during the sixteenth century. However, due to the early adoption of paper money in China, silver was not formed into coins but became a cumbersome “weighing currency,” for which ingots had to be constantly examined for weight and purity—an unwieldy practice that lasted for centuries. While China’s interest in silver spurred new avenues of trade and helped increase the country’s global economic footprint, Jin Xu argues that, in the long run, silver played a key role in the struggles and entanglements that led to the decline of the Chinese empire.
