Book excerpt: "Silly Sisters" is the second entry in the Alliterative Alphabet Series of everyday stories told in alliterative style: a fun, tongue-twisty way of telling stories designed to pique the interest of young readers, while also encouraging their writing skills. Not only is the story told in alliterative fashion, but amazingly, EVERY WORD of the story starts with the same letter -- S. Each line builds upon the last by adding one additional word. The result is a diamond "shape" poem; a real "gem," you might say, about two silly sisters who like to sing and frolic and be the center of attention -- even if it means waking a slumbering sibling. After all, you can't be the center of attention if no one is paying attention to you! So read along and see which silly sister prevails!

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory, the little-known story of three Tudor women who are united in sisterhood and yet compelled to be rivals when they fulfill their destinies as queens. As sisters they share an everlasting bond; as queens they can break each other’s hearts… When Katherine of Aragon is brought to the Tudor court as a young bride, the oldest princess, Margaret, takes her measure. With one look, each knows the other for a rival, an ally, a pawn, destined—with Margaret’s younger sister Mary—to a unique sisterhood. The three sisters will become the queens of England, Scotland, and France. United by family loyalties and affections, the three queens find themselves set against each other. Katherine commands an army against Margaret and kills her husband James IV of Scotland. But Margaret’s boy becomes heir to the Tudor throne when Katherine loses her son. Mary steals the widowed Margaret’s proposed husband, but when Mary is widowed it is her secret marriage for love that is the envy of the others. As they experience betrayals, dangers, loss, and passion, the three sisters find that the only constant in their perilous lives is their special bond, more powerful than any man, even a king.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gypsy kids are running all over, moving from place to place often; not making any real friends. But when an impulsive, careless, and questionable action leads to a horrific accident for one family, two sisters' lives will change forever. Jane with her broken bones--leg and pelvis--and scars on her head and the loneliness she had on waiting and waiting while her sister Jessie laid unconscious for days. Jessie Mohe and Jane Ann thought that they had a simple and easygoing life with their biological parents as they were always playing outside and only had a few responsibilities. As they would play with their other siblings, they would also perform several mischievous acts that would get them into some trouble. Their older immediate family seemed to almost always be around as these harmless schemes would happen, and they would get a good laugh from it all. Where is everyone whom we know personally--our parents, Gpa Jess, Uncle Jerry, and Uncle Bernard--and we are closest to? It's cloudy, and we can't see no one. Where is our life that we knew? Our little brains were working and going around in circles and circles. Our trauma, the anger we had in separate ways. After the accident, they would join their family with a new and very different lifestyle. They would experience new food, people, and unbelievable ways of life. The foster mother would push them to try new things, learn to be independent, and to be better people. As they go through new experiences, she would be right there to guide them. In their adult life, they would figure out many unsolved mysteries in their family, while several would still remain unsolved. The new beginnings of many activities and the challenges of life are still to come--the real happiness of life and what it is really about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does a novel focus on one life or many? Alex Woloch uses this simple question to develop a powerful new theory of the realist novel, based on how narratives distribute limited attention among a crowded field of characters. His argument has important implications for both literary studies and narrative theory. Characterization has long been a troubled and neglected problem within literary theory. Through close readings of such novels as Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, and Le Père Goriot, Woloch demonstrates that the representation of any character takes place within a shifting field of narrative attention and obscurity. Each individual--whether the central figure or a radically subordinated one--emerges as a character only through his or her distinct and contingent space within the narrative as a whole. The "character-space," as Woloch defines it, marks the dramatic interaction between an implied person and his or her delimited position within a narrative structure. The organization of, and clashes between, many character-spaces within a single narrative totality is essential to the novel's very achievement and concerns, striking at issues central to narrative poetics, the aesthetics of realism, and the dynamics of literary representation. Woloch's discussion of character-space allows for a different history of the novel and a new definition of characterization itself. By making the implied person indispensable to our understanding of literary form, this book offers a forward-looking avenue for contemporary narrative theory.

Book excerpt: The Life And Work Of 3 Female Folk Icons David Burke takes the lives of three of British folk music’s best-known and best-loved women and intertwines their stories. Why these three? As David explains: “Maddy Prior, June Tabor and Linda Thompson have both endured and evolved. The people’s relationship with its heritage may be capricious, but Maddy, June and Linda have remained resolutely committed to it while concurrently contemporising it.” They all began in the folk clubs of the second folk revival in the 1960s but, whilst staying true to their roots, have never been afraid to try new things (sometimes to the horror of traditional folkies). Maddy Prior MBE is best known as being the singer with Steeleye Span, though she has done many different things, including the Silly Sisters with June Tabor. June tried to juggle being a librarian and a singer, until singing, thankfully, won out. Elvis Costello said, “If you don’t like listening to June Tabor, you should stop listening to music” To a large extent, Linda Thompson’s later career has been blighted by hysterical dysphonia, a condition that has stopped her singing for long periods. For this book, all three women kindly provided interviews, but Linda could only communicate via e-mail; her condition (which comes and goes) was so bad at the time. However, her albums with ex-husband Richard Thompson are classics, as are her own solo albums: it is just sad that illness has deprived her (and us) of more of them. In addition to the three subjects, David has interviewed, amongst others, Ian Anderson, Martin Carthy, Christy Moore, Martin Simpson, Rufus Wainwright and even the creator of the Wombles pop group Mike Batt, who produced Steeleye Span.

Book excerpt: The story about precious, perfect, perky, pretty Poppy and his newly found full-of-fun friends is a story written with numerous tongue twisters. This book is a one of a kind. To my knowledge, there has never been a book like Poppy. This delightful and silly story will bring fun and laughter to everyone, especially when you read out loud. My wish, besides it being entertaining, is that Poppy will help children in need of better enunciation. Once you have read Poppy, you can't help but think, "I've never read anything like this." Poppy belonged to my two granddaughters, Brenna and Allie. He was a yellow mellow fellow, a parakeet. A rootie tootie cutie, mellow yellow fellow, a small gold parakeet named Poppy.

Book excerpt: Jane Bennet is a mild-mannered and thoughtful woman, always looking for the best in others. Elizabeth, though she loves her sister, has always despaired over Jane’s inability to perceive the motivations of others. But what if Jane was just as discerning as her sister and more forceful about expressing her opinion while keeping the other traits that comprise her angelic character? When a new family arrives at Netherfield Park, Jane Bennet has married and become Jane Harrington, and Mr. Bingley starts his tenure in Meryton with a faux pas, not realizing his angel is already married to another. Darcy, who has always deplored his friend’s tendency to become enamored with beautiful women, witnesses this, and while he laments his friend’s error, he appreciates the lack of Bingley’s usual infatuation in Meryton. Darcy also quickly becomes enamored with Mrs. Harrington’s pretty and vivacious sister. However, Jane and Elizabeth note that Mr. Bingley has begun to pay attention to their younger sister, and while neither thinks he has serious designs on her, they worry for their sister’s sensibilities. Complicating matters is Darcy’s wish to avoid appearing officious to his friend. As Darcy and Elizabeth’s appreciation for each other flourishes, the conflict within the Netherfield party grows, provoked by Bingley’s younger sister, who has no love for the neighborhood, and Bingley’s own actions toward a girl too young to accept his assurances. Together, they must forge through such trials in pursuit of a shared future, supported by Elizabeth’s dearest sister, who wishes for nothing more than Elizabeth’s happiness.

Book excerpt: Edited by the author of The Sellout, winner of the 2016 Man Booker Prize, Hokum is a liberating, eccentric, savagely comic anthology of the funniest writing by black Americans. This book is less a comprehensive collection than it is a mix-tape narrative dubbed by a trusted friend-a sampler of underground classics, rare grooves, and timeless summer jams, poetry and prose juxtaposed with the blues, hip-hop, political speeches, and the world's funniest radio sermon. The subtle musings of Toni Cade Bambara, Henry Dumas, and Harryette Mullen are bracketed by the profane and often loud ruminations of Langston Hughes, Darius James, Wanda Coleman, Tish Benson, Steve Cannon, and Hattie Gossett. Some of the funniest writers don't write, so included are selections from well-known yet unpublished wits Lightnin' Hopkins, Mike Tyson, and the Reverend Al Sharpton. Selections also come from public figures and authors whose humor, although incisive and profound, is often overlooked: Malcolm X, Suzan-Lori Parks, Zora Neale Hurston, Sojourner Truth, and W.E.B. Dubois. Groundbreaking, fierce, and hilarious, this is a necessary anthology for any fan or student of American writing, with a huge range and a smart, political grasp of the uses of humor.
