Book excerpt: Of all the products associated with the material wealth and cultural splendor of traditional Chinese civilization, none was so quintessentially Chinese as silk. From the most ancient times silk played a role in Chinese history, both as a symbol of imperial tradition and as a mainstay of the peasant economy. This study analyzes the development of China's silk industry in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing patterns of production and trade in fibres, textiles and clothing provide a classic case study of the dynamics of our interdependent world economy. For centuries Asia supplied the textile factories of Europe with natural fibres, including silk from East Asia exports virtually no natural fibres and instead is the world's most important exporter of manufactured textile products and chief importer of fibres. New Silk Roads, first published in 1992, demonstrates that despite the import barriers erected by advanced economies, textiles and clothing production continues to serve as an engine of growth for developing economies seeking to export their way out of poverty. This book is based on selected papers given at a conference which discussed East Asia's role in world fibre, textile and clothing markets. It draws on trade and development theory as well as on historical evidence to trace the development of these changing markets, which are now dominated by the newly industrialized economies of Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong and, increasingly, China and Thailand.

Book excerpt: This book explores the global development of the production and trade of silk and related industries from a historical perspective. From the sixteenth to the twentieth century, it takes long-term movements and global dynamics into account. Covering a wide geographical area, including East-Asia, Northern and Southern Europe, and North-America, the respective contributions examine economic activities related to silk production, silk processing, trading and consumption of silk and silk fabrics, while also highlighting diverse paths of industrialization and economic development. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which features contributions on silk markets and trade, covering topics such as auction sales and Sino-European trade. The second part addresses issues of work organization, institutional developments and the gendered division of labour, discussing topics such as systems of home-based and factory production and the organization of quality control. In turn, the third part highlights technological innovations and knowledge transfer. This book appeals to scholars and students of economic history who are interested in a better understanding of the key features and patterns in the development of the silk industry and trade and, more widely, in the global economic history of the early modern and modern periods.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silk Industry and Trade: A Study in the Economic Organization of the Export Trade of Kashmir and Indian Silks, With Special Reference to Their Utilization in the British and French Markets The present volume is intended to be an elementary introduction to my Economics of the Silk Industry. It embodies the results of an inquiry into the organization of the export trade of Kashmir and Indian silks, with special reference to their utilization in Great Britain and France. In undertaking this work, my principal object was to discover the exact requirements of the silk market and to present a general analysis of the facts to the interested parties. In doing this, I have pointed out a new source of supply for the consumer of raw silk and a new outlet for the producer. If India's resources of silk are to be developed on a commercial scale, they must find an outlet. The results of personal investigations outlined in this work clearly show what this outlet ought to be. The inquiry was conducted mainly on commercial and economic lines, and covered nearly all the principal silk centres in this country and in France. It is gratifying to note that everywhere my investigations met with success, and almost all the manufacturers, merchants and brokers showed great interest in the subject. I take this opportunity of expressing my thanks to all who helped me in my investigations. I am particularly obliged to Professor Lefroy, whose perfect knowledge of the Indian silk industry I used in formulating the lines of my inquiry. Sir Frank Warner, the then President of the British Silk Association, gave me valuable information with regard to the different aspects of the British silk industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length English-language study focusing on the early modern export of Chinese silk to New Spain from the sixteenth to the seventeenth century, An Object of Seduction compares and contrasts the two regions from perspectives of the sericulture development, the widespread circulation of silk fashion, and the government attempts at regulating the use of silk. Xiaolin Duan argues that the increasing demand for silk on the worldwide market on the one hand contributed to the parallel development of silk fashion and sericulture in China and New Spain, and on the other hand created conflicts on imperial regulations about foreign trade and hierarchical systems. Incorporating evidence from local gazetteers, correspondence, manual books, illustrated treatises, and miscellanies, this book explores how the growing desire for and production of raw silk and silk textiles empowered individuals and societies to claim and redefine their positions in changing time and space, thus breaking away from the traditional state control.

It analyzes the economic role of Japan’s eastern interior region and that of the port of Yokohama. It argues that the economic development in this period laid the foundations for Japan’s prewar industrial development in the late nineteenth century and was largely responsible for the integration of Japan into the global economy.
