Book excerpt: In this book, the selection criteria for material and production process are explained to improve the capacity and the cycle life of negative electrodes for lithium ion battery. In this sense, importance of Si thin film anode has been widely discussed. Among alternative production processes, magnetron sputtering is highlighted since it leads to form highly adherent amorphous/nano-sized crystaline structured film due to energetic particles deposition. Moreover to improve the electonic conductivity and to promote the mechanical resistance, Cu atoms are deposited with Si. The test results of different Si-Cu films show that compositionally graded film represents the most promising anode material because high Cu content at the bottom of the film enhances the adhesion and the low Cu content on top increases the capacity and the reversibility of lithiation/delithiation reactions. In the concept of the book, a clear understanding on the relationship between morphological, structural design and electrochemical performance of the thin films has been made. This would increase the likelihood of making high capacity anodes for next generation lithium ion batteries.

Book excerpt: The wide-scale use of green technologies such as electric vehicles has been slowed due to insufficient means of storing enough portable energy. Therefore it is critical that efficient storage mediums be developed in order to transform abundant renewable energy into an on-demand source of power. Lithium (Li) ion batteries are seeing a stream of improvements as they are introduced into many consumer electronics, electric vehicles and aircraft, and medical devices. Li-ion batteries are well suited for portable applications because of their high energy-to-weight ratios, high energy densities, and reasonable life cycles. Current research into Li-ion batteries is focused on enhancing its energy density, and by changing the electrode materials, greater energy capacities can be realized. Silicon (Si) is a very attractive option because it has the highest known theoretical charge capacity. Current Si anodes, however, suffer from early capacity fading caused by pulverization from the stresses induced by large volumetric changes that occur during charging and discharging. An innovative system aimed at resolving this issue is being developed. This system incorporates a thin Si film bonded to an elastomeric substrate which is intended to provide the desired stress relief. Non-linear finite element simulations have shown that a significant amount of deformation can be accommodated until a critical threshold of Li concentration is reached; beyond which buckling is induced and a wavy structure appears. When compared to a similar system using rigid substrates where no buckling occurs, the stress is reduced by an order of magnitude, significantly prolonging the life of the Si anode. Thus the stress can be released at high Li-ion diffusion induced strains by buckling the Si thin film. Several aspects of this anode system have been analyzed including studying the effects of charge rate and thin film plasticity, and the results are compared with preliminary empirical measurements to show great promise. This study serves as the basis for a radical resolution to one of the few remaining barriers left in the development of high performing Si based electrodes for Li-ion batteries.

Book excerpt: Batteries play a critical role in modern society and will only increase in importance as electric vehicles and grid-scale storage applications continue to grow. Silicon is a material of great interest as an anode for future battery applications, as it offers the possibility of greatly increased battery capacities and reduced weights. This work investigates two methods in which silicon may find use in batteries. First, silicon was shown to be a viable anode in primary battery systems using carbon monofluoride as a high-energy cathode for extremely high-temperature environments such as deep mineshafts. The temperatures achieved in these studies were some of the highest ever observed for a functioning lithium battery. In addition, the fundamental surface chemistry of silicon as a rechargeable anode for safer lithium-ion batteries was also investigated. Organosilicon-based electrolytes offer much higher flash points than the current generation of electrolytes, but the surface chemistry of their solid-electrolyte interphase formation on the silicon anode surface remains relatively unexplored until now. Finally, this work also presents a method for creation and subsequent functionalization of graphitic nanopillars. These nanopillars may serve as a route to well-ordered graphene nanoplatelets of monodisperse size and controllable chemistry.

Book excerpt: Development of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with higher capacity has been booming worldwide, as growing concerns about environmental issues and increasing petroleum costs. The demands for the LIBs include high energy and power densities, and better cyclic stability in order to meet a wide range of applications, such as portable devices and electric vehicles. Silicon has recently been explored as a promising anode material due to its low discharge potential (0.4 V) and high specific capacity (4200 mAh gsuper-1/super). The capacity of silicon potentially exceeds more than 10 times of the conventional graphite anode (372 mAh gsuper-1/super). However, the silicon anode experiences huge volume expansion (400%) and contraction during electrochemical cycles, resulting in pulverization and disintegration of the active material. For the improvement of the battery performance, understanding of the failure mechanism associated with the stress evolution during cycling is critical. This study aims (1) to develop high performance anode materials and (2) to analyze the mechanism of the capacity fading using a novel in-situ characterization technique in order to optimize the electrode design for better operation of the battery. The silicon nitride thin film anodes were investigated for the improvement of cycling performance. In addition, the rate performance was enhanced by controlling the parameters in film deposition. Si-based thin films undergo large stresses induced by the volume changes, which results in material degradation and capacity fading. Hence, the in-situ measurement of the electrochemical processes is critical to clarify how the electrode degrades with time under cycling. For the in-situ measurement, a white light interferometry (WLI) and laser vibrometer were used to gather quantitative data. Amorphous silicon (italica

Book excerpt: The international seminar "Material Behavior and Physical Chemistry in Liquid Metal Systems" was organized by the Institute of Materials and Solid State Research of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center (Karlsruhe, Federal Republic of Germany). The seminar was held at the Nuclear Engineering School of the center on March 24-26, 1981. The aim of the seminar was to give metallurgists, chemists,. and physicists working in different areas of the science and technology of liquid metals an opportunity to discuss the basic work and the need for further work in this field. Since the seminar was held near one of the laboratories which for the last few years has been engaged in liquid alkali metal studies, partic ipants also had an opportunity to observe modern equipment for liquid alkali metal research. Interest in the application of liquid metals as working fluids in energy production, conversion, and storage is increasing. The technology has already demonstrated its high standards, which make possible the operation of large sodium-cooled fast reactors. Past conferences have shown, however, that there is still a lack of basic knowledge and understanding. Therefore, the aim of the present seminar was to discuss basic work in detail, and most of the papers contributed to this objective.

Book excerpt: Lithium-ion (Li+) rechargeable batteries, compared to other popular rechargeable batteries, are the most promising candidates for electric vehicles and other uses for their high operating voltage, high energy, and high power density. In recent years, silicon based anode has attracted a lot of attention because of its high capacity of ~3579 mA h g-1 in its fully lithiated state. But the capacity of the silicon based anodes decreases drastically because lithiation results in a drastic increase of volume by 270% in silicon anode resulting in its destruction. In this work, I report the development of amorphous p-type Si thin films for anode applications grown by rf sputtering at 400oC using different rf power. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of silicon. Half-cell reaction of p-type Si thin films was done using cyclic voltammetry to show the specific capacity of the anode. Voltammogram showed that current was decreasing with the increase of number of cycle of charging-discharging due to materials degradation.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electromechanical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic.
