Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 took the American military by surprise. Rushing to respond, the US and its allies developed a selective overflight program to gather intelligence. Silent Warriors, Incredible Courage is a history of the Cold War overflights of the Soviet Union, its allies, and the People's Republic of China, based on extensive interviews with dozens of pilots who flew these dangerous missions. In 1954 the number of flights expanded, and the highly classified SENSINT program was born. Soon, American RB-45C, RB-47E/H, RF-100s, and various versions of the RB-57 were in the air on an almost constant basis, providing the president and military leadership with hard facts about enemy capabilities and intentions. Eventually the SENSINT program was replaced by the high-flying U-2 spy plane. The U-2 overflights removed the mysteries of Soviet military power. These flights remained active until 1960 when a U-2 was shot down by Russian missiles, leading to the end of the program. Shortly thereafter planes were replaced by spy satellites. The overflights were so highly classified that no one, planner or participant, was allowed to talk about them—and no one did, until the overflight program and its pictorial record was declassified in the 1990s. Through extensive research of existing literature on the overflights and interviews conducted by Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, this book reveals the story of the entire overflight program through the eyes of the pilots and crew who flew the planes. Samuel's account tells the stories of American heroes who risked their lives—and sometimes lost them—to protect their country.

Book excerpt: The Alamo Scouts, Sixth Army's Special Reconnaissance Unit of World War II, provided intelligence-gathering and tactical reconnaissance in the Pacific Theatre. During the war, they performed over 106 successful missions in the Admiralty Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines, most deep behind enemy lines. The Scouts took part in liberating two POW camps. The Scouts evolved from a simple reconnaissance unit to a sophisticated intelligence unit supplying and coordinating large-scale guerilla operations on Leyte and Luzon. They did this without losing a man, killed or captured. The Scouts are now recognised as forerunners of the modern Special Forces.

Book excerpt: "Silent warriors: a memoir of America's 442nd Regimental Combat Team is author Jack K. Wakamatsu's deeply felt account of his experiences in World War II. A Nisei, or Japanese-American, Wakamatsu finds himself in a particularly unique position as the war begins. As our government interns his parents in the infamous Manzanar "security camp", his father's business left in unscrupulous hands, Jack and many of his Nisei friends prepare to wage war in the European theater, their twofold aim: to fight for liberty, and to prove to their Caucasian counterparts that they, too, are loyal, patriotic Americans. Made up mostly of Nisei like Wakamatsu, the 442nd's exploits and adventures make for unforgettable reading. In a particularly unsettling episode, a young soldier returns from a harrowing day on the front line, only to learn that angry neighbors have turned against his parents back home and burned them out of their house. The incident is rendered doubly poignant in light of the tremendous dedication and discipline of the 442nd soldiers, many of whom would go on to make the ultimate sacrifice before the war ends. In an era where, as the author points out, we take our priceless freedom entirely too much for granted, Silent warriors is a chilling reminder of the high price that has so often been paid for the sake of preserving American democracy"--Jacket.

Spruance, this work is now available in trade paperback for the first time. Spruance, victor of the battles of Midway and the Philippine Sea and commander of the Fifth Fleet in the invasions of the Gilberts, the Marshalls, the Marianas, and Okinawa, is one of the towering figures in American naval history. Yet his reserved, cerebral personality did not make “good copy” for correspondents, and until the publication of The Quiet Warrior he remained an elusive figure. Thomas Buell has succeeded in evoking the nature of the man as well as recording the achievements of the admiral in this brilliant biography, which won the Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement the year of its publication.

Book excerpt: Guy Thomas is best known as inventor of S-AIS, the most impactful invention in the marine world since radar, but his life as a Navy "spook" was even more unusual and eventful. The first career officer of his classified field to step "Out of the Shadows" to describe operations at the tactical level in combat off Vietnam and on covert missions off Russia, Korea, China, and the Middle East, his very unique multi-service career as a subject matter expert on surveillance systems took him into the highest offices of the Intelligence Community. As the first officer to step "Out of the Shadows”, the security review took 19 months and involved the NSA, FBI, and CIA, plus the US Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as the National Security Council, all places he had worked with in a career of over 50 years. He goes on to describe the origins and initial trials of Satellite AIS (S-AIS). A "must-read” for National Security and Technical Intelligence buffs.

Book excerpt: An unconventional war requires unconventional men—the Special Forces. Green Berets • Navy SEALS • Rangers • Air Force Special Operations • PsyOps • Civil Affairs • and other special-mission units The first two Commanders books, Every Man a Tiger and Into the Storm, provided masterly blends of history, biography, you-are-there narrative, insight into the practice of leadership, and plain old-fashioned storytelling. Shadow Warriors is all of that and more, a book of uncommon timeliness, for, in the words of Lieutenant General Bill Yarborough, “there are itches that only Special Forces can scratch.” Now, Carl Stiner—the second commander of SOCOM, the U.S. Special Operations Command—and Tom Clancy trace the transformation of the Special Forces from the small core of outsiders of the 1950s, through the cauldron of Vietnam, to the rebirth of the SF in the late 1980s and 1990s, and on into the new century as the bearer of the largest, most mixed, and most complex set of missions in the U.S. military. These are the first-hand accounts of soldiers fighting outside the lines: counterterrorism, raids, hostage rescues, reconnaissance, counterinsurgency, and psychological operations—from Vietnam and Laos to Lebanon to Panama, to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, to the new wars of today…

Book excerpt: Here are some of the most courageous missions executed by six-man teams on their own deep behind enemy lines. Ranging from the Central Highlands to the Mekong Delta to excursions— authorized and unauthorized—into Cambodia, these gripping accounts begin when the call first went out for covert U.S. long-range reconnaissance patrols in late 1965, continue through the battles of Tet, and go all the way up to the final, tortured pullout. These are LRRP, LRP, and Ranger units at their finest, under the most desperate circumstances: one team surrounded by the enemy with no choice but to break out of the trap—or die, another caught in an ambush of horrific proportions. When recon missions suddenly became contact missions, when grenades started flying and AK-47s were smoking, each man’s life was instantly on the line—and only his skills and the grit of his teammates could prevent certain death. These highly trained warriors were among the best America had to offer, and they gave their best, no matter how high the price. . . .
