How can I attain to my inner peace, certainty, and happiness? What is life and how do I understand it fully? How can I go beyond my daily strife and struggle? What is spirituality and how do I pursue it? What exactly is Enlightenment and how do I attain it? This book is transcribed from talks delivered by Avi, answering personal questions of spiritual seekers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and acclaimed presidential historian Douglas Brinkley chronicles the rise of environmental activism during the Long Sixties (1960-1973), telling the story of an indomitable generation that saved the natural world under the leadership of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon. With the detonation of the Trinity explosion in the New Mexico desert in 1945, the United States took control of Earth’s destiny for the first time. After the Truman administration dropped atomic bombs on Japan to end World War II, a grim new epoch had arrived. During the early Cold War years, the federal government routinely detonated nuclear devices in the Nevada desert and the Marshall Islands. Not only was nuclear fallout a public health menace, but entire ecosystems were contaminated with radioactive materials. During the 1950s, an unprecedented postwar economic boom took hold, with America becoming the world’s leading hyperindustrial and military giant. But with this historic prosperity came a heavy cost: oceans began to die, wilderness vanished, the insecticide DDT poisoned ecosystems, wildlife perished, and chronic smog blighted major cities. In Silent Spring Revolution, Douglas Brinkley pays tribute to those who combated the mauling of the natural world in the Long Sixties: Rachel Carson (a marine biologist and author), David Brower (director of the Sierra Club), Barry Commoner (an environmental justice advocate), Coretta Scott King (an antinuclear activist), Stewart Udall (the secretary of the interior), William O. Douglas (Supreme Court justice), Cesar Chavez (a labor organizer), and other crusaders are profiled with verve and insight. Carson’s book Silent Spring, published in 1962, depicted how detrimental DDT was to living creatures. The exposé launched an ecological revolution that inspired such landmark legislation as the Wilderness Act (1964), the Clean Air Acts (1963 and 1970), and the Endangered Species Acts (1966, 1969, and 1973). In intimate detail, Brinkley extrapolates on such epic events as the Donora (Pennsylvania) smog incident, JFK’s Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, Great Lakes preservation, the Santa Barbara oil spill, and the first Earth Day. With the United States grappling with climate change and resource exhaustion, Douglas Brinkley’s meticulously researched and deftly written Silent Spring Revolution reminds us that a new generation of twenty-first-century environmentalists can save the planet from ruin. Silent Spring Revolution features two 8-page color photo inserts.

Book excerpt: 'Evan woke up to a blinding light and the world was spinning with him. He heard birds chirping. "Birdsong?" he couldn't believe his ears. Although his vision was still rather blurry, he was quite sure he was seeing clouds. "Clouds? Where am I?" he asked to himself as he reached for his watch. "Letti, Letti! Answer me! Ahhhh it's discharged..." He massaged his aching shoulder and felt terribly dizzy. Within moments, however, he pulled himself together and sat up from his comfortable bed. A warm breeze hit his face. He looked in front of him. "But it's the sarcophagus!" he was shocked as his vision became sharper. "And this is the Earth! Oh no! I remember now!' Space Force pilot, Evan Chase didn't know at the time that he had slept through a catastrophe that had struck the entire world and that he might be the only sane person left on Earth. But soon he must fight for his life against a human race that has regressed into cavemen. When all hope is lost, he receives unexpected help. From outer space. Commander Tobion Forranti - from novel of Alexander Steward - KIRRDA The Peaceful Planet - and his crew are on the threshold of the solar system when they hear of a catastrophe on Earth. They will do anything to save humanity, but they need the work of Earth's scientists. Their only hope is to find a someone who can still think and get them into the vast SkyCity space station. And, what happens to the rapidly approaching aliens in space as Evan Chase fights for his life on Earth, we find out in Alexander Steward's novel: NITO The New Home. An exciting, easy to read story about the first, not exactly the best, encounter between aliens and Earthlings. But as usual, there's a silver lining in every bad thing...

Book excerpt: Is there more to Buddhism than sitting in silent meditation? Is modern Buddhism relevant to the problems of daily life? Does it empower individuals to transform their lives? Or has Buddhism become too detached, so still and quiet that the Buddha has fallen asleep? Waking the Buddha tells the story of the Soka Gakkai International, the largest, most dynamic Buddhist movement in the world today—and one that is waking up and shaking up Buddhism so it can truly work in ordinary people’s lives. Drawing on his long personal experience as a Buddhist teacher, journalist, and editor, Clark Strand offers broad insight into how and why the Soka Gakkai, with its commitment to social justice and its egalitarian approach, has become a role model, not only for other schools of Buddhism, but for other religions as well. Readers will be inspired by the struggles and triumphs of the Soka Gakkai’s three founding presidents—individuals who staked their lives on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and the extraordinary power of those teachings to help people become happy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laoism is the first ever book on the complete teachings of Lao Zi, an ancient Chinese philosopher-sage. It is also the first English depiction to distinguish Lao Zi's teachings from Taoism, a native religion of China. Endless revelations and commentaries on his text of Tao Te Ching (text) have been, and continuously exist in Chinese and many other languages, but not yet a complete work between the text and its poetic summary: the Lao Zi's self-invented fourteen-character couplet. The couplet, as old as the text, has been circulating secretively only in a few monasteries. This makes the writers throughout the history not being able to get a full picture on his work and the public inaccessible. The completion of such a project must be a combination of the spiritual inclination into the text and the heart-sealed connection with Lao Zi's spirit. The time has come.

Book excerpt: We think that on one hand there is our mind and on the other hand there is what seems separate from the mind: physical body and the world. Taking for granted that our perception is an objective tool for examining the “outside” reality, we end up in conflict with everything around us and with ourselves. Our sickness and unhappiness is the proof that our mind is at war, yet we are doing this onto ourselves. When we realize that we are always in control, we can disregard our false interpretation the senses are reporting us. We will then realize what is of valuable and let go of valueless. We need to question our habitual responses based on fears from the past and start fresh and learn to make new decisions based on the desire for inner peace and equality with everyone. Everyone is aware of the same “I” as I am. “I” is not divided. All Power in it is the same and maximal; it is one. There is no other Power than this. It has no parts. It is perfectly united and at our disposal. It is our “daily bread.” Yet because we rather focus our attention on the “outside” body and the world, we perceive ourselves split instead of united with all Creation. When we change our focus and look at each fragment of conflict, we chose to perceive and decide to let the division go and become aware of Oneness of “I” instead. This is the decision for healing. In the book I have described fragmentation of our thinking in many practical situations and how I dealt with them. This process of “undoing” will heal the mind that will also reflect upon the body. At first it was easier for me to practice undoing with children rather than adults. I ran my own gymnastic school for twenty-three years, and by deciding to let it be a place of fun, it became our mutual learning ground. The school was completely transformed and provided many programs for joyous socializing. In an open-structure and noncompetitive environment, the children learn the best. The “teacher” can choose to be neutral (peaceful) and let children learn how to make their own decisions. In the forgiveness process of letting go, everyone needs be included, because everyone is innocent. The book does concentrate on clarifying the two thought systems that govern our thinking. The choice is always ours. In order to focus on the fundamental distinction between them, I repeat the concepts, illustrate them in practical situations, and summarize the approach of “changing of mind.” By completing the manuscript, I have realized that all information I need is now at my disposal, and I will receive more as I apply it more. It is only the application that opens the door to understanding of what is the next step to take. The purpose of all situations is our healing. The sooner we respond to them in the peaceful way, the faster our mind heals. Yet we can take as long as we want to take. The basic premise is that Power of God is within, and how I feel is the direct result of what I think. If I have problems, I do not need to change the world in order to have Peace, but to change what I think. This is done through relationships. People that are assigned to learn with us are constantly appearing in our lives. I can assure you that you would not choose them yourself. However, you called them, and they responded. You are ready for them. They present rather than an illusion of love. They will bring more harmony and joy to your life than you could ever imagine. Forgive them and you will see them truly. Opening the door to everyone is the key to restoration of your true Self. Welcome on board.
