Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ella Giancetti thought certain things had ended in the South, like segregation and signs announcing 'Whites Only'. When she moves to Paterson, Virginia, though, she quickly discovers that, though the signs might be gone, some of the attitudes remain... Accepting her first job as a college professor in a different state is supposed to be the start of a new life as Ella heals from the death of her mother. Trying to balance preparations for the new semester with incessant phone calls from her abrasive sister Lisa is difficult enough before complications appear. Someone already hates her enough to vandalize her house, and there's a constant supply of unannounced visitors, like her enigmatic landlord, her eccentric older neighbor, a handsome police officer, and a ghost. Of the three, the ghost is the real problem. It appears in her dreams, it appears in person. It makes a mess. Ella needs to know how this young Black woman became a ghost if she ever wants to have a peaceful night in her new home. Working to find out who is threatening her and why, she can't help wondering about the irony of seeing other people's ghosts - but not her own mother, whom she desperately misses. As the history of the town of Paterson and the house she lives in is uncovered, Ella wonders if the past is truly the past and questions what will happen once she finds the truth about the events of 1960.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strewn along the interstates, blue highways, and back roads-all across the South, there are Churches. They come in all shapes, sizes and denominations. But, they have one thing in common. SIGNS. Hand-lettered signs, planted by the roadside, either quoting Scripture, or containing cleverly worded sayings, all designed to be attention grabbing, thought provoking and memorable. All for the purpose of providing a mini-sermon to everyone who passes by. Sadly, the authors discovered in preparing this book that these familiar parts of Americana are quickly fading from view. These "hand-lettered" signs are being replaced by "electronic digital" signs, some of which are pictured here. These fancy new signs deliver the same messages, but will never deliver the same soul. Bucky Jones and Eloise Veal are photographers and writers who live in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains just outside the quaint, small town of Brevard, NC. They are always on the lookout for unique ideas to present to the world in picture book form. Their ideas require a lot of travel, which they both enjoy very much. With so much of the world changing at "techno" speed, they have decided to devote their work to, and to preserve, as much "Americana" as possible. This book, as well as others, already in the planning stages, is about holding on to the things that are good about America, whether religious, spiritual or secular. "Coffee Table" books that will serve to inform, possibly transform, and at least bring a smile to the faces of tomorrow's generation - - who will hopefully take a few minutes to put down the latest and greatest smartphone, pick up a book like this, and learn a little about what came before. For those of us who have lived through this last 50 years in America, we have all learned that we can't hold on to the past, but we can open this book, thumb through its pages for a little while, and remember it - and enjoy it again.

Book excerpt: A brothers’ fishing trip goes disturbingly off course in this drug-fueled backwater noir—the debut novel by the art-rock pioneer and frontman for Primus. In the rural town of El Sobrante, California, two estranged brothers are reunited. While Earl Paxton never left, Ed moved on to a new life in Berkley. When the death of their father brings Ed back home, a fishing trip seems like the perfect way to reconnect. But Ed didn’t count on Donny Vowdy joining the party. As frustrations, alcohol, and hallucinogens start dredging up old grudges and long-held rivalries, the trip soon takes an unsettling turn. A dark, clever tale of brotherhood, misconceptions, drugs and murder, South of the Pumphouse combines classic motifs of epic struggle, evocative imagery, and the raw, tweaked perspective of a Hunter S. Thompson novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one begin to understand the idea of a distinctive southern way of life—a concept as enduring as it is disputed? In this examination of the American South in national and global contexts, celebrated historian Charles Reagan Wilson assesses how diverse communities of southerners have sought to define the region's identity. Surveying three centuries of southern regional consciousness across many genres, disciplines, and cultural strains, Wilson considers and challenges prior presentations of the region, advancing a vision of southern culture that has always been plural, dynamic, and complicated by race and class. Structured in three parts, The Southern Way of Life takes readers on a journey from the colonial era to the present, from when complex ideas of "southern civilization" rooted in slaveholding and agrarianism dominated to the twenty-first-century rise of a modern, multicultural "southern living." As Wilson shows, there is no singular or essential South but rather a rich tapestry woven with contestations, contingencies, and change.

Book excerpt: From hand-rendered folk signs to high-dollar church marquees, religious messages and imagery saturate the landscape of the American South. In With Signs Following, photographer and southern studies scholar Joe York introduces readers to the role of artistic, witty advertising in southern churches. In seventy black-and-white images of religious signs and other ephemera, he simultaneously presents the factual while encouraging reflection and introspection. Though York's pictures speak volumes, With Signs Following features an equally compelling essay by York. This piece seeks the stories of the sign makers through informal interviews. The combination of images and text offers an insightful, humorous, historically grounded perspective on one of the South's most familiar scenes. In collecting images of religious roadside signs from across the region and interviews with the evangelicals who put them there, Joe York shows us the "Christ-haunted" South as it has never before been considered. Joe York is a freelance photographer and a producer and director of documentary films for the Center for Documentary Projects and the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi. Charles Reagan Wilson is director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive fieldwork in the community of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina, this book uses a semiotic approach to investigate the historic and contemporary role of the Sequoyan syllabary--the written system for representing the sounds of the Cherokee language--in Eastern Cherokee life. The Cherokee syllabary was invented in the 1820s by the respected Cherokee Sequoyah. The syllabary quickly replaced alternative writing systems for Cherokee and was reportedly in widespread use by the mid-nineteenth century. After that, literacy in Cherokee declined, except in specialized religious contexts. But as Bender shows, recent interest in cultural revitalization among the Cherokees has increased the use of the syllabary in education, publications, and even signage. Bender also explores the role played by the syllabary within the ever more important context of tourism. (The Eastern Cherokee Band hosts millions of visitors each year in the Great Smoky Mountains.) English is the predominant language used in the Cherokee community, but Bender shows how the syllabary is used in special and subtle ways that help to shape a shared cultural and linguistic identity among the Cherokees. Signs of Cherokee Culture thus makes an important contribution to the ethnographic literature on culturally specific literacies.
