Book excerpt: An Experimental Approach to CDMA and Interference Mitigation was written with the admittedly ambitious intent of filling the gap between communication theory and VLSI implementation, and thus to provide a more general/theoretical approach to the design, development, and testing of a CDMA receiver. As a consequence, the concepts and techniques that are presented turn out to be applicable to a more general kind of digital wireless modems in terms of receiver architecture design and implementation. As the reader will easily find out, the subject of digital modem design and implementation is addressed in the book starting from a theoretical approach (supported by proper bibliographic references), and is followed by application issues, with reference to an ESA experiment assumed as a case study. A complete design flow, from specification to implementation, including testing and final verification is then presented. This leads the reader step-by-step to a thorough understanding of CDMA transmission and detection, and constitutes a practical guidance for the design of VLSI wireless mobile terminals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Spread Spectrum brings together studies and recent work on six exciting topics from the spread spectrum arts. The book gives a wide, collective view of trends, ideas, and techniques in the spread spectrum discipline, due to the authors' extensive work on spread spectrum techniques and applications from different vantage points. The inexorable march of electronics towards ever faster, ever smaller, and ever more powerful electronic and optical circuitry has wrought, and will continue to enable, profound changes in the spread spectrum arts, by allowing increasingly complex signalling waveforms and statistical tests to be implemented as the theory beyond spread spectrum continues to evolve. Perspectives in Spread Spectrum is divided into six chapters. The first chapter deals with sequence spreading design. There is not a single metric for design of spreading sequences; rather, the design is ideally tailored to the specific scenario of usage. This chapter delves into recent and very promising synthesis work. The second chapter deals with OFDM techniques. As channels become wider and trans-channel fading (or jamming) becomes frequency selective across the band, OFDM techniques may provide a powerful alternative design perspective. The third chapter is a generalization of the venerable Walsh functions. A new modulation scheme, Geometric Harmonic Modulation, GHM for short, is reviewed and characterized as a form of OFDM. From GHM, a further generalization of the Walsh functions is derived for non-binary signalling. The fourth chapter is concerned with some new and exciting results regarding the follower jammer paradigm. A counter-countermeasure technique is reviewed, notable for its counterintuitive characteristic which can be understood from a simple yet elegant game framework. The fifth chapter recounts some results pertaining to random coding for an optical spread spectrum link. The technique is based on laser speckle statistics and uses a coherent array of spatial light modulators at the transmitter but allows the receiver to be realized as a spatially distributed radiometric and therefore incoherent structure. The sixth and final chapter looks at an important and interesting application of spread spectrum to accurately locate a wideband, ‘bent pipe’, satellite transponder. It is, in a strong sense, an inverted GPS technique. Perspectives in Spread Spectrum serves as an excellent reference and source of ideas for further research, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Book excerpt: The book is devoted to advanced radiocommunication, discussing the merits and operational aspects of spread spectrum signalling. Spread spectrum modulation is emerging as one of the most important tools for combatting a wide range of problems usually encountered in radiocommunication. For military applications the signalling is able to resist difficulties deliberately introduced by an enemy, such as jamming and eavesdropping. For civil application, the efficient signal multiplexing and multipath rejection capability is of great interest. The price paid however is the need for very complex processing of the radio signals. This task put great challenges on new technologies and design, and it is only recently that operational systems have started to emerge from the laboratories. The book starts by comparing spread spectrum modulation and conventional modulation methods, and then discusses demodulation, which requires both special acquisition and synchronisation techniques. The electronic warfare scenario is introduced, discussing the principles of various spreading techniques and possible countermeasures. The coding for bandwidth spreading in a direct sequence spread spectrum system is treated by discussing the most common codes and their different figures of merit with respect to multipath, code division multiplexing and signal concealment. The book also illustrates the possible benefits, as well as limits to the use of new hardware technology to accomplish the various functions necessary for successful operation of a spread spectrum system. The effect of the propagation environment on spread spectrum is treated both analytically and through reported experiments and simulations. Finally the book considers the task of designing a complete communication network and discusses the usefulness and technology for additional interference suppressing techniques suitable to work with spread spectrum systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequency spectrum is a limited and valuable resource for wireless communications. A good example can be observed among network operators in Europe for the prices to pay for UMTS-frequency bands. Therefore, the first goal when designing future wireless communication systems (e.g. 4G - fourth generation) has to be the increase in spectral efficiency. The development in digital communications in the past years has enabled efficient modulation and coding techniques for robust and spectral efficient data, speech, audio and video transmission. These are the multi-carrier modulation (e.g. OFDM) and the spread spectrum technique (e.g. DS-CDMA), where OFDM was chosen for broadcast applications (DVB, DAB) as well as for broadband wireless indoor standards (ETSI HIPERLAN-II, IEEE-802.11) and the DS-CDMA was selected in mobile communications (IS-95, third generation mobile radio systems world wide, UMTS/IMT 2000). Since 1993 various combinations of multi-carrier (MC) modulation and the spread spectrum (SS) technique have been introduced and the field of MC-SS communications has become an independent and important research topic with increasing activities. New application fields have been proposed such as high rate cellular mobile, high rate wireless indoor and LMDS. It has been shown that MC-SS offers the high spectral efficiency, robustness and flexibility that is required for the next generation systems. Meanwhile, different alternative hybrid schemes such as OFDM/OFDMA, MC-TDMA, etc. have been deeply analysed and adopted in different international standards (ETSI-BRAN, IEEE-802 & MMAC). Multi-Carrier & Spread-Spectrum: Analysis of Hybrid Air Interfaces draws together all of the above mentioned hybrid schemes therefore providing a greatly needed resource for system engineers, telecommunication designers and researchers in order to enable them to develop, build and deploy several schemes based on MC-transmission for the next generation systems (which will be an integration of broadband multimedia services covering both 4G mobile and fixed wireless systems). * Offers a complete treatment of multi-carrier, spread-spectrum (SS) and time division multiplexing (TDM) techniques * Provides an in-depth insight into hybrid multiple access techniques based on multi-carrier (MC) transmission * Presents numerous hybrid multiple access and air interface architectures including OFDM/CDMA, MC-CDMA, MC-DS-CDMA and MT-CDMA * Covers new techniques such as space-time coding and software radio Telecommunications engineers, hardware & software system designers and researchers as well as students, lecturers and technicians will all find this an invaluable addition to their bookshelf.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We first present a statistical parallel interference cancellation (STPIC) technique. Here we propose two different methods: instantaneous STPIC (ISTPIC), in which IC is performed only on the bits whose absolute log likelihood ratio (LLR) is below a pre-selected threshold, and block STPIC (BSTPIC), in which IC is performed only on the blocks whose average signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) is below a pre-selected threshold. Both LLR and SINR statistics reduce to quantities simple to obtain. It has been shown that both ISTPIC and BSTPIC can achieve performance similar to or better than conventional full PIC (FPIC), but with significantly reduced computational complexity. It is also shown that the proposed ISTPIC has larger performance gain than conventional FPIC in higher loading case where efficient interference cancellation techniques are mostly needed. We also propose a new generalized soft limiter (GSL) that combines the advantage of hard decision and partial soft decision. In GSL, hard decisions are made on "reliable" signals with absolute amplitudes larger than a threshold, whereas partial soft decisions are made on "unreliable" signals with absolute amplitudes less than the threshold. We have shown that PIC using the proposed GSL has performance similar to that using hyperbolic tangent decision, which has been shown to be the optimal decision in the single user case with Gaussian interference and noise, but with easier implementation. Furthermore, we propose new techniques that combine the STPIC with partial PIC or other improved decision techniques, which have shown to be capable of achieving performance similar to or better than original techniques with reduced computational complexity. We also evaluate and compare the performance of different PIC techniques in the presence of imperfect channel estimation and near-far effects. Performance analysis and comparison of different PIC techniques have also been done in multi-rate DS-CDMA systems with different schemes: variable spreading gain, multi-code, and variable chip rate. Finally, we review narrowband interference (NBI) suppression techniques and investigate the performance of a decision feedback scheme aided by the proposed GSL-PIC in the presence of NBI.

Book excerpt: The performance of biphase direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (SSMA) communication for a general class of fading channels is investigated. The channels considered are those for which the channel output consists of a strong stable specular signal plus a faded version of this signal. Such channels are the result of a transmission medium which gives rise to a major stable communication path and a number of additional weaker communication paths. The fading channel is modeled as a general is modeled as a general wide-sense-stationary uncorrelated-scattering (WSSUS) channel -- a model which is general enough to exhibit both time and frequency selectivity and to impose no restrictions on the fading rate. A discussion of the important parameters of the WSSUS channel is given and two important classes of WSSUS channels are developed from the general fading channel model; time-selective fading channels and frequency-selective fading channels. In analyzing the performance of direct-sequence SSMA communications via fading channels two measures of system performance that are considered are average signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver output and the average probability of error.
