In Sifting the Ashes, over a hundred individual and collaborative poems explore what it takes to survive after all is suddenly taken. Combined life experiences of love, loss, and personal tragedy sift what's salvageable from the aftermath of fire, searching through the layers of ash for lessons about death, cremation, and the various stages of grief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sifting the Ashes chronicles jaelynns life as an African-American baby boomer facing new challenges that her mother never faced: Corporate America, instant material success, and growing up in an sexually open society. It is a graphic account of how a southern "good little girl" who was raised in the church with two loving parents struggled with low self- esteem and long bouts of depression. Her attempt to be accepted caused her to be used by several men which fueled her contempt of herself even more. Jaelynn discusses openly the consequences of multiple partners, the day that she seriously thought of suicide and the breakthrough that is a work in progress four years later. The verbal and physical abuse at the hands of her husband plus a failed relationship after the marriage caused her to mentally break down and seek help to determine why she was not worthy enough to love. Sifting the Ashes is written in poems, a manuscript that originally started as a therapeutic way for jaelynn to face her life and see, although painful, the power of the experiences in her life. Her sister, after reading the book told her that she needed to pursue publishing the book for others to share this unique story. After several friends read and agreed the importance of her lessons, jaelynn decided to share this journal with others to realize that the light we are looking for from others can always be found within.

It's not an easy job, the clues tend to burn up with everything else, and interviews only prove no one knows anything, has seen anything, or heard anything. Thinking it will help the public come forward with information, the Mayor offers a reward, but that only overloads Kristin with suspects, just as the commissioner imposes a forty-eight hour deadline, make an arrest, or else. Once on the trail, Kristin matches wits with the elusive arsonist, but soon realizes she's become both hunter and prey. As the public, media, and politicians scream for results, Kristin's under fire to stop the blazes before another property, or worse, another life, goes up in smoke.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passionate, strong-minded nonfiction from the National Book Award-winning author of The Corrections Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections was the best-loved and most-written-about novel of 2001. Nearly every in-depth review of it discussed what became known as "The Harper's Essay," Franzen's controversial 1996 investigation of the fate of the American novel. This essay is reprinted for the first time in How to be Alone, along with the personal essays and the dead-on reportage that earned Franzen a wide readership before the success of The Corrections. Although his subjects range from the sex-advice industry to the way a supermax prison works, each piece wrestles with familiar themes of Franzen's writing: the erosion of civic life and private dignity and the hidden persistence of loneliness in postmodern, imperial America. Recent pieces include a moving essay on his father's stuggle with Alzheimer's disease (which has already been reprinted around the world) and a rueful account of Franzen's brief tenure as an Oprah Winfrey author. As a collection, these essays record what Franzen calls "a movement away from an angry and frightened isolation toward an acceptance--even a celebration--of being a reader and a writer." At the same time they show the wry distrust of the claims of technology and psychology, the love-hate relationship with consumerism, and the subversive belief in the tragic shape of the individual life that help make Franzen one of our sharpest, toughest, and most entertaining social critics.
