Book excerpt: The general objective of the investigation was to study experimentally the behavior to failure of flexible, horizontally oriented cylinders buried at various depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to either static or dynamic surface overpressures. Static and dynamic tests were conducted on 33 different cylinders, fabricated of high-yield-strength aluminum. Results indicated that collapse of the cylinders occurred while the strains in the cylinder walls were still in the elastic range. The cylinders buried at the shallow depths (zero to one-half cylinder diameter above the crown) collapsed by a catastrophic snap-through or caving of the crown. For the cylinders buried at depths of three-quarters to two cylinder diameters above the crown, the mode of collapse was an instantaneous elastic buckle that occurred at the spring line or invert of the cylinder. The collapse mode of the cylinders under dynamic overpressure was similar to that of the cylinders collapsing under static overpressure. The results of the investigation verified the applicability of an equation for predicting the static collapse overpressure for smooth-walled, horizontally oriented, buried cylindrical structures and entranceways. The hoop-compression theory was found to be applicable for analyzing the structural design to determine if the cylinder would collapse in the elastic range. (Author).

Book excerpt: A combined analytical/experimental study entitled 'Canister-Backfill-Medium Interaction' (CBMI) was conducted to investigate the effects of backfilling procedures on the response of ground motion instruments located in instrumentation boreholes during wave propagation experiments. The experimental portion was conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) and is reported herein. A companion analytical study was conducted by Agbabian Associates (AA), El Segundo, California. The analytical study attempted to calculate the measured motion-time histories by use of input load functions and material properties data. Results of the analytical effort are discussed in a separate report published by AA.

Book excerpt: Outrunning ground shock data from the 100- to 10-psi overpressure decade in six large surface high explosive (HE) tests, three from a rock site and three from a glaciated soil site, were analyzed for the effect of gross changes in constitutive properties. Axisymmetric wave propagation code calculations in layered linear and nonlinear (incrementally elastic-plastic) media were performed to determine the effects of introducing nonlinearity, selected material property variations, and the relative importance of airblast and direct induced effects from surface explosions in the overpressure decade of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most severe problems in laboratory or field studies of ground shock in soils is the measurement of earth pressures, since measured results are often erratic. These erratic results may result from the way the gage is placed in the soil rather than from the gage itself. This study is an investigation of the effect of several arbitrarily chosen placement methods on the static response of SE (steel-epoxy) soil stress gages in dense sand and stiff clay. It illustrates that the way the gage is placed has a significant influence on both the overregistration ratio and the scatter of the data about the mean. Results of this study indicate that, for placement methods similar to those used, measurement of stress magnitude with a single gage is a practical impossibility and that, if accuracy within plus or minus 20 percent of the true stress is desired, the average of at least three measurements (corrected for over- and underregistration) should be used. A further result of this study is a proposed calibration method to determine statistically the overregistration ratio and confidence interval on the mean for a given gage in a given soil using a particular placement procedure in order that these parameters may be used to predict the over- or underregistration of the buried gage in a virgin loaded test specimen. Although not directly applicable to the main objective of this study, information was also obtained on the effect of placement method on response during repetitive loading. The data, presented in an appendix, indicate that overregistration ratio and confidence interval for sand tests decrease with repetitive loading. (Author).

Book excerpt: Froude modeling, where strength and modulus properties and surface overpressure scale as the length scale, is a potential method for determining the structural response of underground protective structures at overpressures in excess of existing laboratory devices provided the strength and modulus properties can be adequately scaled. The results of this study indicated that Froude model tests on silo-type structures in dry sand under one-dimensional plane wave loading could predict the loading response of a prototype constructed using a length scale of three. The primary contribution of this study was to focus attention on the necessity of scaling the unloading soil moduli if Froude modeling is to successfully predict the time-history of a soil-structure system whenever the characteristics of the problem (loading, geometry, etc.) are such that unloading occurs in the soil.
