Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sidelights on Christian Doctrine The Studies in this Volume are based upon Addresses on Christian Doctrine given at various Conferences and Bible Schools in America. This may explain the semi-popular character of the exposition, and some peculiarities in the style, which it has not been thought necessary to remove. Perhaps the less formal nature of the Studies will adapt them better to the needs of those whom technical works on theology might repel. The treatment makes no pretence at exhaustiveness, but probably it will be found that few points of real importance in theological study are left untouched. The work may therefore serve as an introduction to more elaborate handbooks on the Christian doctrines. It may serve to show what, in substance, theology is, to create an interest in its questions, and to remove some misconceptions as to its nature, necessity, and scope. In some degree, it may even be a contribution to the right apprehension of the Christian truth itself. These are days in which theology is at a discount. The cry is loud for "reconstruction" of Christian doctrines; for re-statement in terms of living thought. This book has little to offer in the way of novelties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God The work that was entrusted to me by the General Editors of the International Theological Library was simply the presentation of the conception of God that is characteristic of the Christian religion. I was not sent to search for God, but rather to report as well as I might what the Christian faith testifies concerning him. It has seemed to me that this single commission was enough for me to undertake, and I have attempted nothing more. No report of the literature of the subject will be found upon these pages, nor any quotation of other men's work, nor any controversy. It is the sole endeavour of the book to set forth the Christian doctrine of God for the present day: not the doctrine of the past, or of the future, but the thought of God that we may now entertain if we follow the leading of Jesus Christ the revealer. So far as I have the power, I have sought to be faithful both to the ancient light to the modern, and I have hoped that my presentation might bear reasonably well the tests of the present time. There are many ways of dealing with the vast and glorious theme, and certainly there must be room for a book that simply aims to show forth doctrine as Christian faith may receive it now. I have written in the full conviction that the light which Jesus Christ gives us upon God is the true light, and that God is such a Being as he inspires us to love and trust. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Christian Doctrine Y revered instructor in Christian Theology, Alvah Hovey, D. D., LL. D., generously granted _me permission to use his Manual of Christian Theology in the construction of this handbook. His order and outline have been fol lowed, with such changes as the intent oi this vol ume seemed to require. The purpose of my work is to present the ele ments of Christian Doctrine in a form adapted to the classroom, and to the use of students who are be ginners in the synthetic studies of biblical truth or are seeking for substance of doctrine that may be believed. A. H. Strong, D. D., LL. D., president of Rochester Theological Seminary, has kindly given me liberty to quote freely from his latest the sev enth, edition of Systematic Theology. Much help has been derived from the work of Prof. Sam uel Harris, D. D., LL. D., entitled God the Creator and Lord of All, and from representatives of vari ous schools of thought. But the limits of this book do not allow an extended list of authors consulted, and to whom indebtedness is acknowledged. It behooves intelligent laymen as well as the clergy to seek a clear comprehension of those things which ought surely to be believed concerning the religion of Jesus Christ; and to all such this book is earnestly commended. While attempting to go with fair thoroughness into the various questions raised, it does not profess to deal with them exhaustively, as a book written for the learned would. It assumes little in the reader besides an average English education and a devout mind. Recondite theological language is avoided. Terms are explained as they occur. It is hoped, therefore, that'the book may prove useful, not only to Teachers of the Divine Mysteries at the beginning of their studies, but to many private Chris tians also, who wish to have an intelligent grasp of their faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Doctrine: A Series of Discourses But I had never attempted to deliver a series of discourses expounding, in an orderly and systematic manner, all the principal doctrines of the Christian Faith. In the sermons which are collected in this volume I have, at last, made the attempt. They have been delivered during the last twelve months. When I had written them, I found that several of them were so long that they would impose an undue strain on the attention of the congregation, and I therefore, in one or two cases, gave a brief summary of an extended argument, and, in other cases, omitted a whole section. But so far from finding that a congregation will not 'stand doctrinal sermons, my experience is that such sermons, if of moderate length, are of great interest to large numbers of Christian people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Christian Doctrine of the Teaching of the Holy Spirit, as Held by the Society of Friends It was in reference to this great practical work that they urged so earnestly the doctrine of spiritual influence. They appealed to men, whether they did not know the convictions for sin in their own hearts, and besought them to attend to them as the monitions of the Holy Spirit calling them unto Christ, that they might become partakers of the covenant of his grace, and know through Him true union and peace with God. They esteemed it no derogation to the character of Holy Scripture, but that it was in the strictest accordance with its scope and letter, to maintain that some measure of the light of the Spirit of God has been immediately granted to man ever since his fall, for the purpose of his restoration, and as the spring and principle of all true knowledge and holiness; and that a larger measure of this grace - a fuller communication between God and his people, was the peculiar feature and privilege of the christian covenant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Christian Doctrine of Original Sin Defended, Evidences of It's Truth Produced, and Arguments to the Contrary Answered As the Rev. Author of the following Piece has been removed by Death, before its coming into public View, Custom has made it decent to introduce it with a prefatory Page. The Copy he brought to the Press sometime the last Year, and a Number of Sheets passed his own Review. But a Variety of Incidents retarded finishing the Work till now. - It is hoped, no material Mistakes of the Printer have escaped Correction, besides what are noticed in the Table of Errata. They that were acquainted with the Author, or know his just Character, & have any Taste for the serious Theme, will want Nothing to be said in Recommendation of the ensuing Tract, but only that Mr. Edwards wrote it. Several valuable Pieces on this Subject, have lately been published, upon the fame Side of the Question. But he had no Notice of so much as the very first of them, till he had wholly concluded what he had in View: nor has it been thought, any Thing already printed mould supersede this Work of his; being designed on a more extensive Plan; comprising a Variety of Arguments, and Answers to many Objections, that fell not in the Way of the other worthy Writers; and the Whole done with a Care of familiar Method and Language as well as clear Reasoning, in general accommodated very much to common Capacities. It must be a sensible Pleasure to every Friend of Truth, that so masterly a Hand undertook a Reply to Dr. Taylor; notwithstanding the various Answers already given him, both at home and abroad. God can make His Word prevail in the world without theology. But at a time when human thought is so often confused and perverted by fantastic ideas and theories, spun out of men's own minds, it is evident that it is almost impossible to preserve the Divine Word with out the most passionate intellectual effort to te-think its mean ing and its content. The simple Christian may, it is true, under stand and preserve God's Word without theology; but for those Christians who are involved in the thinking of their own day, and who, as children of their own day, are deeply influenced by these currents of thought, an all-inclusive and thorough effort to re-think what has been given' 'to faith ls absolutely indis pensable. This is particularly true for those whose calling it is to proclaim this faith to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
