Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A time dependent, axisymmetric code is employed to examine the development of sidebands in a free electron laser. For the case where the input signal undergoes an extended period of exponential growth, a broad spectrum of sidebands with growth rates comparable to that of the signal is excited. In general, in an untapered system the optical field displays considerable modulation after several synchrotron periods. An analytical mode, in qualitative agreement with a number of features of the simulations, is discussed. In a tapered system the amplitude of the sidebands approaches a quasi-steady level that is several orders of magnitude below that of the untapered case, and the output optical field displays only a slight modulation. The optimal rate of tapering employed, to maximize efficiency, leads to substantial reduction in the growth rate of sidebands. This result is discussed in connection with the nonadiabatic nature of particle motion in the tapered system. Keywords: Free electron laser; Sideband frequencies; Tapered wiggler; Nonadiabatic electron orbits.

Book excerpt: The one-dimensional, fast-time averaged Hamiltonian is derived in a free electron laser (FEL) for electrons passing through a constant parameter wiggler and a radiation field. The exact unperturbed orbits without sidebands are obtained for all particles and arbitrary separatrix height delta sub gamma. Integration, in action-angle variables, of the linearized kinetic equation with perturbing sidebands over the unperturbed orbits yields the sideband growth rate including both trapped and untrapped particles. The structure and scaling of the unstable spectrum are different from previous results obtained for electrons localized at the bottom of the ponderomotive well. Upper and lower sidebands that are symmetric relative to the FEL frequency have opposite growth rates. There is no differentiation in the magnitude of the gain between upper and lower sidebands. The stability is determined by the sign of df sub 0/d omega sub b, the relative population of quantized oscillators with energy quantum h-bar, omega sub b where omega sub b is the synchrotron frequency in resonance with the sideband. The shear d omega sub b/dJ, where J is the action variable, is stabilizing and distributions wth gradients of df sub 0/dJ localized near the separatrix have the minimum growth rates.

Book excerpt: The one-dimensional fast time averaged Hamiltonian is derived in a free electron laser (FEL) for electrons passing through a constant wiggler and a radiation field. The exact unperturbed orbits without sidebands are obtained for all particles and arbitrary separatrix width delta sub gamma. Integration in action-angle variables of the linearized Vlasov equation with perturbing sidebands over the unperturbed orbits yields the sideband gain for both trapped and untrapped particles. The unperturbed distribution f sub 0 is in an adiabatic equilibrium with the main signal field. It is found that upper and lower sidebands that are symmetric relative to the FEL frequency have opposite growth rates. There is no differentiation in the magnitude of the gain between upper and lower sidebands. The stability is determined by the sign of df sub 0/d omega sub b, i.e., the relative population of oscillation quanta h-bar omega sub b, omega sub b = bounce frequency around resonance. The shear d omega sub b/dJ, where J is the action variable, is stabilizing and distributions with gradients df sub 0/dJ localized near the separatrix have the minimum growth rates. The structures and scaling of the unstable spectrum are different from previous results obtained for electrons localized at the bottom of the ponderomotive well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electron dynamics in a Free Electron Laser (FEL) is studied in the case when the radiation field contains many modes. This situation arises when unstable modes (sidebands) are excited during operation. It is observed that when the strength of these sidebands exceeds certain levels, The electron motion becomes chaotic. This may lead to extensive particle detrapping and loss of amplification for the FEL signal. The threshold for the onset of stochastic electron motion is computed. The evolution of the trapped electron distribution exhibits a diffusive behavior. The rate of particle detrapping is parameterized by the diffusion coefficient D in action space. It is found that the diffusion rates are connected to the type of the sideband spectrum. The diffusion coefficient is always proportional to the ration of the sideband power in all frequencies to the power of the carrier signal. The coefficient of the proportionality however scales diffrequencies to the FEL parameters for each of the three spectral categories: a narrow, a broad discrete and a broad continuous spectrum. The diffusion coefficient is computed analytically for the last two cases and is in good agreement with numerical results. The narrow spectrum yields the highest and the broad continuous the measured in wiggler periods, is independent of the electron energy. (rh).

Book excerpt: Measurements of the multishot-averaged, soft x-ray, self-seeding spectrum at the LCLS free-electron laser often have a pedestal-like distribution around the seeded wavelength, which limits the spectral purity and can negatively affect some user applications not employing a post-undulator monochromator. In this paper, we study the origins of such pedestals, focusing on longitudinal phase space modulations produced by the microbunching instability upstream of the free-electron laser (FEL) undulator. Furthermore, we show from theory and numerical simulation that both energy and density modulations can induce sidebands in a high-gain, seeded FEL whose fractional strength typically grows as the square of the undulator length. The results place a tight constraint on the longitudinal phase space uniformity of the electron beam for a seeded FEL, possibly requiring the amplitude of long-wavelength modulations to be much smaller than the typical incoherent energy spread if the output sideband power is to remain only a couple percent or less of the amplified seed power.

Book excerpt: We consider the sideband instabilities that can occur in free electron lasers which operate in the regime where the bulk of the energetic electron beam is trapped in the ponderomotive potential generated by the beating of the electromagnetic pulse with the static wiggler field. The general dynamical equations which govern the evolution of the system in the presence of sideband modes are derived for modes propagating along the axis of symmetry. All space-charge effects are included in a self-consistent manner, and the gains for both the primary signal and the upper and lower sidebands are computed. We find the lower sideband to be excited, and discuss the consequences for operation of both free electron laser amplifiers and oscillators. The effect of the space-charge waves on the gain depends upon the number of bounces undergone by the trapped electrons in the length of the system, and can act either to enhance or reduce the gain of the sideband. Book excerpt: Two versions of the ''Phase-Step Mirror'' (PSM), a novel optical component that prevents the formation of sidebands in a Free-Electron Laser (FEL) were tested on the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) APEX FEL. Sideband suppression and frequency control with high extraction efficiency and single line, transform limited operation were demonstrated. The results of our LANL experiments and computer simulations showed that for very high gain applications, the first-order sideband is completely suppressed, but the laser gain is so strong that on about pass 300 the sideband at the second-order or next free spectral range of the PSM appears. This second-order sideband may be suppressed by designing a PSM with grooves having two alternating depths, one chosen to suppress the first-order sideband, and the other, the second-order sideband.

For an untapered undulator, we predict the wavelengths of local peaks arising from the sidebands; they are compared with numerical simulations. In our analytical theory, three laser-driving terms are derived. One term does not chirp in frequency, drives a number of frequencies simultaneously, and is always the strongest term with a fixed strength. The other two driving terms, which also drive multiple frequencies, chirp to both directions from a resonant frequency. We assume that the sidebands originate from a dipole oscillation of average electron energy. This oscillation frequency is equal to the synchrotron oscillation frequency. The theory predicts that the strength of the chirping terms is proportional to the amplitude of the dipole moment.

Book excerpt: The 22nd International Free Electron Laser Conference and 7th FEL User Workshop were held August 13-18, 2000 at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The conference and the workshop were hosted by Duke University's Free Electron laser (FEL) Laboratory. Following tradition, the FEL prize award was announced at the banquet. The year 2000 FEL prize was awarded to three scientists propelling the limits of high power FELs: Steven Benson, Eisuke Minehara and George Neill. The conference program was comprised of traditional oral sessions on First Lasing, FEL theory, storage ring FELs, linac and high power FELs, long wavelength FELs, SASE FELs, accelerator and FEL physics and technology, and new developments and proposals. Two sessions on accelerator and FEL physics and technology reflected the emphasis on the high quality of accelerators and components for modern FELs. The breadth of the applications was presented in the workshop oral sessions on materials processing, biomedical and surgical applications, physics and chemistry as well as on instrumentation and methods for FEL applications. A special oral session was dedicated to FEL center status reports for users to learn more about the opportunities with FELs. As usual, the oral sessions were supplemented by poster sessions with in-depth discussions and communications. The FEL physicists and FEL users had excellent opportunities to interact throughout the duration of the event, culminating a Joint Sessions. The year 2000 was very successful being marked by lasing with two SASE and one storage ring short-wavelength FELs, and by the first human surgery with the use of FEL, to mention but a few. The International Program Committee and chairs of the sessions had the challenging and exciting problem of selecting invived and contributed talks for the conferences and the workshop from the influx of abstracts mentioning new results and ideas. The success of the conference was determined by these contributions. Scientists from 15 countries gave 70 talks, presented 176 posters and submitted 146 papers, which are published in the present volume of proceedings.

Book excerpt: This book is a reference text for all those working in free-electron laser research as well as being a learning aid for physicists and graduate students who wish an introduction to this field. Only a basic understanding of relativistic mechanics and electromagnetism is presupposed. After an overview of early developments and general principles of operation, the different models that can be used to describe free-electron lasers are presented, organized according to their range of applicability. The relevent conceptual and mathematical constructs are built up from first principles with attention to obtaining the practically important results in a simple but rigorous way. Interaction of the undulator with the driving electron accelerator and the laser cavity and design of undulator magnets are treated and an overview is given of some typical experiments.
