Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Single crystalline cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) is one of the promising materials that can be used for high-power, high-frequency, and high-temperature devices. Thus, preparation of high quality single crystalline cubic silicon carbide and reproducible fabricated electronic devices based on 3C-SiC will have important technological impacts. In this thesis, we have developed a method for the fabrication of heterojunction Schottky diode gas sensors based on porous silicon and silicon carbide. Due to the large surface area of the porous layer, the adsorb gas species modify the I-V behavior of the Schottky diode or the silicon/silicon carbide heterojunction. It was found that the I-V behavior of the Schottky diodes strongly depends on the type of gases used. It was shown that a shift in the breakdown voltage ranging from I0V to 40V could be obtained depending on the structure of the gas sensor and the types of gas used. The porous silicon was made by anodization of p-type silicon using a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and ethanol. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was used to grow silicon carbide. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) were used to verify the existence and stoichiometry of SiC in the prepared samples. X-Ray Diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to verify the crystalline structure of resulting SiC. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) tests were used to view the surface morphology of resulting samples.

Book excerpt: Gas sensor products are very often the key to innovations in the fields of comfort, security, health, environment, and energy savings. This compendium focuses on what the research community labels as solid state gas sensors, where a gas directly changes the electrical properties of a solid, serving as the primary signal for the transducer. It starts with a visionary approach to how life in future buildings can benefit from the power of gas sensors. The requirements for various applications, such as for example the automotive industry, are then discussed in several chapters. Further contributions highlight current trends in new sensing principles, such as the use of nanomaterials and how to use new sensing principles for innovative applications in e.g. meteorology. So as to bring together the views of all the different groups needed to produce new gas sensing applications, renowned industrial and academic representatives report on their experiences and expectations in research, applications and industrialisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sensor based on the wide bandgap semiconductor, silicon carbide (SiC), has been developed for the detection of combustion products in power plant environments. The sensor is a catalytic gate field effect device that can detect hydrogen containing species in chemically reactive, high temperature environments. Robust metallization and electrical contacting techniques have been developed for device operation at elevated temperatures. To characterize the time response of the sensor responses in the millisecond range, a conceptually new apparatus has been built. Software has been developed to cope with the requirements of fast sensor control and data recording. In addition user friendly software has been developed to facilitate use of the SiC sensors for industrial process control applications.

Book excerpt: The second edition of this book focuses on the synthesis, design, and application of semiconducting metal oxides as gas sensing materials, including the gas sensing mechanism, and modification methods for sensing materials, while also providing a comprehensive introduction to semiconductor gas sensing devices. As an essential part of IoT (Internet of things), gas sensors have shown great significance and promising prospects. Therefore, studies on functional mesoporous metal oxides, one of the most important gas sensing materials based on their unique Knudsen diffusion behavior and tailored pore structure, have increasingly attracted attention from various disciplines. The book offers a valuable reference guide to metal oxide gas sensing materials for undergraduate and graduate students alike. It will also benefit all researchers who are involved in synthesis and gas sensing of metal oxides nanomaterials with relevant frontier theories and concepts. Engineers working on research and development of semiconductor gas sensors will also find some new ideas for sensor design.
