Book excerpt: A wonderfully enjoyable storehouse of ancient Chinese history and legends, which also has an important role in understanding 21st-century China 'And remember: Heaven's blessing will cease forever if there's despair and poverty in your lands' The Most Venerable Book (also known as The Book of History) is one of the Five Classics, a key work of Chinese literature which preserves some of the most ancient and dramatic chronicles of the history, both real and mythological, of the Chinese state. For many centuries it was a central work for anyone wishing to work for the Imperial administration, preserving as it does a fascinating mixture of key Confucian concepts as well as page after page of heroes, benevolent rulers, sagacious ministers, and struggles against flood, corruption and vicious, despotic rulers. The First Emperor tried in 213 BC to have all copies of the book destroyed because of its subversive implication that 'the Mandate of Heaven' could be withdrawn from rulers who failed their people. For similar reasons it was also banned by Chairman Mao. Extraordinarily, the values of The Most Venerable Book have been revived by the Chinese government of the 2010s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An unforgettable look at the peculiar horrors and humiliations involved in solitary confinement” from the prisoners who have survived it (New York Review of Books). On any given day, the United States holds more than eighty-thousand people in solitary confinement, a punishment that—beyond fifteen days—has been denounced as a form of cruel and degrading treatment by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. Now, in a book that will add a startling new dimension to the debates around human rights and prison reform, former and current prisoners describe the devastating effects of isolation on their minds and bodies, the solidarity expressed between individuals who live side by side for years without ever meeting one another face to face, the ever-present specters of madness and suicide, and the struggle to maintain hope and humanity. As Chelsea Manning wrote from her own solitary confinement cell, “The personal accounts by prisoners are some of the most disturbing that I have ever read.” These firsthand accounts are supplemented by the writing of noted experts, exploring the psychological, legal, ethical, and political dimensions of solitary confinement. “Do we really think it makes sense to lock so many people alone in tiny cells for twenty-three hours a day, for months, sometimes for years at a time? That is not going to make us safer. That’s not going to make us stronger.” —President Barack Obama “Elegant but harrowing.” —San Francisco Chronicle “A potent cry of anguish from men and women buried way down in the hole.” —Kirkus Reviews

She tells her sister her secret plan, and then sets out on her adventure, determined not to tell anyone else. Surrounded by nature's rhythmic symphony, she grows frustrated by the animals she meets along the way because they refuse to let her pick their daisies. When she approaches the smart-alecky goat who guards the most beautiful daisies of all, she attempts to outsmart him with a gift of kindness. Readers of this picture book for children will share in Shu Shu's delight as she discovers how wonderful it feels to do something nice for someone--even when doing so is more difficult than she ever imagined. The repetition of sounds and comical animal characters add flavor to this simple, yet thoughtful, story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is primarily intended for looking up Zi Wei Dou Shu terms by users who do not know about ZWDS and beginners rather than a ZWDS chart reading guide book. However, if you have a grasp of the book, you will naturally know how to read a ZWDS chart. It is because the book helps you understand each brick and general structure of a house. Once you have a solid understanding, you can naturally build the house. All learning subjects have static and dynamic aspects. The static part is temporarily acquired by the learner, usually consisting of prerequisites and conceptual definitions. The static part is inherited from previous scholars and classic texts. The dynamic part is the result of the user's experience and the consolidation of knowledge. There are exceptional users who have the ability to revisit and upgrade the static part, such as Albert Einstein. But for most of us, when we first learn, we have to absorb the classical knowledge first and then apply and transform it later. Within the framework of this book, the terms are only explained in the most basic way to give you an idea and visualization, rather than providing complete and perfect explanations.

It raises issues regarding the applicability of paradigms of Western auteurism and feminist authorship in studying Tang's work and also examines the reasons why Tang Shu Shuen's work has been so underrecognised and underdiscussed historically. Through examining the production and reception structures of Tang Shu Shuen's work, this publication attempts to shed light on the development of Hong Kong's film industry and the evolution and problems of Hong Kong's cultural identity in the 1960s and 1970s. She teaches courses in areas including media production, cinema studies and cultural studies. She is also a filmmaker, media artist and writer.
