Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shropshire Parish Registers, Vol. 13: Lichfield Diocese The present is the thirteenth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Lichfield which has been completed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society. It consists of the Registers of Edgmond, Tibberton, Waters Upton, Great Bolas, and Eaton Constantine. In this volume, as has been the plan adopted by the Council throughout, the Registers are not printed verbatim et literatim, but in abstract form, all mere verbiage being omitted, though every fact is recorded, and all occurrences, remarkable events, terriers, &c., given in the Registers are printed in full. A capital letter after "of" or "p." denotes the parish whose particular Register is being printed; thus "of E." = "of Edgmond," and "p. T." = "parish of Tibberton." Thanks are due to the Revs. Prebendary Talbot, F. J. Salt, S. Hobson, J. Miller, and R. Jowett Burton, for leave to print the Registers, and for facilities afforded in their transcription and collation. Also to Mr. T. R. Horton for transcribing, and to Miss Auden, and the Revs. R. Covers 1555 to 1653. Written on thin paper sewn into an illuminated black letter parchment of many folds. Examination of these folds revealed both a Bap. And a Bur. Of 1658. The whole has recently been put, just as it was, into a strong calf binding. The writing, though difficult to read, is for the most part clear and spaced out, but in the last few pages the entries are far too crowded. This Register measures 17 inches by 7 inches, or without the new binding 16 inches by 6 inches. A gap occurs from March 5th, 1567, to July 2nd, 1570, lost pages probably. This Vol. Contains Bap., Mar., and Bur. Marriage by Licence is first mentioned 1639. After a gap of 7 years, Vol. II. Begins at 1660, and comes down to 1725. It is 13 inches by 6 inches. It is fairly well bound, and the whole, with the old cover, has been strongly te-bound, also in calf. The writing is on parchment and very distinct, and easy to read. From 1684 and ever after, the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials are classified. The Rev. Wm. Scott made this valuable improvement. He continues this Register so long as God in his mercy shall think fit. Our most interesting entry is in this volume, the burial of the only Duke of Shrewsbury Feb. 23rd, 1717, was buried, Charles, Duke of Shrewsbury. This has been done, with the kind assistance of a number of his friends in Wem, who raised the sum of fifty pounds in aid of the cost of printing. The thanks of the Society are due to them, and also to the incumbents who have given facilities for their Registers to be copied or collated. The Register of Wem, as it passed through the press, was mainly collated by the Rev. W. G. D. Fletcher, but Miss Auden collated volume V., and Miss hope-edwardes volume VI. The Register of Edstaston was transcribed and collated by the Rev. F. T. Purcell, and that of Newtown was transcribed by Mr. T. R. Horton, and collated by the Rev. Henry Phillips Lee. To all these thanks are also due. For the biographical sketch of Mr. Vane which follows we are indebted to the Rev. Prebendary Auden, m.a., Vicar of Condover. The accompanying illustration, which forms the frontispiece, is the work of Carl Hentschel, after a photograph by Maull and Fox. The Registers are not printed verbatim at literatim, but in the abstract form used in all the Registers, and the abbreviations are readily apparent to the general reader. It is necessary to add here, that, on consulting pages I to 96, it is necessary to refer to the voluminous addenda ET corrigenda which follow the Introduction to the Wem Register.
